Fall Haven. Population 7 Million souls, give or take. Walls went up after the Second Conflict and the place has been shut tight as a drum ever since. Paradise on earth, a garden party locked off from the hell outside. A sweet gig, if you can get in. Most can't. If you can't keep up in the Haven, you ‘Fall’ out - and with a five kilometer exclusion zone outside the walls, if you’re out you’re WAY out. So yeah, bourgeoisie heaven for the rich or lucky…

Until 0600 hours, when an MCS touched down in Brooks District and immediately started consuming all nearby matter and converting it into Puppets. Initial death toll 564 and climbing, with rate of climb increasing geometrically as more is converted. In the interest of preventing further death and property damage, Fall Haven Central Command has signed off on scrambling Crazy Eight.

May God have mercy on our souls.
    ◇◇◇
Far above Fall Haven - but approaching rapidly - the Ballistic Insertion Pods carried the dormant bodies of the Crazy Eight squadron down towards the theatre of operations. Human, nominally, but filled to the brim with fantastically deadly apparatus. Bodies inert, but minds linked in an Octal Bridge, the combat network that linked them out in the field. A pure place, cleaner than this filthy world. They fell, and waited, until…

<Ladies and gentlemen, we have MCS deployment in a population centre in contravention of UCA Provision 12. They waited two hours to call us. Idiots. Local law enforcement response triggered defense instantiation - looking at 2-4 novel instances, likely to bootstrap up to ten or so by the time we wrap this up.>

<Remember, the procedure here is the same. Clean up the area, wipe the Core, tidy whatever’s left. You haven’t the luxury of worrying about collateral damage. Whatever the city officials say, whatever LE tells you on the ground, our Provision 12 Response Guidelines outstrip their authority. Play along if you want or blow them away if they try to stop you, whatever. Touchdown in four minutes. Engage your systems.>

Crazy Eight are go.

Welcome to Crazy Eight, a short tactical game inspired by Cyberpunk, Ghost in the Shell and all kinds of TRPGs. Players (eight of them, surprise) take the role of members of the Crazy Eight, a high level cyborg PMC called in when things get really tricky. They are tough and aloof and beyond puny things called laws and morals - all that matters is the mission. Or, you know, maybe not; that's up to you!

Either way, you need to pick an eight character name (no more or less), one melee weapon, one ranged weapon, and two Octal Nodes worth of upgrades. What the gently caress are those? Well, check the Archive in the next post!

OCTAL NODES - The Crazy Eight are heavily cyberized, with little remaining of their original bodies. Rendered faster and stronger than any human (and even most cyborgs) their prosthetics are riddled with sophisticated tech known only as Octal Nodes. Military-grade and proprietary, the Nodes react to combat environments by generating a wide variety of effects far beyond the capabilities of lesser warriors. Enhanced speed and reflexes, micromissiles and information warfare, the ONs grant the Crazy Eight a cutting edge advantage in urban combat. Select two from the list below.

Properly starting this on Monday, but pick where you're going to land. No actions yet, but here's a few rules just to acclimatize yourselves.
  • You all have 16 HP. Healing is hard to come by (need Combat Data as mentioned earlier in most cases), but it's hard to put you guys down for good. More on that later.
  • You all have 8 Move by default, though Linear Booster increases that dramatically.
  • Both you and enemies roll for damage, not to hit - if an enemy is in range, you hit them for whatever you roll. You won't (at first) know what their stats are, but through combat you'll learn their details.
  • In general, players act first, then baddies, then environmental effects. So you move and attack, they move and attack, then other stuff happens. 'Other stuff' includes stuff like cars blowing up, artillery fire, and other stuff you'll find out later.
  • Talking is a free action, so feel free to chew out these piddly police officers for failing to contain the threat.

The Crazy Eight squadron had ultimately been deployed to the city of Fall Haven, so proper optix were in effect.

The towering cyborg Telethon - member #2 of the Crazy Eight squadron - felt his sensor arrays reach their peak capacity as they arrived at the cordoned-off city intersection. A low-grade whine could be felt coming from underfoot, signals and vibrations from various wires and pipelines underground. This was the expected ambient activity standard to the population centers of olden times, and yet...

