Been playing more Zeus and now I'm just picturing this style of game with the focus on building looping roads but with a pixar's cars aesthetic overlaid because really you can basically just sub in walkers for cars and the blocks are all just various interlocking racetracks anyway.

I need a game that is pausable, or can be set up to put on 1 speed and allow to just keep going.

I dusted off Rimworld and perused my modlist. That's a whole session by itself, and I love that aspect of the game and stumbling back to modlist after having my attention ripped away was amusing. I thought about Surviving Mars. I could conceivably run that on 1 speed, do a diaper change and rocking session with my baby, and be back in time to see all my Macro Will be done.

There's always kenshi, but leaving that unattended for any time fills me with a similar dread of "oh gently caress I left the burp cloth directly on my sleeping baby's face".

I need a night shift game. Anno is actively hostile to this, which is a shame. I just redownloaded it before baby was born.

Workers and Resources on default speed is practically an idle game depending on how you pace yourself. Just lay out a highway and a factory complex and take a nap while it all gets built, there's really never any "oh poo poo" moments that require instant intervention so long as your citizens have power, food, and heat, and even that isn't really a big deal if you have surplus citizens or rubles to repopulate with if you accidentally killed your town.

Honestly I think that's part of what I love about it so much, I can just leave it going in the background for long periods of time without sweating it too much and come back to lay down some new construction or tweak some things or just watch it run whenever suits me.

Simcasino? I've been playing it a bunch and have even 3x speed it and walked away when I needed to collect a bit of cash.

The menus look kinda jank, but after 15 minutes it all makes sense and isn't too bad.

Often you can spend 10-30 minutes designing a new section and then just letting it auto pilot in the background/second screen while you do other things.

I've been putting a chunk of time into NIMBYRails and I'm really enjoying it so far and making gobs of cash. I left the game running for an in game weekday and made something like 375m, I've added a fair bit since then.

I don't think I've actually gone further than 125 miles from London in any direction yet.

The demand seems way out of whack in the current build though, quite why there's >700 people sitting at St Pancras waiting for a train to Edmonton at 2.45pm on a Tuesday is beyond me.

How is the supply and demand of passengers generated, anyway? Does it understand the concept of City vs Not City? Are population densities vaguely real?

What's the best Stronghold-like game in 2021? I've got Kingdoms and Castles and its cute, but the graphics are so simple it feels totally lifeless in comparison. I also don't know how I feel about the agent-based model it uses where my stone-cutters are leaving their posts to go chop down wood 300m away and my tax collector is also a part time construction worker, etc. I suppose it stabilizes a bit if you have a population surplus, but it's kind of annoying early on.

I'm trying Hammerting for the first time after this latest patch and I'm definitely liking the direction it's going but man, I got a minute into a new save and already managed to get all of my dwarves stuck just trying to build some stairs down. I'm still finding myself having to debug a lot of stuck dwarves or build specifically in ways to best avoid scenarios where dwarves could possibly get stuck, like building stairs one block at a time so they don't dig a giant hole before the resources are available and get stuck at the bottom. These are all problems other games in the genre have as well, but maybe because this game is specifically about digging down it's more prone to pathing issues? Are the stairs not supposed to be used to dig a mineshaft straight down? I was thinking about being able to designate dwarves to "Search Party" duty, where the player could hit a button for all non-stuck dwarves to drop what they're doing and resolve stuck dwarf issues by making a ladder by chaining their bodies together for the dwarf to climb up or deploy a retractable ladder or something. I'm sure there's no easy solution to this, and I am still liking the game enough to play in spite of it, but it's a bummer to have happen so soon into a new game.

Wiggles, an old game of this genre, solved that issue by having its gnomes climbing the background walls. You were still incentivized to build ladders and elevators for speed reasons, but it was an effective safeguard against your problem.

btw: Wiggles recently saw a re-release on GOG. Unfortunately, it didn't age well, it's a slog by now.

as long as you're not digging more than 4 blocks straight down at a time it should be fine. dwarves can climb sheer walls for a bit, but if there is any kind of overhang it will stop them from doing this

especially avoid digging too far straight down in the early game when you don't have enough labor to quickly build stairs, one of four workers getting stuck hurts more than one of forty

in the late game i'll dig straight down to the edge of the view distance, if only to avoid having dwarves fall to their deaths or get stuck at the bottom of a monster filled pit

Yeah I think this is part of my issue. My first natural response to starting a new game for some reason is always to build a bigass mineshaft so I can build to the left or right of it as I descend. I appreciate the new stone stairs because they cover more ground, also seem like they'd be easy to remove and replace with an elevator later on since they're already 4 blocks wide.

the problem with stone stairs is that they require quarried blocks and slabs, meaning the materials have to be hauled from a quarry or nearby storage. the basic scaffold ladders are built with rock chunks, which spawn from digging sometimes and so are just lying around your base. i just use the basic scaffolds at first with a block of open space on each side so i can convert them to stairs or elevators later, but for the actual deep digging it's just basic scaffolds all the way down

i like to build across horizontally and get my base stable before i start digging down, because down = more difficult = loot and monsters, so it's better to be a little prepared. at least iron weapons and a dozen or so people to work. i also like to dig more than one shaft down at once, because you will soon tunnel into the top of a void which you can't see the bottom of so you risk dwarves falling and getting stuck with enemies and no escape. when you do encounter a void while digging down, you can instead focus on one of the parallel downward shafts and approach the void from the side, possibly seeing the bottom if not building another avenue of approach

Those are helpful tips, thank you! Seems like this new update added fluids so now there's lava and water pools which I guess will make digging down even more treacherous than normal. I always saw digging down as a means to expand my base but I guess I should probably consider building on the ground floor first before really diving down.

