it deffo gets better after that stage

for me the early years were a long dark slog of depression, and most of the time i never even realized how depressed i was until afterwards. but you do it cuz you love them (hopefully)

now i get to share cool interests with my kids like video games and movies and it's a whole new experience getting to share those things. just recently i started to watch some more "mature" action movies with my kids like pacific rim and we had a blast. over covid they watched me beat most of dark souls 1-3 and made the challenging boss fights much more rewarding when they were there to cheer. :unsmith: of course there are new frustrations at every age and it's never easy.

the cool thing about having a newborn is that you’ll never have to use an alarm to wake up on time ever again, because you will absolutely already be awake

its also weird how your brain gets trained to notice every tiny little odd noise coming from the crib’s general direction, even if you are fast asleep.

the very first time you experience the inevitable ultra limp body “oh god is my baby dead or just asleep” event is extremely terrifying lol

also yeah re: teeth brushing - kids literally don't care about consequences that aren't immediate. if you didn't know that they hadn't been brushed for an entire weekend then you need to start supervising. bribes also work, but they need to be immediate as well. let them stay up past bed time or play a video game a little bit longer if they brush

i had this favorite book called matthew and the midnight tow truck.

no joke, it’s about a kid who wakes up at night and sees a tow truck outside. so he sneaks out without his mom knowing, and the tow truck driver lures the kid inside with toy cars and liquorice. the tow truck driver is smoking in every illustration. they go around town towing people’s cars and shrinking them to toy-size in a magic car wash.

this is the author lol

the box art for snap circuits makes you think it’s gonna be garbage inside, but for the most part the build quality is very good. I think the leads on a couple capacitors or resistors broke at some point so I had to solder on replacements. my kid also burned out all of the LEDs by chaining battery compartments together from multiple sets

he is having a real hard time in the undead parish. the difficulty really amps up compared to the intro area and it feels like there is a long gap between bonfires - you gotta deal with the poison rats, several knight guys, and avoid the armored pig, all before you get to the next bonfire, nevermind the blacksmith to upgrade your weapon.

i told him about being able to shoot off the tail of the dragon and he found the crossbow, but ran out of bolts. he killed the npc that sells them too, lol. sorry bud, no takesies-backsies

lol at the idea of the boomer generation understanding boundaries

my parents will let my kids watch trash on youtube unsupervised for hours despite asking and sometimes even rudely demanding they stop. i mean it could be worse, sure, but it’s infuriating to keep having the same conversations. that said, they are also genuinely helpful in other aspects of being grandparents. oh well

the scammers when trying to sell a car are the worst. I had so many people trying to get me to enter my credit card into some fake rear end website for some kind of report they wanted. when they asked if the car had any issues (completely ignoring the photos and detailed description in the listing itself) I would reply that the rear end had a big hole in it and kindly forwarded them the goat man

a big one I struggle with constantly is just letting them be kids when it’s appropriate. i can be very impatient especially when I’m tired and have sensory issues with noises, so I sometimes bark at them to hurry up or quiet down. I try to mindful of it and make efforts to correct my own behaviour, and apologize when I realize it’s a me problem.
