So I was browsing DriveThruRPG because of course I was and guess what I found.

quote:

Welcome to Golgotha...

Welcome to the future. Golgotha is a game of exploration and danger in mysterious, dead installations at the edges of humanity’s interstellar sphere. The players take on the roles of a crew of Scavengers who seek out, penetrate and rob these ancient lost structures, known collectively as the Golgotha. To those lucky enough to survive the risks, artifacts await – lost technology that the mysterious Overseers who rule the Human Sphere covet. Find something of value and in return the Overseers will boost your body, allowing you to finally seek that revenge you have always dreamed of…

Complete your destiny, or die trying.

An stand-alone OSR game of exploration and discovery using the Black Hack (note: the Black Hack is not required to play this game).

So the premise of raiding ancient abandoned alien worlds is not new. This product was also kickstarted, curiously enough. I may pick it up at some point when I'm running Across a Thousand Dead Worlds though.

One of the journalling games I've heard of consistently is Thousand Year Old Vampire. https://thousandyearoldvampire.com/

I lurk in the solo roleplaying/wargaming subreddits so I've heard of another journalling game where you are either an herbalist or alchemist and have to detail fantastic plants that you find in the wild. Can't remember the name though. Let me do some digging.

I agree with KingKalamari's suggestion of the default setting of Call of Cthulhu; and although I cannot think of any direct translation of The Doom That Came to Gotham into an RPG setting, I can suggest a couple of books you may want to take ideas from.

For a more pulpy slant on Cthulhu you could look at the WW2 heroes vs Nazis and Cthulhu Mythos things game line Achtung! Cthulhu. I'm not sure about this, but I think Achtung! Cthulhu can describe superheroes (or people becoming superheroes) fighting Cthulhu. Then again I may be thinking of Godlike.

If you want a more oppressive atmosphere of horror than Call of Cthulhu, take a look at Cthulhu City, a sort of ubercity where the Old Ones reign and the players are vigilantes; fighting the Mythos, the Law and the corrupt Government. It is a really good campaign setting that I don't think gets enough play. When I think of The Doom That Came to Gotham, the despairing oppression of the comic's atmosphere reminded me of Cthulhu City.

So HELLPIERCERS is a tactical RPG where you play as humans enlightened in their Gnosticism, wearing corpses of angels, and wielding magi-tech weapons as you wage war against Hell itself to free the mortal souls imprisoned there.

It is in kickstarter land with 37 about hours to go as of this post. It has blown past it's initial goal. I backed it. Also Kai Tave is writing mech rules I believe. Waks Saavedra of GUBAT BANWA fame is also involved.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sandypuggames/hellpiercers-tactical-harrowing-action

Importantly there is a 52 page rough but usable preview here: https://sandypuggames.itch.io/hellpiercers-preview-edition

From skimming the preview I got the strong impression that it has elements of being a tactical wargame, which is totally in my wheel-house. I like the rules for placing terrain as it is emphasized that you (the players) are creating a collaborative storytelling space by setting up the tactical board and you shouldn't try to "win" the "place terrain" minigame.

I do have a question though. In the Faction section for the hellish antagonists, there are these very interesting Unique Locations (for example: Mt Ararat, Pelagoios, The Hidden World) and each has a build time value. How do these Unique Locations fit in with the terrain placing minigame? Are the locations built then placed on the tactical gameboard after the GM has reached some threshold for their corresponding demonic faction?

Anyway, HELLPIERCERS looks like a drat cool game.

GURPS Fantasy II, The Mad Lands is a fantastic book I will never get to play because it's so out there. Also the art like the poor Madlander who is vomiting off the side of the boat ("boat painting"), the picture of the Footless and the Headless will never be far from my memory. Glad more people are discovering it's magnificent weirdness.

Regarding Six Ages, the demo for Six Ages II: Lights Going Out has been released! I haven't played it because I'm knee deep in a Six Ages I: Ride Like the Wind play through. Then I got distracted by Age of Wonders 4 and holy poo poo it is so good.

Here are some of my clan reports from streaming Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind. Spoilered because I talk about events in the game.

