A foreign ship can stop at multiple US ports without a foreign port in between but it cannot pick up goods in one US port and take them on to the next.

It's more of an alternative to air freight, though, for goods that need to be in Europe relatively quickly (~10 days as opposed to ~3 months by sea) There's also a huge amount of trade through the Suez to and from everywhere in Eurasia, it's not like you have to go through Panama or around Africa
