Welcome to the Superior Interior Thread!

This is the thread for photos of good houses, photos of bad houses, photos of weird houses, talking about good bad and weird houses, nerding out about design and architecture, and Eames Lounge Chairs. I post my "Zillow Search Term of the Day" here (almost) every day wherein I find the most interesting houses for a given keyword or keywords in the popular real estate search engine. Note that I am NOT an expert on interior design, just a weird nerd, so I probably get lots of stuff wrong and actual experts itt are encouraged to chime in.

If you have questions about renovation and what to buy and all that jazz go to the serious Q & A Thread. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3955916

SOME IMPORTANT LINGO (feel free to add your own)

Vernacular vs High-Style "High-style" architecture refers to the designs of architects associated with specific architectural movements such as Gothic Revival, Streamline Moderne, etc. These are often large mansions and were commissioned by very rich people. "Vernacular" architecture is the architecture of the common people. Often it is influenced by the prevailing trends and styles of the day but it is filtered down to something that working-class individuals could afford to build. Examples include the shotgun houses of New Orleans, Craftsman kit houses, Folk Victorian and Carpenter Gothic farmhouses, and the ubiquitous post-war suburban tract houses.
"Mid-Century Modest" the unheralded and disrespected counterpart to the high style Mid Century Moderns. Pink bathrooms, wood panelling, avocado appliances, orange carpet in the basement. Your grandparents' house, probably.
"Brown House" aka Late Century Modern, the kind of rustic contemporary popular from the late 1960s - early 1980s. Also possibly your grandparent's house.
Cheap Victorian in a Dying Midwest Town An often-seen trope in real estate listings - way back in the late 19th century when the midwest was booming a lot of large and elegant houses were built there, and now that the old steel and coal towns are wasting away these sell for the prevailing prices of their area - cheap, cheap, cheap. Can also be found in Dying Upstate New York towns and Dying Appalachian Towns.
Modern Farmhouse Neither modern nor farmhouse, characterized by a monochromatic base with wood accents, gold or black fixtures, use of reclaimed/"shabby chic" materials, words on walls, etc. You know it when you see it.
Words on Walls Signs and decals that say poo poo like "Live Laugh Love", "EAT", "In this house we [wall of text]", "God bless this mess", and tc. Popular with stagers.
Boxhaus Popular kind of "contemporary" house that is cheap to build because it is basically just boxes. Usually with two or three types of siding in front including concrete, corrugated aluminum and orange wood, with generic white/gray/wood interiors.
McMansion Very large houses that had their heyday in the 1990s-early 2000s, a complete mishmash of styles, cheap materials, hideous and difficult to resell. Has been largely supplanted by Boxhauses and "Modern Farmhouse". Kate Wagner of McMansion Hell is the preeminent expert on the subject.
Pop-top Form of flipping popular in growing western cities where vacant land is hard to come by, in which an innocent bungalow or ranch is metastasized into a bigger trendier house that can sell for many times the initial purchase price.
Eames Lounge Chair an important part of every real estate stager's arsenal, can be found in listing photos of all types of houses regardless of how appropriate it is.