Report 1: Streaming Six Ages: Ride like the Wind in Room 4. It is a clan management game in a Bronze Age Mythological world where the action revolves around stealing neighbor's cows and solving Choose Your Own Adventure-like events where mundane and magical problems try your people. This [picture not shown] is from an early raid of another clan where we were victorious. They have since raided us in revenge and I need more Swords people, and we are low on food, and lampreys from the sky just ate my Duck Spirit oh god.

Report 2: Six Ages: Ride like the Wind report because we had a good session yesterday. So things have been going south for our clan since we got into a attrition battle with our ancestral enemy the Trolls in the time of Churka 17 (time is recorded as the number of years the clan leader, Churka, has been in "office"). We lost the battle and lost many Swords and Bows that day. Also the Trolls ate one of our circle members.

Since then it has been a struggle. When we once started with upwards of 700 cows we now have around 400 cows. Magic has been drying up where once it was 10 points of Magic produced every Sacred Time, we are down to 7 produced annually, which is quite limiting. We tried performing a ritual of our Sun God with a strapping promising 19 year old with excellent combat...and he got frozen solid and broken into ice pieces by Cold Sun. We are often raided as many as three times a year and I'm having a hard time keeping my number of Swords fighters around 17 because they keep dying. To prevent the clan from starving year after year I've had to sell off two of our clan's treasures, a non renewable resource. No one will form new trading caravans with us. But, dear reader, all is not lost.

A few years back, children were born with the power of Elmal the Sun. They could literally throw fireballs. We treated the three carefully, welcoming them into the tribe and turning the other way when they accidently burned down a tent. When one of them became a man and wanted to leave the tribe because of visions, we threw him a feast. He has returned. He is Renowned in combat which is what we desperately need as we are surrounded on three sides by enemies, all eager for our cows and our blood.

Will the young one become our savior? We'll find out next time...

Report 3: Another Six Ages report! Your favorite Bronze Age clan management game where Myths and Gods are real. So last time, I was struggling with a downward spiral of losing cows left and right, a lack of food, my Swords (elite fighters) dying, and 3 raids a year against me by enemy clans.

Friends, we’ve turned the clan around and I have to thank two parties: the decisions made by the stream crowd, and our 19-year-old clan member Yakatan with Renowned skill in Combat who, according to the in-game events, throws fireballs. Yeah.

As a reminder, I started with around 750 cows, last time I reported in the clan only had 300-400 cows. Now the people have 643 cows and climbing thanks to Yakatan lead herd raids. And that’s not all. In the past year we have had six major raids. We were threatened by the Alkothi, the Demon People. We sent them packing. The Porganosi, a clan of the Ram Peoples (Orlanthi), threatened us. We took them down. Our ancestral enemy the Trolls showed up. Yakatan took two trolls down in hand-to-hand combat to save one of our nobles. While we were recovering from that, the Flame Singers clan teamed up with the Sa-Gorini clan to crush us. Our Raven shaman (Trickster) summoned a Wasp spirit to sting the Sa-Gorini into fleeing the battlefields and then our carefully allocated combat tactics carried the day against the Flame Singers.

Was that it? No. The Andayling clan (Ram people) kidnapped 9 members of our clan. We tracked them down thanks to a divination revealed by the God Elmal (known to some as “the Bad”) and liberated our people. Yakatan the God child is truly amazing.

Report 4: Another Six Ages report! Or Everyone Loves Yatakan. Six Ages is the Bronze Age clan management game where Myths and Gods are real, and boy can they suck sometimes. In the last "episode" we were slowly regaining momentum and wealth (643 cows) thanks to Yatakan, our warleader with Renowned in Combat who was beating raids against us right, left, and center.

Yatakan remains the crown jewel in the streamer clan, but there were a couple of close calls.

We were raided by the Yellowhill tribe. They brought over 100 fighters and we were outnumbered. Yatakan was nervous about this so we dedicated some clan magic to the fight. During the battle, Orala, our healer, saw Yatakan sustain a terrible blow. This made me really concerned because I had never seen Yatakan become injured before. After some discussion, the streamer clan council decided to send an armed escort with Orala to Yatakan's side. Fortunately Orala revived Yatakan. For us this was the most important outcome even though the dastardly Yellowhill tribe won the battle and looted our cows.

Later Yatakan was challenged to a duel by Murus, a lion warrior of the distant Ergeshite nomads. Anyway we took a risk, and Yatakan's might was tested by the lion warrior's magic claws. Yatakan became injured (was away from the clan circle for one season) but he triumphed over Murus, nearly decapitating him.

