Thoughts on a combined thread for 'tactical combat RPGs'?
Right now the Lancer thread has occasional spurts of activity. The kind of crowd interested in that might also be interested in other games inspired by DnD4e or that otherwise heavily feature tactical combat that don't yet have as big a playerbase or are still in playtesting.

Could include:
- The 'Fragged' games like Fragged Aeternum
- ICON, the upcoming fantasy game by the Lancer makers
- Beacon, which appears to be another fantasy game of similar aesthetic to Icon
- Wyrdwood Wand, which is about college wizards
- Gubat Banwa, a fantasy Phillipines and other islands
- goon project Let Thrones Beware? is that still going somewhere?

I've played a few of these (LANCER, PF2e, D&D4e) and I think the problem here would be that learning each one of these is a significant investment and I doubt that the people interested in one or two of these will be interested in the posts about the other.

I'd be interested in, like, a Let's Read series that compares and contrasts these, though.

I wouldn't put a kibosh on such a thread, but it's a fair point that I'm nut sure a lot of people play multiples of those games or want to discuss all of them in one thread? But then again a thread could just be like some guidance comparing/contrasting them like Megazver suggested.

You could ask if there's interest in such a thing in the various threads like the Lancer thread?

What's your guy's thoughts on a creative brainstorming thread? Like a thread that goes across all systems for TTRPGS where you can ask for creative advice and share ideas/maps/stories etc. for your setting or other creative activities?

We see some of that sort of thing in the DM Advice thread, fwiw.

You meant the RPG, right? Yes!

Warhammer Fantasy Battles is gone, replaced by Age of Sigmar, which is not really a unit maneuver battle game, so some folks moved to Mantic's Kings of War, although that thread is basically dead these days.

I was hoping for a 15 year old WFB thread still plodding along somewhere. I'm vaguely familiar with Age of Sigmar and am not a fan, but I'm sure all those arguments have already been had several years ago!

WHFB is on a weird kind of pause until its return "soon." GW has announced The Old World, but been very tight lipped about it.

If Horus Heresy is anything to go by, we can safely expect a very satisfying WHFB: greatest hits edition. This won't satisfy everybody, because gamers cannot be satisfied.

You'll absolutely find more discussion once TOW drops.

Maybe this is why the Warhammer Fantasy Old World maps I bought in a "nobody cares about this stuff" pile for $1 each 10 years ago sold for $40 each at the Gen-Con Auction this year if there is a big pending return?

The forums don't archive anymore due to a bug in the system where it was erasing threads. If there's no thread nobody made a thread.

Also I think the art thread yet lives, but I think trapstar already posts over there so I'm just saying so for others who might not know. Maybe the Hot Modrons title isn't super informative! But it also says [TG Art Thread] so hopefully that helps.

It’s probably time someone posts a new version of the art thread. It was never super high traffic, and I always tried to keep the links in the OP current and not dead, but enough time has passed that someone might wanna do the needful.

If they do, please steal as much or as little from the OP as possible, including the links. I’m never deleting those imgur pictures, so no worries there. One of those images even got made into a couple of gangtags! (Thai cuisine white wolf one)

I posted this in the FFG Star Wars RPG thread already, but I'm looking for a more generic Star Wars roleplaying thread. I've just started GMing my first ever (player or gamemaster) Star Wars D6 game, something I've wanted to do for 29 years now. Is this something I should start a new thread for? Is there any interest in this 30 year old system here?

I think it would be 100% fine posting in the existing throughout as long as you explain you’re talking about the old game.

Leperflesh

Yeah I think that thread is going to be default the star wars roleplaying game thread where people who play star wars hang out. A lot of them played previous editions.

If oldwars chat becomes very common in that thread, feel free to make a breakout thread for it, but for example generic dungeons and dragons chat basically winds up in the 5e D&D thread mostly.

