I was a SP5 for exactly one month. Pinned it on 1 September, then on 1 October, they got rid of all specialist ranks except for E4.

Like everything else in the Army, they took a good idea and ruined it. The worst thing about the specialist rank was that it was so random. There was no clear divide between combat arms = NCO, support = specialist.

For example, there were SP5s that were tank crewmen while at the same time, at my first duty station assigned to an HHC, my Platoon Sergeant was a SP6 (he was in charge of the BN Aid Station).

I think it came down to whatever the position on the Unit Manning Roster was, although I also saw "lateral appointments" - SP5s made into SGTs if they were in a leadership position, etc.

I guess if they were going to do it half-assed like that, they were better off scrapping it altogether.

I once saw a dude in the airport with an Army Excellence In Competition Badge on his dress greens.

Two spinal fusions.

One knee surgery.

Too many corticosteroid injections in various joints to remember.

A drawer full of splints, braces, and wraps.

A knee replacement in the not too distant future.
