Clearly the stories are getting too good in porn to make room for horny in movies. Who needs Peggy Carter getting hot for Steve Rogers when you can experience the deep and complex pathos of a woman who has somehow gotten caught in a washer and/or dryer?

I just rewatched the LotR extended editions for the first time in a decade and it was so obvious wherever an extended scene came on because I was always acutely aware that the scene served no real story purpose. That's not really a bad thing, though—I was watching them to have a bunch of fantasy nonsense on my TV for 9 hours and the chill hangout character scenes were pretty great when you're not watching it as a movie.

I vibed with middle earth pretty hard even though I have a ton of issues with those films, and I wish more sci-fi/fantasy movies took that approach to alternate editions. It'd kill the pacing in any movie, but sometimes it'd be nice to just kick back and chill in a cool world with some characters you enjoy. Give me a 10 minute scene of Deckard eating noodles and arguing with the guy behind the counter.

Weird that when Hollywood tries to reduce its blatant and obvious misogyny, everything just becomes asexual 🤔

It's almost like our society has no idea how to treat women like people!

Crossposting from the Horror thread, but I made a thread about cryptids, conspiracies, the occult, and supernatural creatures and I think you should all come and talk about them with me.

Nowadays you pull up your favorite streaming site, browse through their collection until you find something that sounds like your exact mood, waste 45 minutes with nothing to show for it, and instead go back to watching speedruns on YouTube.

Too real. Though I would also add that you create Letterboxd account and fill it with hyper-specific watchlists of everything you want to watch, curating moods and sub-genres, cross-referencing them with the streaming or rental services they're available on, buying Blu-rays and 4K UHD discs to get the best possible picture quality, then you go back to watching speedruns on YouTube.

I've been waiting for years for someone talk to me about cursed swamps, scary ghosts, and local legends. I think that thread would be the ideal place, yes.

I stumbled upon those the other day while looking for the Tron modern trailer that made the rounds a few years back. It's a delicate art making a modern trailer, since much like a modern poster you have to balance fandom vs. new viewers as a split audience. I think those do a good job balancing the two, both encapsulating the spirit of the films while throwing some fanservice moments in there for the diehards. It would be really easy to just make "Hey remember THIS??" trailers, which is what most examples on YouTube are.

It's not even close. Bless the team for being overly ambitious based on their budget, but the show is like a bunch of college kids making Creepshow fanfilms. It's really endearing and its heart is definitely in the right place, but it's not even close to Tales from the Crypt and a mile away from the film.

I have a theory about ASMR. Everyone is lonely, people don't have IRL friends. You can have online friends, and those can be great relationships, but at a basic biological level it's not really satisfying the need to be with other people. So ASMR is basically a substitute for the aspects of human contact that online relationships don't have. That's why it's all whispers and breathing and mouth sounds. It's the little audio cues that another person is in the room with you.

I think "as a joke" is a wry exaggeration, unless I missed something significant in the story. Wong's rationale was "an artist can never step in the same river twice." Essentially that he wasn't interested in preserving his vision of the time, but instead used the restoration as an opportunity to reflect who he is as an artist now.

I can understand feeling that way, but it's a pretty poo poo way to look at art.

feedmyleg
Dec 25, 2004
I wonder how many times someone at Criterion gently suggested to him that they also include the original version alongside the restored version.
