I'd love to do a trade and looked into it for carpentry, but I'm old enough and have enough "responsibilities" at this point that taking a couple years to apprentice before I can make more money isn't a position I can be in.

It would have been great when I was 18, of course. But its too late now unless someone can pay me to take time off and go through those programs. Same for welding etc.

I went through trade school for electrical work a few years ago and post-covid I'm hoping to get back on Journeyman path so I'm starting to look for apprenticeships

my job right out of school was in industrial maintenance so I was working alot with 3-phase powered electrical motors but it wasn't an apprentice program so all I have are my school hours so far

I lost that job a while ago so my work record is laughable, unfortunately but such is life for those of us with sadbrains

the problem I have is I live in TN so a)lol minimum wage for skilled labor for my next 3 years and b)making sure any apprenticeship I get is legit and I actually get the credit I need for a J card

you probably already qualify for a JO card

I don't think so, I have 2000/8000 hours completed from school plus the vast majority of the required classwork and the required OSHA certs too but I need another 6000 hours of actually working in an officially recognized apprenticeship, at least that's my memory of the NCCER reqs

And people are like oh just get those 45 year old miners/factory workers or w/e to learn a new trade, as if they can just go work for like 6000 hours lol or whatever

I wouldn't have been able to take those classes if I had kids or a mortgage or anything like that, you can take night classes but even that's difficult if you have family responsibilities or you need to be working a second job to keep a roof over your head

my sister's friends have a truffle farm and they spent 5 figures to get a trained truffle-sniffing dog from Europe and then picked up a second dog from a shelter so the truffle-sniffing dog would have a friend and it turns out the shelter dog is much more reliable at sniffing out truffles

lol the judge gave him triple what the sentencing guidelines call for

Guilty pleas are good for the government because they conserve court resources. In exchange, judges can make sentencing concessions based on the individual's acceptance of responsibility, according to the American Bar Association.
Even though Rayyan pleaded guilty, however, his sentence was not reduced. Though the maximum sentencing for each count was 10 years, the agreed guidelines for his gun violations called for a total of 15 to 21 months in prison. He got 60 months. It was the middle ground between prosecutors' suggested sentence of 96 months and the defense's 15-month proposal.
The defense cautioned that a lengthy prison sentence could cause Rayyan's mental health to deteriorate, leading him right back into the ISIS vortex.
The judge acknowledged that prison is not an ideal therapeutic environment for individuals struggling with addiction, suicidal thoughts and violent revenge fantasies. He wrote, however, that prison would provide Rayyan with "needed educational or vocational training, medical care, or other correctional treatment in the most effective manner."
