I can't remember who said it or whether it was even in this particular thread, but someone said they're having trouble finding the "energy" to watch movies and I'm feeling this same way recently. Watching movies at home has always been rough because it's difficult to get immersed in an environment with so much easy distraction, but now it feels even more difficult. I have almost all the major streaming services and it still feels hard to find something new to commit to watching

Though the other side of that coin a good friend of mine is away left wing art school guy who got a fancy high paying job doing graphic design for an ad firm. So basically he "sold out". But the hours were very long and his entire life was just that job. It drained him completely and he just hated his life. He ended up taking a different job with a severe pay cut but now he has time for himself and works on his own personal stuff and it's just been better for him. He's happier now but rapidly running out of money. So I guess either way you sacrifice one thing or the other because capitalism is a poison that destroys lives, fulfillment, and creativity.

All this talk about Pacific Rim reminded me of one of the funniest bits of liberal film discourse; people had to prove Pacific Rim was feminist, but because Mako Mori never talks to another woman in the film it couldn't pass the Bechdel Test, so they made up the Mako Mori test, which says a movie is feminist if a female character gets a complete emotional arc.

I watched Tenet and Shin Godzilla with my friends (who'd already seen them) this weekend.

I'm just going to copy paste my thoughts on Tenet from my Letterboxd review. This poo poo pissed me off and I need to complain about it somewhere.

quote:

Every Nolan movie seems to start with an interesting science fiction idea and the plot is an afterthought which serves to exploit that idea in interesting ways. This is no more apparent than in Tenet. Anything that doesn't directly showcase the idea of inversion is paid no attention or care at all. Thus you have scenes like the one where one character is describing her abuse at the hands of her husband, which ought to be presented with the gravitas one would expect, but the dialogue is delivered and edited as if the film is embarrassed that it had to include it. Nolan wants to show off the cool sci-fi concept and have it be justified in the script, and hurriedly rushes through the emotional core of the movie to do so. (Doesn't help matters that Nolan again refuses to put any effort into mixing the dialogue, so one must strain to hear what is being said.) It sucks all the tension out of the film. I simply do not care about Mr. Protagonist and his friends because the emotional stakes are not treated with importance by the film, and in this kind of film that's all that really matters.

The action is fantastical and delightfully excessive. The emotional beats are rote and underdeveloped. The dialogue is necessarily expository and simple. The audio is horribly unbalanced. It's a Nolan film and you shouldn't expect anything more.

2.5 / 5 stars

And Shin Godzilla frickin ruled.
