I wonder if that Fred Hampton movie will be as tonally hosed as the Chicago 7 one

Edit: Looking at who's involved, probably not. Phew.

Would you mind expanding on the tone of the Chicago 7?

There was very much a vibe to me that Sorkin tried to argue that the prosecutor in the case was a good guy, just misunderstood. Its Sorkin's typical neoliberal call for unity which is normally annoying af, and wildly inappropriate for telling the story of righteous left-wing militant radicals railroaded by a lovely, self serving system designed to avoid any significant changes for the downtrodden and disenfranchised.

So you can understand why I'd have concerns. That said, its a Ryan Coogler film so I'm no longer worried. Also I think Lebron James' production co. is involved? He seems pretty vocal about black rights.

Yea maybe it was because of how careful and methodical Arnold was with his career choices, but a very high percentage of those movies still hold up extremely well today. At least for a decade, from 1982 when he did Conan to 1991 when he did Terminator 2, I'd be perfectly happy to sit down and watch any of those films. There isn't a stinker in the whole bunch(Red Heat is debatable).

Then of course starting in 1993 he became a bit more inconsistent but he was still batting around .500 with stuff like True Lies, Eraser, and Jingle All the Way so overall he made far less bad movies than the typical action star or A-list star of any genre.

I wonder how many of those he took on because of that Crusades project he was attached to falling apart

It's interesting because the most obvious scheduling conflict there would've been T2, because the Crusades project fell apart in 1990 and that's around the time T2 was shooting. I can only assume that if Arnold was unavailable T2 still would've happened, just a year later.

Kindergarten Cop was filmed in 1990 so maybe Arnold wouldn't have had the time for it if the Crusades project was happening.

I thought they were still talking about making it in the mid 90's

Watched Judas and the Black Messiah last night. It was alright, but it felt structurally and stylistically like a standard Oscar-friendly biopic, just about content that is actually cool and interesting. I liked the performances as performances but agree with the general consensus that the actors were way too old for their parts, undermining the emotional impact. Appreciate its unflinching approach to the radical politics and respect for the Panthers, but it struck me as almost too standardized.

However, the excellent documentary, The Murder of Fred Hampton, is online for free in HD on Vimeo.

Yeah. And like Kaluuya gives a very good performance as this character of the Black Messiah, but I don’t quite feel like he’s playing Fred Hampton. He’s playing some other character.

If you can do it without spoilers, what would help him get there? Is it just that he's too old?

Just saw this, had sympathy pains for Alex Winter

quote:

Test audiences were said to have reacted negatively to the first showings of the completed film. According to Alex Winter on the DVD commentary, many of the younger teen-types that made up a majority of the preview-crowd were expecting this to be the next "Bill and Ted" movie, and often were vocal to what they were seeing on-screen. During a line of dialogue from Brooke Shields in the opening scene, a young male test audience member rose from his seat to yell, "Fuuuuuuck Yoouuu, Biiiiitch!!", much to the dismay of the filmmakers present.

Rob is one of those guys who has interesting ideas (I.E. true crime Podcasters being obsessed with Michael Myers, or some of the characters from the Trio From Hell movies), but is not especially good at realizing them. He'd be better off in a writing room where his interesting ideas can be realized by better directors and his bad ideas can be discarded.

You can really feel in House if 1,000 Corpses how excited Zombie is to finally be making his horror movie, but the result is that he throws everything he ever wanted to see into one movie without a developed sense for balance and it becomes a total mess. Stuff like holding the execution gun shot for a full minute before firing or all the music video like visual effects are good in theory but aren’t deployed well. It’s the stuff you normally work out in student films but he went right to the big leagues so it’s all on display here.

That opening however is amazing and obviously he grew as a filmmaker and managed to find that sense of rhythm that makes his experimentalism work. But House is a rough movie overall.

Yeah. He's not without creative merit, but I think he's kinda disorganized. He's the kind of guy that could use a creative partner to rein in his sillier ideas, otherwise he's basically just Spookier Kevin Smith.

Regarding Jackass, I feel like if you're gonna point at someone whose been ruined by the franchise, you don't point at Knoxville, who may be physically wrecked but still seems like the same likable guy he's always been.

You look at Bam Margera. Who is so hosed up he literally got pulled off the 4th film because 1) He refused their rule about on set sobriety to be in solidarity with Steve-O who is trying to stay clean, and 2) Literally thinks Jeff Tremaine is a wizard who is trying to ruin his life, resulting in a restraining order. He also threatened Tremaine's wife and kids. All because he claims Tremaine owes him money. Which might be true, but maybe not worth going nuclear option over.

I mean you could also look at Steve-O, although he seems to be doing okay for now. But by his own account he was not okay.