But all was not ideal. The clan protested that Yatakan was overly litigious and loved lawsuits. One other circle member even wanted our boy thrown off of the council! Essentially we told the grumblers to go pound sand and we changed the laws so there is now a limit to the number of lawsuits any clan member can raise. Also we carried out a Heroquest with Yatakan's childhood friend who could also throw fireballs, Ayvtu. We devoted many points of Magic to Ayvutu and sacrified 30 cows. She was turned into a block of ice and shattered by our enemy Cold Sun in the Godrealm. Another 22 year old has been lost to the Gods.

From the DriveThru description:

The war has been won, the Nameless Emperor defeated, his legions scattered or destroyed, but the cost was almost the ruin of the world.

Play survivors seeking to protect and rebuild in this self-contained pen and paper fantasy roleplaying game by the author of the acclaimed Liminal.

Your characters are capable and heroic, but the dangers out there are great. The land is corrupt, and tainted monsters roam and seek prey. The surviving Ministers of the Nameless Empire gather their forces once more, yet hope still remains.

Can you keep your community safe, help it grow, and rebuild civilisation?

The community is at the centre of play. The players create the community as a group, and their characters go on quests on the community's behalf until the game ends in triumph or tragedy. They are the heroes of their community, and the community needs them in order to survive and grow.

This 256-page PDF contains both the rules and details of the game's world. This world is human, with diverse cultures and inherent magic. Magicians of different cultures have different magical styles, including Light Bringing, Rune Wizardry, and Words of Power.

Art by the design team at Handiwork games, led by the acclaimed RPG artist Jon Hodgson.

Have any of you hear/played it? I'm curious as to how much civilization or community management is involved, or if it's focus is all on community quests.

Found this blog post from a blogger I'm not familiar with, which does some financial analysis of producing an RPG with art and how much you should expect to make from writing (read: good luck with that). Since I've always been curious about producing independent products, I find the arguments raised interesting and I figure some people here may also find them interesting.

Also, linked in the "Appendix" of the blog post was this Grand Campaign Hex Crawl called Wolves Upon the Coast by lukegearing. Of note is that there are around 540 "keyed hexes", which I assume means locations that are detailed. Might be wrong on that. Also the price for the hexcrawl is $50. Anyone heard of this product? I'm curious if it is selling at that price.

Arivia posted:

A keyed hex is a hex on a hex map that has an accompanying key (like a dungeon map + key, but there's often lots of hexes without accompanying key entries, whereas empty rooms that are unkeyed are far less common in dungeons). In Wolves Upon The Coast, that can range from a 20-room dungeon to a monster lair to an interesting feature.

I can't remember exactly where I saw it to link to the graph here, but Luke Gearing has posted a graph of the sales numbers somewhere and was quite happy with them overall. (For an OSR product, I'm sure it'd be outnumbered by an official D&D book or something.)

But why it was probably linked deserves a mention regarding payment: Gearing was upfront about Wolves always costing $50 when complete, but he gave proportional discounts to people who bought in earlier when he had less done. So a good number of people bought in at like $5 or $10, then were able to go "okay, this stuff is good" and promote it to their friends who bought in at higher prices, and now there's a large amount of good word of mouth with the final product at $50.

e: found his blog discussing pricing and sales: https://lukegearing.blot.im/wolves-upon-the-coast-grand-retrospective-2

Something Else posted:

I bought Wolves Upon the Coast at $50. It's a very impressive work of gameable setting creation. I'll probably pay $50 again when the print version comes out.

Thanks for the opinions and link Arivia and Something Else. I spent some time reading the hexcrawl's keyed hexes in the demo provided on the Wolves Upon the Coast main page and I have to say I really like it. The Druids are described as weird mystics occupying this space between beastmen and humans and even the "simplest" hex descriptions have unique details you can apply hooks to.

For example:

quote:

04.07 Beached Whale
Upon the sands, a beached killer whale slowly dies. It snaps at those approaching
like a feral dog. In its stomach, 64 fish in various states of decomposition, a statue
of an angry sea god and a clam with a pearl worth 100sp.

