pretty good banana today. maybe just slightly underripe - texture pretty good but a bit of a starchy mouthfeel. flavour a little bland. tomorrow's banana should be right in the sweet spot |

Bartlett pear, a little on the small side, and a bit of impact damage in one spot. Texture was optimal - very good crunch. Flavour a bit mild, but as any fruit eater will know there's a tradeoff to be had wrt ripeness between firm texture and flavour intensity. there's a lot of controversy on this point, but personally I put greater value on good texture

just had a couple mandarin oranges. both pretty average I'd say, more on the tart side than sweet. segments fairly juicy but not the most plump I've ever had

Heather Papps posted:how was the peeling experience? (i also wanted to ask this about the banana but was shy) thanks for your question. The peeling was pretty good - as we all know, this is one of the strengths of a mandarin over larger orange varietals such as navels. The peel of the second fruit left a bit of extra pith on the outside face of some of the segments, but not enough to affect flavour noticeably. As for the banana, there was a bit of peel splitting, as one expects with a banana still showing some green https://i.imgur.com/xQxnooW.png |

if you recall, reader, my banana review of yesterday, jan. 5, you'll know i predicted today's banana would be of optimal ripeness. I'm glad to day my prediction was accurate. The texture was still quite firm and the flavour heightened. an early contender for banana of the year.

ok I'll do my best. Imagine, if you will, that you're biting into an optimally ripe banana. it was very much like that.

apologies for the delay, my day job temporarily pulled me away from my true passion. Pleased to say today's banana was also very good. usually the friday bananas are too ripe for my preferences and almost unpleasant, but this one was still just a hair outside the optimal ripeness window - still pretty firm and not over-sweet https://i.imgur.com/xQxnooW.png |

i've just had my second ever mango. The first one i ate (this would be at least a year ago) was severely underripe, not a great experience. This time, I let it ripen for several days on the counter, to the point it had a fair amount of give. as it turns out, this was still not ripe enough. it was fairly bland - hardly any sweetness - not much flavour at all aside from a bit of a floral note. It's also a fairly large fruit to eat in one sitting, and relatively labour-intensive. Maybe sometime soon I'll get another mango and let it ripen much further. it could be a problem of buying mangos in winter, far from the equator, maybe you just cant get good mangos here. more experimentation is needed before i can come down firmly on mangos.

frankly im not sure the difference between tangerines, mandarin oranges and clementines. i think theyre all sold pretty interchangably here. i am very much in favour of them and i think theyre vastly superior to larger oranges.

ive never had passion fruit, i could look for them next trip. althouh i googled them and i had no idea they look like a geode filled with little yellow condoms which isnt terribly appealing. i havent had cherries for a very long time so i cant stand by this, but i have slightly negative feelings for them https://i.imgur.com/xQxnooW.png |

i am coming out as Pro dragon fruit ---haters back off---- the flavour is mild but pleasant, the texture is delightful - much like a kiwi, and the seeds add a little extra character. great eating experience. only downside is theyre a little pricey https://i.imgur.com/xQxnooW.png |

This week's banana bunch had me a bit anxious, as the colour of the peels is quite dull, and none of the bananas available for selection in the store had much green left on them. The texture of this first banana was very good, they don't come much firmer. There was something a bit off about the flavour, though - hard to put a finger on. This could well be a symptom of expectation - the dull peel colour affecting my perception. An aside - did you know you can put your bananas in the fridge to keep them from further ripening? the peel will go brown quite rapidly, but the fruit will not degrade. I tried this for a short while, but i couldn't get over the psychological effect of the browned peel. it's true what they say that we eat with more senses than just taste. https://i.imgur.com/xQxnooW.png |

kuskus posted:beer pal i was curious if you do estimates? mixed messages from this banana with the green stem but a fair amount of brown spots. From the appearance of the indentation at the point of peel rupture I would guess it's fairly ripe and will have a moderately soft texture and a moderately sweet flavour. i don't know about regional variants but by the standards of what im used to its a very small banana. im not going to be baited by the improper opening technique https://i.imgur.com/xQxnooW.png |
