The Crazy Eight squadron had ultimately been deployed to the city of Fall Haven, so proper optix were in effect.

The towering cyborg Telethon - member #2 of the Crazy Eight squadron - felt his sensor arrays reach their peak capacity as they arrived at the cordoned-off city intersection. A low-grade whine could be felt coming from underfoot, signals and vibrations from various wires and pipelines underground. This was the expected ambient activity standard to the population centers of olden times, and yet...

"Hmzzzt..." Telethon buzzed. "Tezzting, One, Two... two too to tew tiew thew tooth ew. There. Vocal interface quirks disezztablished... or not."

The lightweight, long-limbed cyborg warrior Telethon stomped across the asphalt towards the nearest officer. Like it or not, Telethon sometimes felt like he had to act as the face for the team - he was #2, after all.

"We've arrived at Brookzz District." Telethon announced what was obvious in meatvox to the peacekeeping officer standing nervously at attention. "We hear you have a Mil-Con Szzwarm problem. How many Puppetzz you eztimate are down thiz sztreet? What'zz the current containment rate? Any friendliez or injured we szhould be aware of, hmmzt?"

When the simple grunt had stammered out their best answers to his questions, Telethon leaned fractionally closer and hummed out a partially synthesized whisper just for the officer to hear.

"Friendly advizze: zztay out of the Eight'z way and evacuate the citizenzzz insztead of blocking the sztreetz..."

A trio of MilCon Swarm P1-Rats appeared at the edges of the avenues' FullBlack zones, darting down the cluttered streets and slicing into various vehicles and structures for raw material and sample data.

While this was going on behind the local law enforcement's backs, the field officers weren't even finished filling the Eight in on the situation. The Crazy Eight watched in stony silence as the police units jabbered and milled about unhelpfully. They were probably just relieved that the Eight had showed up. They had no idea...

Telethon tapped into the Eight's TacNet, where he and his teammates telecommunicated everything they needed to in order to succeed.

>>> Bogeys in the immediate and not a single LEO shot fired. Let's put an end to this amateur hour. Arms up.

The hulking cyborg spoke to the lightly-armored police officer that had gotten inside his personal space.

"Hmmzzt." Telethon buzzed, his arms folded, and then he poked an accusatory finger against the police-issue chestplate. "Szee, thizz izz exzactly what we meant when we szsaid, 'zztay out of the Eight'z way'..."

The long-limbed humanoid machine Telethon quickly backpedaled away from the fragile person and powered on his own weapon systems. He glanced both ways like a quarterback looking for his pass recipient and shouted.

"We've got INCOMING!" Telethon announced, for his allies' sake but also to alert the inattentive cops to the fact that combat was truly starting.

Telethon lined himself up along the lane of the cleared sidewalk and spotted one of the P1-Rats in his sights. It was in the middle of hacking into the rear of a freight truck, possibly looking for somewhere to hide. It would have to be stopped.

As soon as he saw the enemy data cache appear on the Crazy Eight's tacNet, Telethon was all over it with his proprietizing digi-mitts.

TacNet:
>>> Yoink~! Gonna need thiss'un for my telemagic strategeries. Willing to sit out the upgrade line for more than a cycle...

But wait - it looked like someone else had a claim to its use: Hammerer-08.

TELETHON-02 emerged from the doomed building, kicking the front doors off their hinges as his arms were full from carrying the wounded. The hulking cyborg directed the able-bodied survivors to walk towards the safety of the police line to the west and he set the two injured adults he'd been carrying down from his shoulders and onto clean concrete where they could easily be spotted and retrieved by law enforcement officers.

"You are lucky to be alive today." Telethon reminded the two injured adults. "Your ssszurvival is mozt important. Szsafety is on the way."

Telethon turned away from the soft-skinned, fragile-boned humans and conferred with OCT0-OCT0. The data he'd gathered from the survivors' terminals was being crystallized into an Octal Node for Telethon's own personal use.

tacNET:
>>> OCT0-OCT0's given me the hookup from the scraped civvie deets. Your locally-broadcast TELETHON in now on-air.

> TELETHON-02 consumes Combat Data and gains a new Octal Node: Kinetic Matrix!

The telekinetic field amplifiers around Telethon's zones of control suddenly sparked to life in the cyborg's monitors.

"Ahhh~!" Telethon sighed with a digitized buzz. "Muzch better!"

He lifted both metal-clad arms and, like the conductor of an orchestra, began waving his arms and causing reality to shift to his will.

"Ah - whoopzz!" Telethon emitted. "Lookz like you're a tad expozzed, Hammerkin."