Why is the statue of an angry sea god in it's stomach? Is that causing the killer whale to beach itself? Maybe the beached whale is a polymorphed offender of the angry sea god and cursed by them. Maybe the beached whale is a first striker by the angry sea god against someone that offended them on the land. Perhaps there will be more sea creatures appearing on the shore? Or did some fisherman throw the statue of the angry sea god into the whale's maw to appease the sea god and prevent the whale from destroying catch after catch of fish? There are lots of ways to go with a single odd detail.

I had a good time playing a game recently. So I wrote up an after action report and system critique of it.
The game is CRASH//CART, an indy game where you get to play as Doc Wagon or Trauma Team employees in a cyberpunk world. Our group had a blast with the adventures, but we also compiled some suggestions for players and GMs new to the system. The adventure had blood, bullets and really tense maneuvers with a flying Emergency Medical Vehicle. We won...? Or at least made it to the end of our shifts.

It is a Forged in the Dark game, but uses a curated deck of cards and card draws to resolve the success or failure of actions.

Another police vehicle tried to lift off and ended up crashing into a local Wendys. The smoke enhanced that beautiful reddening sunset between the palm trees. Synthwave was pounding from the EMV’s speakers as the dejected police officer threw his cap on the ground and said that that was yet another toll runner that they’d never be able to catch.

Roll credits.

There was a little more to this mechanically.

As I recall the Medic ran into a complication where he was able to stabilize the client Shadowrunner but the painkiller medication he shot her up with, she was evidently dependent on, and that would complicate her actual healing when he tried further healing checks. Then the GM ruled the Shadowrunner was healthy enough in the moment to steal the police’s aircraft.

Why did the police vehicle crash into a Wendy’s? Well, I recall the police drew a critical failure for pursuit of the suspect and it certainly fit the moment.

Oh, and the pulsing synthwave was real. The GM was piping in cyberpunk and synthwave from his discord channel. It added to the ambiance.

I don't have any solid "this is a great transition from 5e" recommendations, but if you are looking for weird/awesome monsters in a sufficiently unique setting, then let me recommend two settings: The Ultraviolet Grasslands and Vaults of Vaarn.

The Ultraviolet Grasslands is by Luka Rejec. It is a weird world Oregon Trail-like caravanner game inspired by psychedelic heavy metal and the Dying Earth genre. It is very good.

Some details.

7 unusual factions, from sentient mind-controlling cats to many-bodied porcelain princes, and dozens of backgrounds for characters

Streamlined character rules make for smoother gameplay, while an expanded array of caravan options, vehicles, and equipment lets you equip your party for any eventuality. A brand-new bestiary section offers a menagerie of friends and foes to encounter, and revamped spells give you more magical tactics to explore. (2nd Edition)

Fancy a companion on your epic journey? Choose from a table of 50 adorable pets. To keep you organized, there are revamped character and caravan sheets. And, to fuel your wanderlust, there's an expanded map featuring the whole Circle Sea region. (2nd Edition)

https://www.exaltedfuneral.com/products/uvg-2e 2nd Edition

https://wizardthieffighter.itch.io/ultraviolet-grasslands-and-the-black-city-uvg 1st Edition

Vaults of Vaarn is based loosely on Gamma World but it's weirder. It also cites Caves of Qud the critically acclaimed goon made roguelike also loosely based on Gamma World.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/333640/Caves_of_Qud/

Some details for Issue #1.

Full rules for play, based on the light, easy-to-learn Knave system.

Five player ancestries with detailed character generation tables. Play as a haughty true-kin, a mutated cacogen, a mechanical synth, a feral newbeast, or a fungal mycomorph.
Twisted mutations, psychic gifts, and cybernetic implants to further augment your character.

120 Exotica, the strange and valuable far-future relics that can be discovered in the vaults beneath Vaarn.

A bestiary of 28 ferocious science-fantasy monsters that lurk in the blue wastes.

Nine pages of content generation tables that allow a referee to spark ideas for their own vision of Vaarn. Generate desert ruins, NPCs, trading caravans, nomadic clans, arcology domes, esoteric drugs, forgotten gods, and more.

As I recall, 5 Leagues includes rules for generating dungeons, but I haven't finished reading the book so I don't remember how sophisticated the generated dungeon design is.

