Of course the name thing is true, until this week it was literally the only interesting thing about him.

it's actually even better, in that his grandfather was an independently wealthy tycoon of some type who thought the unintended pun was so funny when he first heard of arm & Hammer that he bought the company outright.

eizouken is actually really fuckin good and would probably be uniquely appealing to a lot of the people in here, its about high school students trying to start their own animation studio out of a bombed out shack on their school's property with basically no budget, and learning how to reconcile the childlike joy you take in cool stuff with the sometimes deeply frustrating and stressful experience of creating cool poo poo yourself. only 12 eps and a breezy watch at that.

I’m pretty sure I remember hearing that the thunderball theme was written in, like, an afternoon of panicked work because somebody hosed up at some point and didn’t actually hire anyone to do a theme until extremely late, so the completely nonsensical lyrics make sense from a “gently caress it, as long as it rhymes and fits the meter” sense

Anyone know any good docs about the toy industry of the 80’s? The asinine proliferation of stuff like He-Man, the government regulations surrounding children’s’ TV, the satanic panic, the importation and westernization of Japanese properties, subjects like that?

Toys That Made Us is a doc series on netflix that covers some of this, though it does veer into rose tinted nostalgia. The He-Man episode in particular is quite illuminating, though.

My Lexi Alexander story is that we were actually mutuals for like a year and were able to have entirely reasonable Twitter conversations for that entire time on a variety of subjects until I lightly pushed back on a “socialism is for white bros and PoC should reject it in fact of building something new” take and she immediately blocked me before having like a 2 day meltdown over people bringing up thomas sankara in her mentions

Picked up the godzilla showa collection from the criterion flash sale and I definitely did not remember Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla ending with the main villain getting shot in the throat and blasting the camera with arterial spray as he goes down. Metal!

No, because Amazon would use the increased business as an excuse to replace the striking workers with scabs. By not buying anything you’re showing that you respect the workers more than the corporation and that you’re willing to weather some temporary inconvenience to both cause a hit to their income and support the wishes of the striking workers.

What exactly are you people buying from Amazon that you couldn’t get elsewhere?

For real, Amazon is so loving rife with counterfeiters and dodgy pricing that finding what you actually want or need is a huge pain in the rear end, its easier these days to just find smaller online stores with less loving chaff to wade through.

Iirc Army isn’t set in a post apocalypse, there are zombies but the outbreak is contained to Nevada at the start of the movie and the scheme is to get rich by stealing all the money that was left in the casinos during the evacuation, before the government nukes Vegas to the ground to cleanse the infection.

Talking about dwayne and his Brand reminds me, I was bored as poo poo a few months ago and was doing speculative casting in my head for if someone did a My Hero Academia film series and it occurred to me that Dwayne had the perfect energy to play Endeavor, but he’d never agree to it because it wouldn’t jive with his image.

What are y'all's favorite instances of the title of the movie being used in dialogue?

“Watching Norris in there gave me the idea that every little part of him was a whole. Every little piece was an individual animal with a built-in desire to protect its own life. You see, when a man bleeds, it's just tissue. But blood from one of you Bram Stoker’s Draculas won't obey when it's attacked.”

There's a weird thing where a streaming service'll claim something as a Netflix or Prime or whatever original if they have the distribution licence for it in a particular market. They can call any ol' poo poo an "original"

Like for example in Australia "the Expanse" is an Amazon Prime original series and has the Amazon logo at the start and everything, despite it being made by Syfy and Syfy even being a purchasable cable channel here

this is actually because syfy cancelled The Expanse after the third season and amazon picked it up for 4, 5, and the final upcoming season 6.

There’s a great rant Lexi Alexander had on Twitter once about how a lot of directors would have massive budgets for set dressing and mise en scene, but you only ever got to see it during a 3 seconds establishing shot because every other take was a medium tight with heavy DoF blur.

I don’t know if the Russos are deep into huffing their own farts or deeply insecure about how - in light of revelations about Marvels FX pipeline and how that relates to IW/Endgame - their claim to having actually directed the films they’re most famous for is kinda materially shaky, but either option is loving hilarious.

Tig imo is one of the highlights of the movie, she takes a character that would have probably been skin crawlingly scummy as played by d’elia (even before the sex pest revelations) and turns them into a lovable, sardonic dirtbag.