"Hmzzzt..." Telethon buzzed. "Tezzting, One, Two... two too to tew tiew thew tooth ew. There. Vocal interface quirks disezztablished... or not."

The lightweight, long-limbed cyborg warrior Telethon stomped across the asphalt towards the nearest officer. Like it or not, Telethon sometimes felt like he had to act as the face for the team - he was #2, after all.

"We've arrived at Brookzz District." Telethon announced what was obvious in meatvox to the peacekeeping officer standing nervously at attention. "We hear you have a Mil-Con Szzwarm problem. How many Puppetzz you eztimate are down thiz sztreet? What'zz the current containment rate? Any friendliez or injured we szhould be aware of, hmmzt?"

When the simple grunt had stammered out their best answers to his questions, Telethon leaned fractionally closer and hummed out a partially synthesized whisper just for the officer to hear.

"Friendly advizze: zztay out of the Eight'z way and evacuate the citizenzzz insztead of blocking the sztreetz..."

Deploying to I5

As one the only Crazy Eight to still have visible facial features, Princess was also the only one who had to try to not visibly show her contempt for the law enforcers. She didn't try very hard.

Equipment check:
Stunner? Yeah, that probably still works.
Boltcaster? As fun as it'd be to test its functionality out on a cop car, she's certain it works fine.
Reactive panels? They had better work properly this time.
Semtex Hive? Drones were functional, but still dull-looking. Yes, they were basically grenades that can move on their own, but that didn't mean they couldn't have at least been painted.
Equipment check complete: good enough

Princess could try to talk to the cops, see if they even had any idea where the MCS were...or, she could try to get someone else to act as the face for once.

Immediately after the smoke of your landing clears, FHPD is on your rear end. They start shouting, blaring sirens from their shoulder mounted rigs, demanding you evacuate the scene. These men and women are upset that you are here, but mostly they are afraid. They are afraid of this strange greasy smoke rising from the east, of the flashes of light and hints of directed motion within it. They are afraid of the sounds they can hear, and the sounds they cannot hear, from the distance. They are afraid of you. After a tense standoff, one of them speaks to FEARSOME.

"Activity, uh sir? Lots of people running away, talking about bugs or aliens or robots. We saw a few in the distance - they're just these little things, no bigger than dogs. Honestly, we don't need you gu-"
<Tentative Puppet Contact. Scraped footage from CCTV (before FullBlack) reveals first novel MCS-Puppet. TacMoniker: P1-Rat. Likely to be a scout unit, one of the first created per standard MCS protocol. Expect high numbers, low quality. Each feeds data to the central core, each a point of data reinforcing the MCS' hold on the area. Investigate with extreme prejudice.>

FHPD continues to blabber, but immediately your TacNet lights up with a positive ID on P1-Rat. The police begin to react, painfully slowly, but you are fully engaged in analysis. Three emerge from FullBlack and... begin to violently assault nearby objects and buildings with a flurry of slicing blades. It seems wanton, but to your augmented eyes it is more. They are sectioning the matter into tiny pieces, consuming it. For storage, analysis? Impossible to tell... without first taking them apart. You consult your tactical aerial data.

The FullBlack covers most of the operation theatre. Military Construction Swarms, as one of their first orders of business, pump out enormous clouds of micro-drones that destroy all landline and wireless networks in the area. All communication, all camera networks, fall either under their control or into dissolution. The clouds obscure outside satellite observation... but you have other ways. Prior to touchdown, your BIPs fired off a broadspectrum sensor flash with enough power to penetrate the cloud, fast enough to avoid countermeasures. In that brief moment, the collected data provided nearly two dozen Points of Interest... then FullBlack, once more. No way to learn more without diving in.

GM posted:

  • Yeah, you're going in blind here. But it's not all bad - at the end of your move, you'll do a scan around you up to your Ranged Weapon Range, clearing fog up in your line of sight. Once it's cleared, its clear. But until then, you're vulnerable to ambushes out in the FullBlack - tread carefully.
  • You'll gain more information about Puppets as you see them in action and/or kill them, eventually filling out their card. Once a card is filled, deal 1 extra damage to them - you keep track of that, because .
  • Points Of Interest may vanish during gameplay. There's stuff happening behind the FullBlack... and you may not have gotten there in time.