Given the number of supplemental quest books with Rangers of Shadow Deep, the dungeons of 5 Leagues and the setup of Frostgrave I think your 3D printed dungeon blocks would be well served in any or all of these rulesets. I will say that Rangers of Shadow Deep and 5 Leagues are primarily written as solo games but there is coop support for both.

On this topic, I've found that it's good for me to have an outline of what the world is doing, which gives the players the choice of what they want to interact with. I really like using a table from the old Companion DM's book from BECMI D&D, where it gives different percentile chances for various events, like fires, earthquakes, food shortages, etc. Where I differ is that the chart says to generate those events over the course of a year, where I do it quarterly, and see what comes up. This gives me a bare bones framework to start with, gives a ton of plot hooks, and leaves enough open to figure out what I can dangle in front of the players, and what would end up happening if they left everything alone.

Would this contain the table from the old Companion DM book you are talking about? https://preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/17167/DD-Master-Set-BECMI-ed-Basic

On my table, I have been reading up on the naval wargame Fighting Sail - Fleet Actions 1775 - 1815 published by Osprey and written by Ryan Miller. I was looking for an Age of Sail Napoleonic era wargame because the initial ship-to-ship combat actions I tested out with my group were considered too simple and not fun enough.

I chose Fighting Sail after reading this review from wargame designer Blood and Spectacles. https://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2016/12/review-fighting-sail-osprey-wargame.html

What really confirmed my purchase was finding the youtube channel the Joy of Wargames and their about 30 minute review. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUnRK-90pEk

Fighting Sail is more of a fleet combat game, with 6 or more ships to a side. However there is a "Frigate Duel Minigame" which I am probably going to rely heavily on and maybe mod.

For some reason Fighting Sail is cheaper at WargameVault than Osprey's website so save a few bucks by going there if you are interested. https://www.wargamevault.com/product/151677/Fighting-Sail--Fleet-Actions-1775--1815

Anyone remember Dragon Dice?

The ad is from 1995. I made a offhand joke about them earlier today ... and then decided to do a quick google search. I was stunned that Dragon Dice are still being produced, there is another game made by the same company called Demon Dice (featuring collectable d6s which are all demonic units that fight for Archdemons of Hell), and there is a facebook group for Dragon Dice players.

Anyone know the story on how this game managed to survive?

1) Ability to stream music to 5 people.
2) Music comes from files on my hard drive, or that I upload to something, since I customize the files to loop better.
3) Either a folder system or using my actual Windows Explorer interface for track selection.
4) Optional but preferable: volume control on the receivers' end.

Anyone familiar with a setup that might handle this?

I've heard of https://www.kenku.fm/ being used but I haven't done any research on it to determine if it fits your criteria. Might be worth looking into.

How many of these have you actually tested? Any highlights?

Very good question. I've only tested like three; Mutant: Year Zero, Birthright and (WFR 2nd)Renegade Crowns. However I have thoughts on some others that I have read.

Birthright (AD&D); Seeds of Wars— So back in the day I actually played in a campaign of Birthright where each player was the Regent of their own small piece of land. If you are not familiar with Birthright, it is basically AD&D’s attempt to do Game of Thrones before GoT was a thing. I do remember that some of the Regent rules (base building) were useable but the wargame that came with Birthright was heavily dominated by ranged units and that seemed like a major oversight to me. Also, I recall buying the Birthright Book of Magecraft and the rules therein for managing Mage resources in a piece of land were about as exciting as doing real life taxes. Maybe I’m not giving that book a fair shake but I do recall being bored to death by that chapter when it came to designing ley lines between plots of land and figuring out how they worked.

Now Seeds of Wars is the spiritual successor to Birthright, with rules for Bards’ domains, and I own the book but I haven’t gone in depth as to the base management building section to really have an opinion on it yet.

Silent Legions--I haven’t used the build a cult, and then cult vs cult warfare systems but they seem really cool. Cults have three attributes: Muscle, Influence and Sorcery. These attributes vary in value from 1 to 7, 6-7 being a value for a world-wide cult or some cult of similar power. Also, cults have Power, which is a resource they spend, specifically on Assets or Asset upkeep. Assets are like equipment for a cult. For example, Assets can be anything from a Corrupt Cop, or a Fortified Lair to a Sorcerous Atrocity. These specific Assets play a role in the cult vs cult warfare mini game.