Question about games in the genre on the Switch.

I just picked up a switch to play JRPGs, but I'm interested in seeing what else I might like. Im not interested in ports of PC games, I would rather play cities skylines or Empire of Sin on PC if I'm going to play them.

I really appreciate the fact that there are so many kairosoft games on it, there were some that were on apple I didn't have on my phone, so I picked those up.

Other than kairosoft games, or games that are better on PC, are there any good city builder/management/strategy games on the switch?

Thanks Mayveena! I haven't played a Disgaea since 3, I hear they've really streamlined the power-levelling so maybe I'll pick up one of those.

If the thread isn't aware, Kairosoft games are legit, even if they are designed for mobile. Grand Prix Story is one of the most fun simulation games I've ever played, and I picked it up for a smooth 10bux factoring in a discount from my Nintendo coins.

you'll want to dig down a little bit but if you dig up there is enough space to build out a simple base

before you really start digging down with intention, i'd suggest you set up the following in roughly this order:

-quarries
-metalsmithing
-housing for your first crew
-food and alcohol
-healing items

you'll need alcohol at least for morale, and food for energy and healing for HP gains. dorfs get upset if they don't have housing to hoard their pay. upgrade to copper gear at minimum or iron would be better before you do any serious fighting

i posted this earlier itt but assuming that the horizontal plane on which the cave entrance spawns is level 0, and each level is 12 blocks high (11 open blocks and one floor block, meaning 6 scaffolds or 3 stairs high), then my usual base layout is

levels 2+: housing
level 1: food, quarries, first aid, arcane
level 0: cooking, tavern, cavemouth, metals production
level -1: more crafting and storage
level -2 and -3: big crafting, more storage, elevators
levels -4 and below: just mines

the sweet spot for dorfs seems to be about 30 or so, more than that and they are a pain to manage without really getting anything done faster. i'd say don't start digging deeply until you've got a dozen, mostly so that if you come across a lair or two near each other you can just swarm it with burly iron spear equipped dorfs. set your initial smithy to automatically produce copper lanterns for sale, or you can sell off quarry produce if you like

e: oh, also, never just dig a shaft straight down. you can just order your dorfs to build scaffolds straight down and they'll dig out the space then build the scaffold to help them get back up. when excavating a new level in the deep mines, i like to build my 6 scaffolds straight down then dig horizontally across to another shaft, this will usually generate enough rock chunks that even if the dorfs are stuck at the bottom they will be able to build their own scaffolds to get out of the pit

Be warned that Kairosoft games can get very samey, without much replayability. They're pretty distilled number go up games with a little montage of how you're doing, and you have the same limited choices all game for the most part. There's little strategy.

Grand Prix was fun to play though.

I have been playing Boxing Gym Story the last week or so and actually have been enjoying it a lot. I like the Kairosoft games that give you something fun to look like Grand Prix's races and the boxing matches are pretty fun to watch in this game. That said, I've hit the point that I think I'm done with it now because there's just so much downtime between each match and they don't let you use the fast forward until you've beaten the game once. I don't even know what "beating the game" looks like, my dude was the world champion across 3 different weight classes and now am forced to fight "Kairobot" which is a dude with 999 stats who loving clobbers me in 10 seconds in a tournament that I'm pretty sure is designed to force you to retire your OP boxer.

He's been pushing out a lot of tweaks and QoL improvements and it's come quite a way since release. My London & surrounding areas game is starting to chug a little due to the sheer number of trains. The fastest speed (no map or UI) is barely quicker than the one below now.

That save game is now totally hosed because I found out the hard way that there is no train pathfinding AI whatsoever. There is no programming to account for lines that converge at a station and then split again at all. Trains just enter junctions and stop and block stations and that's it for your train system. I get that it's programmed by a single dude but like not having even a rudimentary "don't enter a junction unless the track ahead is clear" is a pretty massive oversight for a game that's exclusively built around trains and advertised as being a way to test realistic fantasy rail networks. Signals need to be made priority #1 imo

Unrelated sidebar on signalling. I love the shared signalling language we have in all train games now but I'm still waiting for something like a dispatch mode in a game where you build the network (so discounting some of the sim dispatchers here). I want to feel the need for a new siding or hate myself for the time table I set and yell at trucks stuck on level crossings.

Train Valley is almost that. So like a crunchy Train Valley.
