BigPaddy posted:

I worked somewhere that did the whole "We only hire the best" crap. What they really meant was they only hire the best who live in a specific metro area who are willing to gamble a chunk of their salary on RSUs with promises that the company was close to making number go up*, had specific experience with a legacy Java framework and could decipher a decade of rats nest code with no documentation or support. So they had a crew of lifers who had been there for years and either you got in with the lifers and became a lifer with no hope or waited for your first set of RSUs to vest then got the gently caress out.

* It did not go up, in fact it dropped to 1/3 of its price.

This business is going to collapse, or get bought out and then drag down some other business.

Companies spend ridiculous amounts of money on consultants to tell them what they are doing wrong and where they could improve, paid to people in no position to have any idea, while the actual answers walk out the door. Can't listen to the rank and file though, that looks too much like workplace democracy, AKA socialism. They don't want their management egos bruised, so they aren't actually interested in the truth. Also Identifying problems could mean laying blame, and if all the decisions in a unit are made by one guy there is only one place to honestly lay that blame.

So it is in the best interest of the people high up in a hierarchy (rarely are they actually leaders) for problems undermining that hierarchy to never be identified by anyone at their level or higher.

The people at the bottom are the only ones who know how anything works, they are the only ones who really know what does not work and why. The managers just change the inputs and see what happens to the outputs, the actual operation of the organization is a black box to anyone more than one level above the bottom, and is obscured even to the front line managers. And all of those managers are disincentivized from ever doing anything at all to change that.
