Hey all! I used to post here but never really had much poker success. I did really enjoy the goon series of poker however, did pretty well in those.

Used to play a lot of cake poker, now I sometimes play on global poker.

There's a Mahjong thread in TG, and aldantefax already asked me (in the tg chat thread) if I should move it to PitR. I'm going to leave it open to the goons in that thread, but: you could totally just make a new Mahjong thread here, perhaps it would be more focused on the gambling aspects? 100% it's allowed and encouraged to talk about any and all games that have or still traditionally involve betting, in PitR.

I've never really gambled in any way so it's unlikely I'll hang around very long but I think it's pretty cool to see this forum return after all this time. I definitely remembered the subforum name even while it was gone as one of the funnier ones. Anyone remember what caused it to get closed originally?

I'm an ik who plays a shitton of riichi (mjsoul, not for money) and yes absolutely. If you want to make a general thread for traditional games with gambling, or a mahjong specific one, whatever you like. The former would, in my opinion, include things like how amazing backgammon becomes when the doubling cube is used.

Since this is the old forum re-opened, anyone with archives can review those old threads from when this forum was closed. Just set the date at the bottom right of your screen to 2012. A few of those threads were moved to TG (and died there) but most of them remain in place.

this was the official announcement (requires archives).

Beyond what's in that first post, what I have gathered is that the subforum was closed out of a general admin impetus at that time to cut some fat from the forums, mostly on the basis that it had low traffic but also subsequent to some level of concern (the particulars I'm not familiar with) about some goons sponsoring each other or staking or maybe a misunderstanding of what cake was or whatever. Maybe. That last bit is hearsay, I haven't actually seen posts about it.

Posting traffic had declined precipitously after the so-called infamous Black Friday, when the FBI raided major sites and the feds decided to crack down on online poker. Practically overnight, millions of US poker players found they couldn't fund/withdraw from online poker using their bank, credit card, paypal, etc. and that was sufficient to kill their interest. If you read that above thread, lots of posters thought that traffic was going to return, and there were some signals that legalization was coming too. We know now, 8 years later, that the situation was not fully resolved and it remains a state-by-state question as to how easy it is to play poker online.

SA has a different set of admins and mods now, we're going to be proactive about avoiding any potential problems with goons staking or transacting directly on the forums, and we're less concerned about what "low traffic" means for a subforum or whether that's a killer for it. We also want to fold in sports betting/gambling in general, which should hopefully give the forum slightly wider appeal than it had before. I say "we," because I was afforded the opportunity to have some input and there appeared to be a consensus, but I'm not speaking for the admins and other mods here really, this is more of my own assessment. I feel pretty good about the outcome right now and I think PitR can expect to be treated fairly.

Yes!

Because I love craps, my wife only likes Black jack and neither of us are good at the other games. And I hate other craps players because they’re loud and annoying.

Also why do you ask that I color up when I’m ready to leave and when should I ask because it’s a madhouse almost all the time.

How do I be better at making your life less hard when you’re dealing with drunk people?

Hi again everyone. I'm the guy who is simultaneously glad and also kicking myself I never got into poker seriously back in the early 2000s. I've got some pretty fond memories of loving around on Stars with a bunch of you (and losing a big pot to JCarver's quads :argh:)

My poker activity these days is limited to an annual superbowl winner take all SnG with friends and $1 Spin and Gos when I remember poker exists once every 2 months. It's kind of sad. If this renews my interest maybe I'll dip back in to stars or party or whatever is good.

Hah!

I didn't know we were doing introductions! When old PITR was around I got into grinding super turbos on full tilt and just rakeback pro'd it up for a couple years there sitting on almost every table that opened. I can still see sngwiz in my sleep. I wanted to be the first guy to get the car with full tilt points on FTP, and was pretty close to it when it shut down. But the feds never gave me anything for all those points, although I did finally get my roll back. Also *still* upset about the timing of that shutdown because I *swear* I had just worked out a major hole in my game (tried to get too "unexploitable/gto" as I just piled on more and more volume, ended up not calling enough and shoving too light, especially against other regs). I'll never know for sure, cus FTP was the only site for that game! I saw faarcyde doing a well on 2+2 a ways back and he basically said "yah, people weren't calling enough". Goddamnit. 1% difference in ROI would have been a lot.

Definitely got disenchanted with poker after that, although I do still play when I go to vegas. The limits are about to be raised here in colorado so we won't have that weird 100 max bet game anymore, will have to see if more people are playing and if they can get any 2-5 going finally. I do have a lot of experience playing blackjack, I made a thread about that. Also have a good chunk on predictit that I've grown over the years. But I moved most of my high stakes betting to selling options now.....

Hello. I only lurked PITR back in the day but I loved it.

I’m the pool goon who had ask/tell me threads that were pretty popular. Now a days I only play poker and do really bad at gambling on sports. I use to bet MMA a lot too. For the longest time I believed there was no edge at all unless you had inside info. Starting to think that options markets are slow to fully react, especially in less liquid equities. And people overvalue risk reduction. We know that's human nature from playing so much poker, seems like it might be relevant in derivatives as well. My sample size is way too small of course.

This is really cool that it's back, and seeing some of these names again. Poker was a big part of my 20s and it's all thanks to PITR and IRC. My first real roll came from running deep in the GSOP rebuy. I haven't played much at all since Black Friday, but I did take down a live $100 rebuy charity tournament somewhat recently. I do sometimes wonder about getting back into online to fill some downtime while working from home, but I'm also bad at poker these days and don't have the grind in me.