Wicked Ones – So Wicked Ones is sadly unavailable though legitimate means anymore because something happened with the developer that I am uncertain about and it was taken down from drivethrurpg. However, I will point it out because even though I haven’t played it seems pretty cool. Based on Blades in the Dark, the Wicked Ones base building system is about designing and cooperatively building a dungeon for your Wicked Ones (dungeon denizens). You can expand the base dungeon and hire minions to populate it with downtime actions or gold. As it stands, you can build one of 5 types of dungeons and each dungeon time has 6 Tier 3 rooms. For example, you can build an Enclave which is dungeon infused with Arcane magic and could start with the Academy or Potion Lab rooms. Management of a dungeon involves dungeon defense say from a party of heroes, and possible calamities or discoveries affecting your dungeon.

Mutant: Year Zero-- I ran Mutant: Year Zero as a hexcrawl in the Zone a few years ago. I think it was only 3-5 sessions, thus the players only got 3-5 base building actions; so, we didn’t get into the base management rules very deeply.

In short your player’s post-apocalyptic base (the Ark) has four attributes: Food Supply, Culture (sort of knowledge), Technology, and Warfare (your base’s defense). Players can increase these attributes by undertaking projects or turning in Artifacts you find in the Zone. One project is taken by the people of the Ark per game session, and there is sort of a tech tree for projects with various bonuses to the Ark’s attributes upon completion of a project. Projects can range from Pigsty to Temples to Cannibalism if things are really on the edge. I liked the rules and our minor use of them well enough. I would have liked to see a more detailed project tech tree, but I just want more granular base management rules in general so I think they were sufficient.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd Edition, Renegade Crowns – As I’ve written on the blog, Renegade Crowns is not really a base management game exactly; it is more of a worldbuilding tool. it provides background charts and tables for developing petty kingdoms and a simple system for resolving Internal and External problems for a realm.

I did use the random charts and tables to make my own petty kingdoms area and I documented that here.
https://nightmarethoughts6.blogspot.com/search/label/Renegade%20Crowns

As I recall I wanted expansion of some of the tables, specifically the enemy tables because otherwise you would be running into the same Orcs/Undead/Bandits over and over again.

Not sure if there's a dedicated suggestions thread but I'll try here: I'm looking for a beginner-friendly miniatures game that's not super expensive to get into to play with my wife and I and maybe some friends. Preferably low model count. I've played Gaslands with her which was super fun and that's about it.

I have 40k and AoS armies but it's a bit much to get into.

The indy miniatures game thread you are looking for is here: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3253037 The OP is in process of being updated as I understand it.

You've got good advice here already with Kill Team, Frostgrave, etc.. I was going to recommend Gaslands Refuelled but you've already played it!

If you are looking for force against force you may want to take a look at One Page Rules, specifically Grimdark Future.

If you are looking for skirmish games with PvP and coop options, take a look at what Osprey has on offer, specifically from authors Ash Barker (Last Days-zombies wargame) and Patrick Todoroff (Zona Alfa-STALKER wargame). I would be remiss if I didn't mention my personal favorite author Ivan Sorensen who created 5 Parsecs from Home (scifi) and 5 Leagues from the Borderlands (fantasy) adventures/skirmish/solo games published by Modiphius. The above wargames are usually available in pdf through WargameVault.

For those who don't follow the most inexpensive plastic miniatures around, Frostgrave and Stargrave have boxed sets at about $27 to $30 for 20 plastic miniatures and you will have bits left over.

Thanks! How is 5 Parsecs from Home? I've never played a solo game like this before. The only solo RPG I've played was 1000 year old vampire which I liked but it seems very different.

I like 5 Parsecs from Home quite a bit, but as I recall some posters have disagreed saying the combat resolution mechanic is too simple, and the enemy AI is too undefined. I'll elaborate.

The combat resolution mechanic for shooting is as follows:
1) Roll a 1d6 and add the Combat Skill of the Shooter
2) Target is within 6 inches and in the open; Successful to hit is 3+
3) Target is within weapon range and in the open OR within 6 inches and in cover; Successful to hit is 5+
4) Target is within weapon range and in Cover; Successful to hit is 6+

Some people find this too simple. I have found it swift and punchy for the number of miniatures on the table (10-20 on average).