I don't want to dismiss it out of hand, but it sounds like an uphill battle. It's the kind of thing people do not want to admit to knowing a lot about. So I predict the majority of posts would just be mocking the handful of users who "revealed their power level" by writing an informative OP or trying to have a constructive discussion.

I don't think there's anything to know other than that Book of Erotic Fantasy was a D20 embarrassment and everybody I know just kinda awkwardly glossed over the Sex Moves in apocalypse world.

Sex and eroticism is a third rail for a lot of peer groups, not out of prude Tipper Gore pearl-clutching but more out of practically.

I don't know, maybe I'm wrong and gently caress dungeons where you talk about banging your friends' characters are the next OSR.

Unfortunately some segment of "erotic game" actually translates to "game with some extremely problematic poo poo, positioned as 'erotic' as an excuse or veneer". However I have seen e.g. "games for lovers" advertised on the shelf in normal game stores, too.

We're not exactly a rated-PG forum so I wouldn't say it's totally off limits, but I would caution anyone in such a thread to be aware that the general population of SA's TG subforum takes a Dim View of Problematic Crap, we routinely mock titty models in the terrible minis thread, people got absolutely piled on in the boardgame thread for being fans of a gross boardgame, etc. Simply gleefully posting about how sexy some exploitative game looks isn't going to get an enthusiastic reception.

But of course consenting adults can play erotic games and I don't think TG should ban discussion of them out of hand. My opinion, I haven't asked the other mods.

I'll take a step further and say that the TG subforum reacts this way to any depiction of sex in an RPG. There was a guy who tried to review Bluebeard's Bride in Fatal and Friends and got the same reaction. The thread did not think a game about abuse could be anything but pornography for the players to masturbate to. I can't imagine a game that was pornography for the players to masturbate to would get a better reaction.

I had that 'games for lovers' genre in mind, like what you might find in Spenser's Gifts or a sex shop. I always kind of wondered if there were interesting design decisions in any of those, or if it was just 'roll dice with dares instead of numbers' gag gift stuff. It sounds like there's a lot of gross problematic bullshit in the RPG end of the eros gaming world that could get messy (sadly this does not surprise me as I've seen the tabletop game politics thread in D&D). I'm fine foregoing discussion of the topic.

hey any interest in a play by post adaptation of Traveller?

SniperWoreConverse posted:

alright ive been working off and on (mostly off), and got what i think is an extremely jank halfass campaign skeleton set up alright, altho i have almost no art for it yet which is kinda lovely. Does anybody wanna help test it?

The highly esteemed Dr. Sledj needs a team of "ok enough" interns to do some simple errands at the university of Hesaim:

imo this is a good spot to start because the kinds of people who would be scouts or scholars from the abridged rules would hang out in this system i think.

I still only ever picked up the $1 ruleset + Death Station + Stranded, so these three cheap things would be all u need, basically. Or i plan on using stuff from in those things -- you won't really need anything tbh.
the gimmicks of this thread would be the same as my other threads:
  • like the gbs ones, you can basically bullshit up whatever character sounds decent enough 2u, altho at least try to semi follow the rules on this one. I'm planning on just sorta shepherding it and the thread itself can consensus on changes in rule details, like the gbs "rule system" built itself from nothing.
  • like gbs you can also drop in and out however whenever. Any number of goons who want in can get in or bail out, i have devised a shaky mechanism for this if needed
  • like zlata (who I swear is still going to be updated and hopefully soon) you can get passive skill roll data dumps, and have some npc buds
  • like both, NPCs might actually be somebody else's PCs, so watch ur rear end i'm not puppeting everything. All my threads are always in the same setting even if the set dressing is different. *cue maniacal laughter*
I'm aiming for a slightly more serious and structured version of the barely holding together goofball GBS thread. I guess kind of like an individualized players version of Zlata. But in space cause why not? Also having this would help me keep everything updated more reasonably, i hope.

i don't wanna bother making the thread unless there's some people who actually wanna play

e: I'm doing an actual recruitment thread: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=4030205