A trio of MilCon Swarm P1-Rats appeared at the edges of the avenues' FullBlack zones, darting down the cluttered streets and slicing into various vehicles and structures for raw material and sample data.

While this was going on behind the local law enforcement's backs, the field officers weren't even finished filling the Eight in on the situation. The Crazy Eight watched in stony silence as the police units jabbered and milled about unhelpfully. They were probably just relieved that the Eight had showed up. They had no idea...

Telethon tapped into the Eight's TacNet, where he and his teammates telecommunicated everything they needed to in order to succeed.

>>> Bogeys in the immediate and not a single LEO shot fired. Let's put an end to this amateur hour. Arms up.

The hulking cyborg spoke to the lightly-armored police officer that had gotten inside his personal space.

"Hmmzzt." Telethon buzzed, his arms folded, and then he poked an accusatory finger against the police-issue chestplate. "Szee, thizz izz exzactly what we meant when we szsaid, 'zztay out of the Eight'z way'..."

The long-limbed humanoid machine Telethon quickly backpedaled away from the fragile person and powered on his own weapon systems. He glanced both ways like a quarterback looking for his pass recipient and shouted.

"We've got INCOMING!" Telethon announced, for his allies' sake but also to alert the inattentive cops to the fact that combat was truly starting.

Telethon lined himself up along the lane of the cleared sidewalk and spotted one of the P1-Rats in his sights. It was in the middle of hacking into the rear of a freight truck, possibly looking for somewhere to hide. It would have to be stopped.

As soon as he saw the enemy data cache appear on the Crazy Eight's tacNet, Telethon was all over it with his proprietizing digi-mitts.

TacNet:
>>> Yoink~! Gonna need thiss'un for my telemagic strategeries. Willing to sit out the upgrade line for more than a cycle...

But wait - it looked like someone else had a claim to its use: Hammerer-08.

TacNet:
>>> Ah, heck - go for it, Hammerdin. I'll peep the squats.

> Move: D9 -> D12 (W3).
> Point of Interest (C13): Access, rescue, and scrape info for +1 Combat Data (earmarked for Telethon-02).

Telethon ambled inside the building, looking for survivors.

Finally, a hit. A secure enclosure, containing seven survivors. Wounded, some badly. After determining their status, you strip them of their cellphones and assorted terminals and direct them towards safety. It takes a few moments, but OCT0-OCT0 manages to scrape everything relevant from footage and messages; P1-Rat and P2-Dove are simple Puppets, as expected. Their targeting and motion parameters are extremely limited, and can be ‘tricked’ fairly easily. [+1 Combat Data]

<Excellent work ladies and gents, you made these Puppets look like a bunch of goons. And, naturally, you made the cops look like… well, let’s leave them be. Now look alive - we’ve got some artillery fire inbound. The next phase of MCS progression after reconnaissance is crushing the area into base components for future use. Try not to be in said area.

Furthermore, tentative Puppet Contact by Unit 4. Fast, melee unit. Looks like they hunt in packs - this is the first actual resistance you guys are likely to face. Keep your distance, avoid those teeth. TacMoniker P3-WOLF.

princess: fuuuuuuck, when did Hammerer get so good at this
princess: fine, you're definitely not going to have to act as the nice one this mission
princess: actually, I'm going to send that to Octo-Octo, I'm sure they'll love it

Princess was suddenly interrupted by one of the cops, asking her if she thought they could actually stop the MCS's. That took her a moment to process. When she realized the idiot was being completely sincere, she turned towards the officer with her arms outstretched, showing off her heavily augmented body. "How many of those MCS's did you just watch us paste? How many did you even get a chance to shoot at? We're not going to stop the MCS, we're going to crush them, you-"
[Data Transmitting, please wait...]
"...look, just let us do what we do best. And pay attention to your ARsystem alerts, and take a step back from the artillery zone that is almost right on top of you."