DESIGN INFORMATION AND INSPIRATION (again, please add your own)
Zillow https://www.zillow.com/ duh. If you're actually looking to buy a house Realtor.com is the better option, but Zillow's interface makes it better for searching random stuff.
Pinterest https://www.zillow.com/ yes, it's still useful even though it shits up Google Image Search. I have a pinterest where I mostly post floor plans which may or may not be interesting to people https://www.pinterest.com/ediamond61/_saved/
Archive.org https://archive.org/ House plans, architectural details, trade catalogues, you name it, it's here
McMansion Hell http://mcmansionhell.com/ For all your snarking at ugly rich people houses needs, also has some actually informative articles.
Retro Renovation https://retrorenovation.com/ Not just for renovation, lovers of all things Mid-Century Modest will find themselves at home here.
The Wright Library http://www.steinerag.com/flw/index.htm Literally everything you could ever want to know about the influential 20th century architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Except floor plans. For floor plans Visions of Wright is a goldmine https://visionsofwright.wordpress.com/
Old House Dreams https://www.oldhousedreams.com/ If you can't get enough of cool old houses for sale from this thread this site has you covered
Cheap Old Houses https://www.instagram.com/cheapoldhouses/?hl=en If you are broke like me and can't afford most of the houses I post this instagram will fuel your impossible dreams of saving a decrept old bungalow from the developer's axe.
House Hunting https://thehousehuntingblog.com/ she basically does what I do but not by keyword and focuses on a single house in each post.
Planete Deco https://www.planete-deco.fr/ a blog partly in French that mainly posts apartment inspiration. Lots of Scandinavian and Parisian design.
Please Hate These Things https://www.instagram.com/pleasehatethesethings/ Ugly and/or stupid house design decisions.
MidCenturyArc Flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/midcentarc/albums Thousands upon thousands of MCM-related catalog and periodical scans for your enjoyment.
The Craftsman Magazine https://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/DLDecArts/DLDecArts-idx?type=browse&scope=DLDecArts.HomeDesign One day I will make a real effortpost about this. "Craftsman" architecture originated out of the Arts & Crafts movement of the early 20th century, which in America was principally promoted by Gustav Stickley. Stickley and his comrades published The Craftsman monthly from 1901-1916. It contained a wealth of information, opinions, patterns, pictures and actual building plans representing their design philosophy. And socialism. Did I mention the socialism?

Please follow all forum rules and don't start weird slapfights about what is or isn't modernism thank you

By off grid they usually mean large gas or propane generator(s) maybe with some solar. Although even with just solar a good sized system should have plenty enough power for electric lighting.

The Zillow search term of the day is "Zook". Harold Zook was an architect working in suburban Chicago from the late 1910s-early 1950s and he was/is known for his Tudor Revival (or "Cotswold style") cottages, though his biggest public projects were decidedly art deco and his late works had a mid-century modern bent.

His favorite motifs were the spiderweb window and the chevron/herringbone design that you see on the tower of the St. Charles Municipal Building above.
Unfortunately several of his works have been demolished over the years and many of the remainder have been...well, you'll see.

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/405-E-7th-St-Hinsdale-IL-60521/4572958_zpid/ This is one of two houses of his that were "reimagined" by architect Michael Abraham. This one was covered on HGTV and in Luxe Magazine when it was done in 2015, and it is now on the market for $3.95 million.

gently caress this guy seriously posted:

So, the McLaughlin’s, who have six children, turned to architect Michael J. Abraham to update the home—including removing walls in the kitchen for more openness and light and transforming a former sunporch into a new family room. Abraham also felt that making the home’s interior a modern juxtaposition to the historic exterior style would have earned Zook’s approval. “The house is one of his all-time classics,” Abraham explains. “For us, it was fun to take apart a historic piece of architecture and see how it was originally put together—to really understand the scale and proportions of it.” With such great bones, Abraham says, a heavy-handed period restoration wasn’t necessary. “If Harold was around today, he wouldn’t have just redone the home as a period piece; he would have taken it to another level.”
Sadly we have no before photos, just the after. The renovation itself isn't that bad honestly, it's just that Zook houses have really strong design features and it makes no sense to just smooth that out and turn it into a cookie-cutter modern.

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/46-S-County-Line-Rd-Hinsdale-IL-60521/4572428_zpid/ The other Michael Abraham house, this one completed in spring of 2020. Also featured in Luxe which gives us more lovely quotes

not this poo poo again posted:

Like Mimi, Abraham had long loved the house, even touring it on several occasions, and he already had ideas about how to bring it into the modern era. For example, he eliminated a wall in the front foyer, opening up the curved stairway and creating a sight line between the front and back doors. He also eliminated a narrow back stairway altogether. “It was kind of a maze of little rooms and hallways that were difficult to use,” he explains[...]
In one of the most dramatic changes, they converted the small original kitchen into a breakfast space outfitted with a wall-to-wall tufted banquette and a pair of intentionally mismatched round tables. At one end, Mimi’s office houses handsome built-in cabinetry. On the ceiling, a quatrefoil pattern in a motif taken from the home’s front façade elevates the look[...]
The original formal dining room is now a much larger kitchen with gray-stained walnut cabinetry by O’Brien Harris, honed white Lincoln Calacatta marble countertops and open metal wall shelving. When illuminated, the vintage Paris streetlights above the center island reflect off the original beamed wooden ceiling and the Venetian plaster-covered walls[...]
“We push Mimi away from her comfort zone and make her spaces a little funkier than she would do on her own,” Kranitz says.
This time we do have a handful of before photos, and one of the old listings which declares " Original detailing never marred by trendy updates." So much for that. Again, is it that bad? No. Did it need to be hosed with? I don't think so.