Regarding the criticism that the enemy AI is too undefined, I'll post an excerpt from the book and you can make your own decision.

quote:

Enemy Movement

The way the enemy moves on the field requires the player to inject a modest amount of “artificial intelligence” into proceedings. It is assumed that the player will make decisions based on what is reasonable, but can also operate enemies according to one of seven broad AI types, shown below. It is up to the player to decide how strictly to adhere to these.

Cautious
• Cautious enemies will attempt to stay in Cover whenever possible.

• Figures with an opponent in sight and range will remain where they are and take Aimed shots. Otherwise, they will advance in or behind terrain features, trying to establish Line of Sight to opposing figures.

• They will attempt to engage targets at as close to maximum range as possible, and will not advance voluntarily within 12” of opposition.

• As a general rule, they will not enter Brawling combat.

Aggressive

• Aggressive enemies with opponents in sight will advance at least half a move towards them, attempting to remain in
Cover if possible.

• Enemies that are unable to see any opposition, or which are within 12”, will advance as fast as possible towards the nearest opponent, attempting to enter into a Brawl.

• They will not enter a Brawl with an opponent that has higher Combat Skill.

• Heavy weapon figures will not move if they have a Line of Sight to a target.

Tactical

• Tactical enemies will advance at half speed, always retaining Cover where possible. They will cross open ground at
full speed, if needed.

• They will attempt to close to within 12” of their opponents, then will move to outflank and get clear Line of Sight where possible.

• If within one move and possessing higher combat skill, they will enter a brawl; otherwise they will fire.

• If they have a clear shot and are in Cover, they will remain in place to Aim.

• Tactical enemies will attempt to remain within 3” of a friendly figure whenever possible.

In addition to Cautious, Aggressive and Tactical; there are details for Rampaging, Defensive, Beast and Guardian enemies movement on page 43.

It's interesting you mention 1000 Year Old Vampire, because 5 Parsecs can have a journaling aspect to it if you want to go that route. Personally I find 5 Parsecs to be a great story generator for the characters of your crew. The youtube channel Me, Myself and Die! features a voice actor (Trevor Devall) narrating his live solo play of 5 Parsecs and that can give you an idea of how things go. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E23tj_vkQnk&t=9s

Also I have written up a narrative based on the details rolled on the charts and tables in 5 Parsecs and come up with a story for the triumphs and tragedies of my crew which I've documented on my blog starting here: https://nightmarethoughts6.blogspot.com/2021/10/5-parsecs-from-home-review.html

Before I move on, let me admit my bias; I am on Ivan Sorensen's discord and have communicated with him. He is very accessable.

If you are looking for a more roleplaying scenarios bent to your wargaming, let me also recommend Rangers of Shadow Deep (fantasy) by Joseph A. McCullough (of Frost/Stargrave fame). And tenatively When Nightmares Come (modern supernatural investigation) which was released yesterday by Patrick Todoroff. I say tenatively because I am still reading the book, but what I have read so far detailing a mechanical bridge between the roleplaying and wargaming parts of the game has been very interesting, and dare I say innovative?

Also I am going to shill for Zona Alfa, the STALKER wargame, because I've enjoyed it playing PvP and I need to play more of it.

My write up for that is here:

If you ever wanted a small continent to be generated with towns, inns, NPCs, factions, dungeons and more with OSR statistics, try the FREE generator Hexroll, 2nd edition. Frankly I am very impressed.

https://hexroll.app/

Everything is hyperlinked so you can explore relationships between things.

For example I examined the town of Millrock and looked at a Baker there, expecting baked goods. Evidently the Baker Aurelianus is a member of the faction The Dark Wyverns, a syndicate conspiring to collect protection money for an unknown purpose based in a different town. Also Aurelianus has received a mysterious box and is afraid to open it. Could the box be from The Dark Wyverns ordering the Baker to do something nefarious and the Baker wants out of the organization? Instant plot hooks.

It also describes dungeons, area by area. This is a dungeon adjacent to Millrock called The Temple of Infernal Pits. Random encounters include rats and harpies.

Hexroll also claims to have a VTT integrated into it's dungeon map.

I can see this being very useful for Solo roleplaying.

Also there is the possiblity of modding this program. Guidebook is here: https://docs.hexroll.app/
