Just popping in to update my bookmarks and reiterate my desire to pour molten lead down the throats of whatever focus group fucks at HGTV started this whole "everything must be grey wood floors and white painted shiplap" bullshit.

Slowly house hunting, and so many flippers out here buying perfectly good small houses with craftsman era woodwork, painting everything white and throwing down some grey vinyl, then putting it back on the market three months later for 150% of what they paid.

Want a laugh about the whole paint-everything-white situation? My new apartment (lease ended at the peak of the covid situation locally, had to move in without actually visiting & just going off of video/photo tours done to request by apartment office staff) got everything repainted and touched over before they handed it over to me. Including repainting all the bits they painted white. Because, you know, "modern" (in an apartment with a fridge still using bloody CFCs, built after they were banned for new production).

So goddamn much repainted, and so much painted to match, that they managed to paint the breaker box AND one of the air vents shut. It's been a month and I'm still finding things they painted over for the sake of "color coordination" that really didn't need to be.

They did Flat White Everything on my place too, and for a real laugh check this out:

They painted the light switches because the prior tenant had painted that wall tan and swapped to brown switches.

I absolutely get vaulted ceilings as someone who's well over six feet tall and lived in a house with eight foot ceilings growing up and got tired of eating light fixtures to the face.

The only mistake here is not going hard on the Victorian theming in every room. Why would you not make it a Sherlock/Agatha Christie mystery house? Total lack of imagination on the owners' part; no wonder the escape business failed.

Yeah. I have no idea why you'd try to run an escape room business out of a national historic register victorian house unless you're going to lean hard into that, otherwise a strip mall box that's a blank slate and you can rearrange with quick stick built walls would be vastly better.

I think you really need to wait until the room is done, and you have your furniture in there. Then decide on wall paint. Then after that is done, decide on the ceiling. Are you able to leave the ceiling unfinished prior to that?

That sounds like an absolute nightmare from a practical perspective. Shift all the furniture out repeatedly to finish the room after, and hope you can somehow paint all the walls and the ceiling without damaging your floor coverings?

Huge pain in the rear end.

Someone at HGTV needs to be fed into a wood chipper for starting this.

Behold, a normal, mid-50's midwestern house!

Now let's take a look inside.

Uhoh.

What in the world...

This poor house.

It did not deserve this.

I don't know which bedroom this is, they're identical.

They even did the basement. :psyduck:

Drumroll please.... 864 square feet, sold for $112,000 in October 2020. Apparently doing this... thing to it without even bothering to repaint the outside makes them believe they deserve an 72,000 dollar payday, as it went on the market for $184,900.

Yep. I'm to the point where I'll probably end up building if I can ever afford to own because the entire small housing stock here is either trashed or 'flipped' with pasted over mechanical issues.

That kitchen is also still making me furious. Minimalist stove/fridge/sink, terrible work triangle, no counterspace, and a grand total of four cabinets, only one above counter level.

No one who likes to cook was involved in that.

actionjackson posted:

why would that sink be bad for someone who likes to cook? as I said I have it, and I'm definitely not a big cook, but I can see how having space for larger pots and pans being really nice.

The sink itself isn't an issue, but the path from fridge to sink requires going around that island's corner, and there's not enough working space next to the stove for even a spice rack. No mounted microwave either so if you want one you'll have to eat 2-3 feet of counter for it.

linoleum is good y'all

don't paint that woodwork (unless it's a kitchen, bathroom or bedroom)! I 100% agree that the lighter stains of wood don't look as good on floors

colors are good

carpet is old news

The Craftsman has rapidly become 90% of my housing aesthetic. Expensive to replicate today, but drat if it doesn't look timeless and great when executed well.

Used to be I couldn't see a use for a basement bar. Now, though, it makes more sense given the wreckage that is going to be the restaurant industry by the time we quit loving around and get vaccination done.

I don't like the tile top, but that's not a bad way of putting a kitchen into a room that wasn't historically built to be a kitchen without tearing out all the windows.

Behold, more flipper BS:

Bought 10/20 for $140k, put up 4/10/21 for $155k. Only change between the listings: All the carpet was pulled out and replaced with grey vinyl.

Stainless tables are the bomb. I'd like to just use them instead of counters, with a big butcher-top prep table as an island for doing bread/pastry work.

Mission style was a contemporary of the arts and crafts movement that used some similarly simple forms but without the pretense of hand-crafting or construction methods as decoration. They get lumped together based on form by people who either don't know or don't care what the movement was about.

I think.

The Arts and Crafts movement was late 19th century anti-industrial idealism focused on hand craftsmanship. As I understand it, there are three main commercial forms that came out of it in the US. Gustav and Leo Stickley's Craftsman works, named after Gustav's magazine The Craftsman. Mission style, which was east coast US work by Joseph McHugh. And of course the Chicago-based Prairie style, most associated with Frank Lloyd Wright. All are, outside of truly high end stuff, factory made with handcraft style details.

They're based around use of natural woods with vertical and horizontal lines as well as paneling to complement the grain of the wood (often cherry or quartersawn white oak), handcrafted details, and simplicity of design.

Stickley's still in business, but very much high end for my budget, even if they do make exactly what I want.

Not sure where you are but you can probably find some really nice pieces at good prices at Amish furniture stores. If you're anywhere near Michigan, I highly recommend Bear In The Woods. They appear to be a Simply Amish dealer, and I dug around and found a local one, thanks!

Still expensive, and 20+ weeks lead time right now thanks to everything, but they have what I want.