The ceiling pattern looks really out of place imo

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/417-E-3rd-St-Hinsdale-IL-60521/4572469_zpid/ This is an oddball, a Neoclassical/Colonial Revival type house that was remodeled by Zook himself in 1938. It, too, has been totally redone recently. No before photos found. Can't say I'm a fan of this one, even without knowing what the previous version looked like. It needs more color, and all the woodwork being painted white has sucked the life out of it.

Okay, not all the woodwork. This would still look better in a warm wood stain.

there is no way that sitting area is usable

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/434-E-3rd-St-Hinsdale-IL-60521/4572505_zpid/ Oh look, a decent remodel. Or not really a remodel, just a house that has been maintained and updated without turning it into a white-and-gray HGTV showroom.

Spiderweb window!

yay they left the wood alone

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/18-Muirwood-Dr-Glen-Ellyn-IL-60137/4428976_zpid/ Another decent Zook renovation. This is a 1950s Zook so it has a much more midcentury feel.

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1719-Glenview-Ave-Park-Ridge-IL-60068/3490883_zpid/ And finally, an unmolested Zook, being sold "as-is". It's about a quarter of the size of most of the other homes in this post, but a tenth of their price.

I am sure that this has been answered somewhere but where do you get the actual search terms from? Is there some kind of magic list that generates these terms? Most of them I've never even heard of except for this thread and the previous one.

my brain, mostly

I was already browsing Zillow because I like looking at pretty/weird houses so I kinda knew what turns of phrase realtors like to use ("adorable and affordable", "if these walls could talk", "condo alternative") also various architectural styles, architects, materials, features etc.

I have a post-it note with ~future search terms~ on it as I come up with them

The Zillow search of the day is "Tuxedo Park"

Emily Post in 1911 posted:

"In beginning Tuxedo, the architect's idea was to fit buildings with the surrounding woods, and the gate-lodge and keep were built of graystone with as much moss and lichen as possible. The shingled cottages were stained with the color of the woods—russets and grays and dull reds—ugly to the taste of a quarter century later, though this treatment did much to neutralize the newness of the buildings—Old World and tradition-haunted as it looks, it is new, incredibly new."
The homes at Tuxedo Park are a mixture of Queen Anne, Tudor, and Shingle-style, most built from 1885-1925. Its Gilded Age residents included George Fisher Baker, J.P. Morgan, William Waldorf Astor, Henry Varnum Poor (of Standard & Poor's) and Augustus Julliard.

The Zillow search term of the day is "A. Hays Town"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._Hays_Town

quote:

Town’s earlier homes borrowed from American colonial architecture and Georgian architecture influences. As his career progressed he began developing his own style influenced heavily by Spanish and French architecture. Interior courtyards and fountains reflect the Spanish tradition, while raised exterior stairs and French doors reflect the Creole influence of New Orleans. Town also took the climate of southern Louisiana into account while designing his homes, using large roof overhangs, an abundance of breezeways, and cross ventilation to provide air circulation.

Town's involvement in the selection of interior materials, colors, and even furnishings was extensive—sometimes going as far as to include the recommendation of a certain type of dog to accent the house. Town was one of the first architects to salvage old building materials and incorporate them into new houses, giving his homes a comfortable, elegant feel. He would often scrounge abandoned warehouses and rice mills for floorboards, fireplace mantels, or flagstones, handpicking the individual elements that would eventually be incorporated into his architecture.
Town lived to be 101 years old and designed buildings from the 1920s all the way to the 2000s, which is insane to me.

Crappy construction thread has dug into that a few times. Natural building techniques tend to be advertised as the "cheaper" and easy-to-DIY option when in reality if they aren't done correctly and in an appropriate climate they can be prone to mold, poor indoor air quality, structural weakness, etc. A thread specifically for them would be very welcome though because when done well they are really neat.
