Oh hell yeah, there's a craps thread! I've been a table games dealer for almost four years now, dealt craps for the last two. That essentially makes me a newbie in terms of craps dealers, but I deal it two or three nights a week and would be happy to answer any questions people might have from that perspective.

It's definitely the most difficult game to learn to deal - there's a bunch of math, there's a whole bunch of things you need to keep track of at the same time, and players routinely throw chips and shout bets at you at the same time ( "6 dollar three-way red, 4 dollar horn, hop the hard ways, heavy 8" while throwing you three red chips) regardless of the order you're trying to do things in. That said, it's also (usually) a lot of fun to deal - I go into every night at work hoping I'll be put on the dice crew,. because there's no funner place to be in the casino than a hot craps table.

Do people still have a lady blow on the dice for luck, like they do in old movies?

This drives me crazy when I see it in movies!

1. Shooter has to keep the dice in one hand, over the table
2. The stickperson's sole job when the dice are out is to keep eyes on the dice at all times
3. If either of these conditions are broken, the stickperson takes the dice back and the floor has to double-check to make sure they haven't been switched

I've seen players pull down their mask to try and blow on the dice which is even dumber :argh:

I was coming back to the thread to say how much I love iron cross. As mentioned in the OP, David's videos are great for teaching you the game.

I don't understand how people like Iron Cross because I never see people win with it, ever. Yeah you sorta-kinda make money on every non-seven roll but it's never enough to get ahead of how bad a seven-out wrecks you.

quote:

The fact that almost 50% of the playing space is occupied by casino employees when there's like 4 people at the table is wild. Even the times when I'm the only person there, there's still 2 employees.

When COVID hit, our craps table changed to "inside stick" where instead of a stickperson, the dealer on the side the dice land on is in charge of the stick. It's kind of annoying but also kind of fun to have to send the dice across the table through a minefield of hard ways and hop bets.

But yeah, staffing for craps is definitely a factor; it requires at least 2 (usually 3) people to run a game, and it's the last game most dealers learn (if they choose to at all; many don't because it's much harder work for not really much more pay).

The short answer is yes. Craps is one of the few games that allows a 'no house edge bet' in all forms of the game you'll find.

It's amazing how often people come to the table and say "I heard craps has the best odds in the house?" and then dump their money on prop bets (pretty much all of which are really bad) or the Field :eng99:

Whats Iron Cross? I don't know craps very well is it a Martingale type thing?

e: This might be helpful I guess https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martingale_(betting_system)

Generally speaking, it’s betting on 5/6/8 and then betting on the field every throw. So if you have, say, $10 on 5 and $12 on 6/8, you make a $10 field bet for every throw and:

2/12: win $20 (1 in 18 chance)
3/4/9/10/11: win $10 (7 in 18 chance)
5/6/8: win $4 (7 in 18 chance)
7: lose $44 (3 in 18 chance)

So it feels good because you win money on a majority of rolls, but it’s really hard to cover the ground lost when you seven-out.

I enjoy how you called out something as pseudoscience after listing a bunch of superstitions

Craps players are the single most superstitious group of people I've ever seen in my life and it's not even close.

Nothing like tapping into a game on stick, calling a 7-out, and having everyone genuinely believe it's your fault!

I googled the max players at a craps table and it sounds like it can actually be up to 14, and there’s a dealer on both halves of the symmetrical table to handle the betting and payouts. The house will have a massive stack of chips in the middle to handle payouts. I believe the dealers mentally take a note of where they place each persons chips. Like if you put money on a 8 and 3 other people also have, they arrange each bet around the border of the 8 box so that each bet kinda corresponds to where each better is standing at the table to make it easier. Basically the dealers are so familiar with the game it must just be second nature.

Yeah, bort got it right that when dealers place bets, we put them in a place that corresponds to where you’re standing. And you got it right that it takes a really long time dealing the game before it feels comfortable, especially with prop bets where you just kinda have to remember who bet what with each roll.

Also also, I can’t speak for other places but my house is down to three players per side because COVID, which sadly I agree with because while a full table rules, it’s also probably really unsafe right now

Speaking of, will there ever be $5 tables ever again? Since April, I felt the amount of $5 tables in at least California and Vegas have just hit zero or something.

Our casino doubled the minimums from 5 to 10 when we reopened from quarantine since our table sizes were effectively halved - my guess is that once COVID isn’t a factor that limits will drop again?

Has anyone witnessed any crazy cheating schemes? I imagine the dealers are on top of that

We have players who are notorious shot takers, which is the dealing term for doing stuff that sets them up to take advantage of weaker dealers. Stuff like trying to bet when the dice are in the air (not allowed), making purposely convoluted bets in the hopes that we math error, constantly betting different prop bets so they can claim they bet something they didn’t if a number comes up.

Most players, it’s innocuous, but there are some players who we all know to look out for because it’s clear that’s their game. It’s annoying.

I don't think I've seen a $5 live craps table post pandemic

I’m a dealer in western OR and we have it :rolldice: Our limits went to up $10 for the first year we were open post quarantine since we capped play at 3 players per side, but now we’re back to capacity (I guess the pandemic is over now? :eng99:) and back down to $5 (with 5x max odds).

I was at the Odawa casino in Petoskey, Michigan. Something I've never seen before: no charge for a Buy bet on the 4/10. No dollar up-front, no dollar on the win. Just becomes a Buy at $20.

I've never heard of this but I'm curious if there's something you're missing because I can't imagine a casino offering a bet with no house edge (pays 2:1 with 3 ways to win and 6 ways to lose).

gently caress yeah though, I'd play it if I ever saw it.

Why?!? Why do people make bets like “5 dollar horn 3 dollar hi lo yo 2 dollar C&E”? They all cover the same numbers, just pick a lane!!

do you like it when people ask the dealers to let field bet tips ride, y/n

I can't speak for other dealers but I'm personally into it - my whole career strategy is "Don't Burn Out", and I wouldn't have gotten into this if I didn't enjoy gambling on some level, and having action in play (ie I can win money, but don't lose any if I don't win my bet) makes the night fun. I count any tip (including bets that I don't win) a good tip.

If I were to name one pet peeve, it's when players tip other players instead of the dealers, especially on a hot roll (where the shooter is already up hundreds or thousands of dollars) - that sometimes feels like an unintentional slap in the face to the people actually doing work. Note: if the dealers are getting the love too this doesn't bother me at all, it only bothers me when it's a snub.

But I don't let that stuff bother me once I hit my break because Don't Burn Out - at the end of the day I basically play games for a living and it's a pretty nice life.
