Quantum of Phallus posted:Will Naito 2020 thread win be looked back upon like Miz 2011 Not even remotely, Naito's win in January last year was fantastic and the culmination of a multiple year storyline, and even though he didn't win any other months in 2020 he was only surpassed by Jon Moxley and (only right at the very end of the year) by Go Shiozaki in terms of total votes achieved. He had a fantastic G1, he avenged his title loss/betrayal to get it back, and he got to main event the Tokyo Dome again in 2021 with yet another superb match. All that in a year where New Japan itself didn't run at all for several months due to a global pandemic.

2020 was a remarkable year for a lot of reasons, some bad (the world), some good (the wrestling), some awful (World Wrestling Entertainment, which for the first time didn't win a SINGLE monthly poll) but it ends for us in the newly re-Christened Punchsport Pagoda with, for the second time in a row, the AEW World Champion winning Champ of the Year. Not Chris Jericho this time though, his successor Jon Moxley had a phenomenal year in the ring, on promos and from a personal standpoint... all in spite of a global pandemic that could have destroyed what was FINALLY his time to shine. With close to 60% of the vote, he easily eclipsed Chris Jericho's impressive percentage of 45% in 2019, and his closest competitors for votes all year - Go Shiozaki and Tetsuya Naito - didn't even come close with only Shiozaki breaking double-digits in total percentage of all votes cast while Naito couldn't even hit 5%. Yuka Sakazaki, whose own title run was severely undercut by COVID limitations, managed a very respectable 8.65%. The story of the vote was clear, as far as Punchsport Pagoda was concerned, the Champion of the Year could only be Jon Moxley. Previous winners, click the picture for poll results (where available) for that month. * No polls were held in the first three months of 2008. In 2020/2021, polls are being held to try and emulate who might have won in those months, though nobody will ever know for sure.
