I'd like to use my first post in the Craps thread to complain about how it is represented in media

At a high level, any number rolled on the dice at a Craps table could win or lose you money, depending on the phase of the game, and what you bet on. That's actually one of the beautiful things about this game in my opinion. But outside of a come-out roll (or some 'don't pass' betting which isn't the norm even if it has fractions of a % better odds..), sevens are bad. To the point where people act like you just wished death on their mother just because you said the word 'seven' in the vicinity of a craps table.

But watch any music video, movie, tv show and there will be someone throwing a 7 to an uproarious cheer. It bugs me. Are all of these people betting $100 on the pass line with no odds behind?

The short answer is yes. Craps is one of the few games that allows a 'no house edge bet' in all forms of the game you'll find.

I feel like its less the odds bet (there are plenty of people betting on all sorts of poo poo with an atrocious house edge at a craps table) and more the sheer number of people it takes to deal a craps table (and from the outside, it seems like it requires more skill/math/awareness than dealing blackjack or roulette, etc)

lmao i have the exact same feelings about that machine. best place to learn craps and still decent for experienced players who don't necessarily care for table dynamics

My problem with the machines (besides the lack of being able to actually throw the dice which is a given) is that they usually have a shittier odds multiplier than the tables in the same casino itself. I'm sure that's configurable by the operator but I find it really really tedious to play craps with anything less than 3x 4x 5x odds.

I mean, I honestly don't care if someone is playing don't pass or not, it's just less fun. It's the same reason I'll make some place bets or hardways even though the odds are worse. I'd rather maximize the fun than maximize the odds. If I wanted to maximize the odds I'd stay home.

This is basically my logic. I will play the hell out of the Don't if I'm at a bubble craps machine though, and sip on my drink while commiserating with them when another 7 out is rolled

Does anyone ever set up informal, low stakes games with friends? We are getting older so its rare these days but once a year or so if we have a rowdy house party going on, we will set up a game.

We keep it super simple, first roll same as a casino, set the point, and then roll till its hit or a bust. And then to keep the game moving and action involved, we mandate any bet has to be matched, so if I put $2 on the shooter, the group needs to pony up $2 total. Keeps more people invested and hooting and hollering as they root for/against the shooter over relatively low stakes. Also super easy to get partners and other less rowdy people to have a few rolls as the shooter.

When we were teenagers, we used to gamble by rotating which friend in the group got to be the 'house' that night -- we'd play blackjack, craps, whatever and yes the house usually won. We probably bet more than we should have at that age, but money passed around and debts were sacred in my friend group and there was never any fights over honoring them. Often they were just rotating "person X owes person Y $Z" balances in a notebook that were claimed :20bux: or a pizza at a time. All was well.

Then one night the kid (who probably could least afford it) dealt craps and the players had a hot night and got up literally thousands of dollars on him, at a time when we were all working stuff like $6/hr grocery and fast food jobs in high school. It was super awkward and we just sort of changed the subject and started playing Mario Kart 64 and never really spoke of it or gambled in that way again.

We're all still buddies to this day.

e: The fondest degenerate gambling moments in that friend group were betting on CPU vs CPU games of NES Tecmo Super Bowl. You could set both teams and it would sim out a football game (with ridiculous NES dice roll/RNG playcalling and fumbling). I still miss swearing at a 13" TV because QB Eagles made threw an interception and cost me 5 dollars.

I like to play continuous comes with full odds but it’s swingy as all gently caress. Nothing like getting 6 come bets out there loaded up with no repeats then the 7 coming.

You’re king of the world when there is a moderately hot roll tho

It’s weird because I’ll turn off my brain and buy in on some of the craps superstitions (don’t speak of 7, definitely don’t get your hands in the way) but others I could care less.

When the dice go on the floor I actually tend to bet more money, and I could give a poo poo if it’s “same dice” when I myself toss one out.

Also I’m fine with dice setters and have my own superstitions about how I want them oriented when I toss em, but hurry the gently caress up!

I hate the people that spend two minutes orienting them and eyeballing it like they are making a PGA Tour putt, just toss that poo poo.

You should be able to orient and toss the dice within 5 seconds of getting them pushed to your hand

There is some stuff the casino can do to tweak the odds in Craps that you can look for.

The big one is Pass Line odds, but it only affects you if take advantage of them. Odds are a true-even bet, 0% house edge, imagine betting on a coin flip and getting exactly double your money any time you are right. You could flip a million times and would be expected to lose $0. That's why they make you play the Pass Line to take advantage of them. The larger the odds multiplier the better (so long as you can afford it).

So a table that allows 2X odds on all numbers is is worse than the Vegas Strip standard (5X on a point of 6/8, 4X on 5/9, 3X on 4/10), which itself is worse than some places that allow 5x, 10x, 20x etc.

There have been gimmick tables in the past that have something like a $5 min Pass Line bet and 100x odds, which is amazing value for a casino, but it only really effects you if you can bet $505 without sweating it.

Some more off the top of my head:
-Changing the payouts on hardways (X FOR 1) is different than (X TO 1)
-previously discussed stuff about when vig is paid on a Buy bet
-Paying triple on both, either, or none of the 2/12 in the Field bet
