I used to wonder where Dragon Ball is gonna go after the characters get strong enough to tear apart metaphysics easily and all that, but I guess they're pretty much already there. Like the God of all Existence is now a side character, and it even sometimes gets involved to beat the bad guys. I guess they could make just another race of even more tough beings once Goku powers up past all the gods.

I've seen DBZ all the way through, including all filler, like three times just as a consequence of being in elementary school at the time it was airing on Toonami. I love the show obviously but I don't really know how a first-time viewer would feel about it. The show's storytelling and writing gets really flaky and weird around the Android Saga.

MHA feels like the author decided to pick a grab bag of popular superhero/shonen ideas as the foundation for his story and then just kept pressing on from there without thinking too hard about how much sense any of it makes. I already had lost a lot of interest but after Deku turns out to have six quirks on top of already having One For All (which is already the best quirk in existence) I just can't be bothered to care anymore. Wow how is this guy, who is now by a wide margin the strongest dude alive and has every possible advantage given to him, gonna end up becoming the greatest hero? Who can say? e: MHA would have ended up being a hell of a lot better if it was about a powerless Deku getting through things with his knowledge and ingenuity, rather than just about a kid arbitrarily being handed the most powerful weapon in existence. I don't think rezero is that good or that bad. There are a lot of tropes of isekai that are built on power fantasies that rezero kind of subverts but it also kind of plays it straight in a lot of ways in a way that starts to kind of clash with the main premise after a while. Anyway the second season got way too contrived and I no longer knew what the hell was going on because they put a big gap in the middle of the season where they didn't air anything because of covid so I stopped watching

Castlevania season 2 was bad enough with the main cast hanging around doing nothing in a library all season, only to easily beat Dracula and all of his forces in two episodes. Then Season 3 was just interminable. The main characters are walking around a bland old village with some mysteriously evil religious guys. ooh I wonder what's gonna happen. Then they wasted so much time on the dumb vampire femdom stuff with the white-haired guy. Has season 4 fixed the problem where they clearly only have the budget for a very small number of action sequences so they spend the entire rest of the season just having the characters chatter and chatter?

I understand wanting to be true to the script, but I don't think some people realize the power of localizing something so that it sounds/reads naturally lol I like the english that comes out of bad Japanese-to-English translations sometimes. translation is translation, but even if you say that, trying to stick close to the spirit of the script is really admirable!

More naturalistic translation would be ideal but that requires the translators to have a very strong grasp of all the nuances of the dialogue and the ability to express them well in English which can be a lot to ask. At least we're not getting things like the Big Green dub anymore

It's a shame cause the Demon Slayer manga is a fun read but the fight scenes are so much better animated it's not even funny and since it's a dumb shonen the fight scenes are pretty much the only thing to see

Demon Slayer does have a main character who is a completely uncomplicated, pure, kindhearted goody two shoes which is actually something kinda rare in shonen manga for whatever reason. Maybe that has something to do with it? usually shonen protagonists are weird psychopaths who end up being liked cause they kill worse things.

I was thinking of DBZ and One Piece are the two biggest and most defining shonen series and Luffy/goku are both weird freaks with extremely strange codes of ethics. Goku in particular happily and repeatedly lets genocidal tyrants do whatever the hell they want so they can give him a decent fight later down the road. It's why Gon in Hunter x Hunter works as a deconstruction of the typical shonen protagonist. He's got all the same goals and drives as any other shonen protag and he ends up a creepy maniac who destroys himself but yeah I guess Kenshin does indeed have Tanjiro beat in terms of being a dopey nice guy

Luffy is similar to Goku in that he goes around doing whatever he wants for selfish reasons with the end result tending to be that he helps people out significantly more than he hurts them and opposes larger threats so he ends up being well-liked by both fans and characters in the world. However I don't actually give two shits about how many shonen heroes are on the light side vs the dark side. I just thought tanjiro was a good version of the goody two shoes character

Tanjiro feels like he works cause he's cartoonishly nice and that's his most defining trait but his niceness doesn't get in the way of his goals or his effectiveness, doesn't stop him from standing up for himself, and ends up becoming a boon for him more than anything. Contrast that to Deku from MHA who started out as the nicest, purest, most best little guy in the world and then he stays that way, doesn't change at all, constantly breaks his body into little tiny pieces for the sake of being a nice guy (it was cool the first time, but come on. how many times can he break his arms going past his limit), and constantly eats poo poo from his "best friend" who viciously hates him.

MHA had a winning formula with "school for superheroes" but the school stuff was always far in the background. Especially after the majority of Deku's classmates turn out to pretty much be irrelevant. I don't think Horikoshi had a plan when he started writing MHA and I don't think he has one now.