Telethon made a simple-yet-forceful beckoning gesture with his hands, and HAMMERER-08 and his nanite-smearing octal node were gently dragged a little closer to his position.

PASSWORD-05 felt their mechanized body lurch forward, driven onward by outside signals.

tacNet (from TELETHON-02):

Using gentle control schema, Telethon engaged Password's comprehensive combat instincts to help him aim his long gun.

There had been several important updates in local data based on what Points of Interest the other Crazies were currently investigating, but TELETHON-02 resumed concentrating on protecting his own teammates from the onslaught of incoming Puppets.

tacNET:
>>> Ugh. Probs frag'nados, from the looks of 'em. Smeardrive that Wolf on over here, HAMMERER-08, and I'll knock the block off that Pinecone that'll be to your rear.

The similarly-armed cyborgs Telethon-02 and Hammerer-08 lined themselves up for a complicated combo charge formation against the inbound Puppets. Hammerer took off first, trailing a smear of combat nanites behind him, and Telethon dashed after him, unharmed by his ally's blade-forming nanites - they would have to time this maneuver right...

Hammerer suddenly juked around the P3-Wolf and slammed his driver into the Puppet's back, sending it skidding through the enemy-shredding Nanite Smears in Telethon's direction. Telethon leapt over the dying Wolf and arced a long-limbed concussive punch with his Driver over Hammerer's shoulder and into the body of the P4-Pinecone that had rolled up behind Hammerer's back. The explosive pod was promptly knocked back from the Driver's momentous force, with the intention of putting both the cyborgs out of the remote bomb's threat range.

Looking to the north, Telethon saw a second Pinecone nearby and on the approach, and he gave both the Puppet and his ally Hammerer a little telekinetic shove in that direction to free up some personal space.

tacNET:

TELETHON-02's soundboard made a clicking noise in irritation. Some bird-shaped Puppet just barely within their scan range was hurting both him and the wounded HAMMERER-08 from afar with railgun-like fire, and the sudden onslaught of even more mobile Puppets convening on their position was disquieting.

tacNet:
>>> Gag. No other way around it: we took a beating gambling on those P4-Pinecones' reaction speed. Gotta recuperate.
>>> Gonna hide behind some Nano-Smears and stay out of that P6-Stork's sights. It did something nasty to my systems from halfway down the block!
>>> Errrrrr... before I duck and cover, is someone willing to take a gamble on this POI before it gets overrun? I've got the touch.

With telekinetically-assisted force, Telethon launched PASSW0RD-05 to the side door of the flagged tanker truck cab in a blinding flash of cyborg movement.

In a blur of limbs Telethon was off, running after a P3-Wolf that had popped out of an alley in the south lane.

TELETHON-02's cybernetic transceivers were on full tactical alert. The data was flowing in, and matters were getting rather urgent around the streets' biggest and most-exposed population center. They were slowly and steadily getting surrounded by Puppets down both north and south roads. Junkyard-03 had disappeared in a building on the north side and hadn't yet returned, though his lifesigns showed him as anything but dead. Without his backup, however, Hammerer-08 could only stem the flow of Puppets in the north lane for so long...

Three explosive impacts struck all around the civilians that the Crazy Eight were attempting to defend, and pairs of P2-Doves and P3-Wolves emerged from the burning craters.

"Hmmzzt," Telethon buzzed from his sound board, then shrugged with a bit of a wry smirk on what passed for his lips. "Youuzzze it or louzzzze it!"

TELETHON-02 wound down to cool off after blending the Dove-Puppets into a fine nano-paste. He checked the local map and clicked his transceiver in irritation.

tacNet:
>>> Ah - chitty-chitty bang-bang, we lost a POI to the malefactors. Gonna investigate it all personal-like.

Telethon juked back and forth to get a read on the alleyway looming ahead and entered it. He sent off a quick tacNet signal to the other Crazy Eight.

tacNet:

The chatter suddenly went silent over the tacNet when JUNKYARD-03 was hoisted bodily over the north Gorilla's head and flung headlong down the street into a cluster of waiting P2-Doves.

The alert came up: as expected, after getting surrounded Junkyard was down. He'd need assistance getting his parts out of here intact and unincorporated into the Puppet swarm.

Comprehension was dawning on the Crazy Eight that things had gotten serious. TELETHON-02 darted around the corner of a building and dashed down the alleyway to make a mad break for the P6-Stork in between its gatling gun attacks.

The long-limbed cyborg knocked the bird-shaped puppet back and forth before winding up his pent-up momentum into a Driver-powered punch that sent the Stork bowling straight into the P5-Moth that had appeared at the end of the alleyway.
