For the longest time I believed there was no edge at all unless you had inside info. Starting to think that options markets are slow to fully react, especially in less liquid equities. And people overvalue risk reduction. We know that's human nature from playing so much poker, seems like it might be relevant in derivatives as well. My sample size is way too small of course.

The biggest problem for small-time trading imo is that you need massive amounts of capital to make it worth your time. If you were able to consistently make 20% a year you'd be the best trader to ever live, and you'd only make 100k/yr with a 500k bankroll.

Also, for what it's worth I trade commodities and I think a big part of the reason there's an edge is that there are market participants like utilities who have to make -EV trades for size because of regulatory requirements. If you're trading options I think you're mostly banking on retail traders getting themselves worked up enough to distort the market.

this was the official announcement (requires archives).

Beyond what's in that first post, what I have gathered is that the subforum was closed out of a general admin impetus at that time to cut some fat from the forums, mostly on the basis that it had low traffic but also subsequent to some level of concern (the particulars I'm not familiar with) about some goons sponsoring each other or staking or maybe a misunderstanding of what cake was or whatever. Maybe. That last bit is hearsay, I haven't actually seen posts about it.

Posting traffic had declined precipitously after the so-called infamous Black Friday, when the FBI raided major sites and the feds decided to crack down on online poker. Practically overnight, millions of US poker players found they couldn't fund/withdraw from online poker using their bank, credit card, paypal, etc. and that was sufficient to kill their interest. If you read that above thread, lots of posters thought that traffic was going to return, and there were some signals that legalization was coming too. We know now, 8 years later, that the situation was not fully resolved and it remains a state-by-state question as to how easy it is to play poker online.

SA has a different set of admins and mods now, we're going to be proactive about avoiding any potential problems with goons staking or transacting directly on the forums, and we're less concerned about what "low traffic" means for a subforum or whether that's a killer for it. We also want to fold in sports betting/gambling in general, which should hopefully give the forum slightly wider appeal than it had before. I say "we," because I was afforded the opportunity to have some input and there appeared to be a consensus, but I'm not speaking for the admins and other mods here really, this is more of my own assessment. I feel pretty good about the outcome right now and I think PitR can expect to be treated fairly.

Hey there, I'm one of the admins that was part of all that and kinda grabbed poo poo by the tail once we decided to repopen it (as Leper is well aware of, this is addressed to all of you in general not him obviously) and this is pretty much spot on.

Also all of you who are happy this place is back again should give Leperfish a big thanks and a slap on the back because he's 100% the reason this ball got rolling and was your biggest advocate from day one once he gave it that push. I kind of took over on the admin side but this was his project from jump and forumID 139 would still be a sad, empty, abandoned ghost town along with all the forgotten RSFs if it wasn't for him.

Just one more thing!
Holy poo poo this forum's back. I haven't played poker in probably at least 5 years and then it was just jumping through hoops to put a little bit of money on some random site for old times' sake. I got pretty into video game randomizers because by their nature they let me scratch that gambling itch even though no money is on the line. While I feel like I could probably do a really in-depth write up about decision making processes and competitive metas I don't personally feel that it would be a good fit for this forum.

Just thought it was cool to see this here, wanted to say hi.

I'm Scotsman. I was the mod of PITR soon after its inception up until it randomly got closed one day. It is what it is.

I only play poker on a casual basis these days however I owe a lot to my time running PITR and playing poker for a living as it helped me understand the analytical thinking behind gambling that much more. I'm big into sports betting now, running various betting tips websites and betting sports practically professionally. (It's not my primary job but it may as well be)

So with us looking to make this a more of a gambling talking forum, I'm cool with chiming in and talking about it. I've also got a lot of experience in building communities etc so looking forward to hopefully getting PITR thriving again.

Anyway great to be here and I'll look to create some new threads to get some discussion going over the next few days.

I'd be interested in a general sports betting FAQ type post, still a bit of a mystery to me (ie what data are you using, how much weight do you give certain data points, is it more about arbitrages between different books etc...)

Aww. Thanks, Cy. :glomp:

I was never a hardcore PitR regular and I've never played for money outside a couple of home games; but I was really interested, read some books, watched poker on TV, and I thought the folks in PitR back in the day were very cool people to hang out with and chat about poker and poo poo. I'm glad I got to be part of restoring it.

I don't wanna let you overstate it though; as soon as I posted "hey can we re-open PitR maybe?" in the mod forum, there was an immediate and positive response. This is a really good admin and mod crew and I don't recall anyone being against it really. From Jefferey, yourself & the other admins, positive notes and suggestions from other mods, and the willingness of several PitR people to step up and be IKs and mods of a new forum, this was a team effort and I'm proud of all of us for making it happen.

I don’t want to speak for either forum but my guess would be both. Different communities end up with different focuses on the same topic end it’s possible to have two threads.

For example: both TGR and TGO have hunting threads. One skews a little more “gun people who use some of their guns to hunt” and the other skews a little more “outdoorsy types who do some hunting while they’re out and about.”

I actively trade equities and there is potential to make money consistently, the chatter that you can't day/swing trade profitably is not true at all even if you only have the pattern day trade amount minimum in the US for intraday trading. It's just crazy loving hard.

The learning curve and emotional/dollar swings make poker look like tee ball vs the majors, at least in my experience. I'm new to the game and have been profitable and found what works (I didnt buy the March dip and hold, I would be better off or more delusional about my skills if I did) but still get my rear end kicked learning new timeframes/strategies/etc.

Whatever you do START SMALL. There's no way to know what's coming for you trading until you're in the churn having the market eat your lunch. Also after months of day trading poker will move at a glacial pace, which is kind of nice for decision making

Xyven is right on the retail side working themselves up, you're doing a lot of watching for trends and inflection points for, often times, the stupidest possible chain of events to occur (see KODK last summer on gov loan news or UONE/UONEK during black business week). The moment you get sucked in to the crowd versus operating independent to move in and out you're in a bad way

I can't say I don't miss being able to play poker and donate money to random GSOPs. After black friday it became ridiculously difficult to put money in any sites and once you did the competition wasn't nearly as soft since the only people willing to put in the effort were the people who had half a clue on how to play. I'd imagine overall the competition's probably alot tougher nowadays since the poker boom's died out. Probably good for my wallet since I was really only good enough to beat absolutely clueless people.

Does anyone play from any of the states that have legalized online poker, but quarantined from the rest of the world? How active/soft is the online poker there when compared to the rest of the world?
