Does Groupon resell stuff from China now? I thought their business model was strong arming events, restaurants, service providers etc into offering steep discounts in something at a financial loss for them while Groupon takes a cut.

Groupon's business model is tricking people into buying garbage package deals to get them in the door at businesses that will treat them like poo poo because they aren't paying full freight

yeah, in the early 2010s I used it for some hotel and cruise deals in Turkey and it was pretty good for that. then the deals started sucking and you got a hundred competitors with similar names, like grupanya.

yea the shittiest thing was food because people would be getting these "great deals" but then tip on post-subsidized price, so like $100 of food for $40 and tipping $7 when it should be $15+. i did great some great food deals but then i'd usually just put all the savings into a tip, but i imagine i was probably the only one.

U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve drops to lowest level since 1987

quote:

HOUSTON, May 16 (Reuters) - The amount of crude oil in the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) dropped by 5 million barrels in the week to May 13, data from the U.S. Department of Energy showed.

Stockpiles in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) fell to 538 million barrels, the lowest since 1987.

About 3.9 million barrels of sour crude was released into the market, while about 1.1 million barrels of sweet crude was issued, according to the data.

I suppose it's not news to the thread, but the US SPR is now at a 35 year low.

they had a weird fancy toaster they used to toast their stuff, but their sandwiches were a lot more subsstantial. https://www.quiznos.com/

if youve ever had potbelly, not too different, except all the subs were toasted by default in a neat conveyor belt thing. also free various pickles.

Current release is a third of the reserve, so bottom should be ~370m.

It is going to be very expensive to refill if prices don't come down.

They are still technically around, 176 left in the US.

They were toasted subs (the reason all of them have a toaster now) but I always thought they were really heavy on the Cheese and sodium. They felt worse for you then a 90s/2000s era subway sandwich, which in turn back then tasted almost like real food.

I thought Jimmy Jon’s always tasted weird.

lol yeah it owns. it's also amazing what people will do to save $2. I went to Costco at like 1pm on a Monday to grab some things and was going to fill up but it was a madmax thunderdome hellscape at the pumps, easily a 45 minute wait -- so I just lolled, grabbed some things, and stopped by Arco with no wait and paid maybe $2 more. $2 for 45 minutes of one's time baking inside their car with the AC on full-blast seems like more than a fair trade but carbrains gunna carbrain.

$10/gal by end of the year is going to be amazing.

They aren't expected to and the plan is to start filling up after the mid terms. That should put price pressure on the markets too lol

Costco gas is so popular at our local Costco now that the lines fill up adjacent streets and parking lots and create a gigantic gridlocked exclusion zone for blocks around

People will wait for an hour to save $5, it's completely deranged

it's funny because the differential hasn't actually changed that much (around 0.2 - 0.3 max), so by a % it's not even that good of a deal compared to pre-pandemic when no one gave a poo poo. it's probably not even saving $5, even less with the gas wasted idling in max AC. like it was $5.49 at Costco vs $5.69 at Arco, seems like a no brainer to not wait an hour. i guess if you were filling up 100 gallon ford f950 freedom rancher limited 9/11 edition truck maybe yeah, but for typical 12-15 gal tank just lol
