like that glass-bottom walkway in china that went viral a few years back

pretty sure someone actually did die from falling off that thing

the exact details of this whole incident take some suspension (haw haw) of disbelief - corpses are heavy - but imo the leadup to it is much better and makes the whole thing easier to swallow. sunny didn't want that stupid violin. his friends got it for him because they thought it would be a nice gesture and he went along with practicing it as a way of returning their generosity, and volunteered for the recital because he loved his sister and wanted to spend more time with her. but mari was also hinted to be something of a perfectionist control freak beneath all her good qualities, so what was supposed to be quality time became torture for both of them. sunny probably spent weeks with her getting increasingly aggravated over his every mistake, thinking the whole time "i hate this. i hate this. i hate this" and when he finally smashed the thing, mari was so fed up and stressed out that she blew up at him in return. and then, well

Well those aren't rhetorical questions. Just my attempt to think it through. There are a lot of plausible reasons, it's just hard to stop thinking in terms is "Sunny is mad because of a bad thing Basil did" without Sunny being complicit, because he super is, and Basil was trying to help Sunny somehow in this hosed up situation. Just such a reversal from what I'd expected.

sunny probably does resent basil to an extent - they were both basically in a fugue on that day, but basil was still the one who came up with the idea, so sunny offloads part of his own crushing guilt onto basil - but we've already seen the divide between what sunny thinks and what omori thinks. basil is despised in headspace because, as the center of sunny's trauma, he'll always bring back memories of what happened to mari, and omori exists to destroy anything that might bring that trauma to the surface. he's a runaway coping mechanism who's become more and more malignant as sunny continued to alienate himself from the rest of the world, and even before he went Ides of March on basil in black space, his attempts to continue suppressing the truth were clearly becoming more frantic

this is also why sweetheart is so obnoxiously prevalent in the headspace segments. she literally exists to distract you. for day 3 in particular, there's barely any logical transition between the playground going empty, jawsum's casino, and sweetheart's appearance, because omori is desperately ginning up whatever bullshit adventures he can think of in an attempt to make the last remnants of basil fade away from sunny's mind. but it doesn't work, so omori shrugs and gets the knife

I did NOT get that from Sweetheart’s involvement, and now I’m struck with the hindsight of how obvious it was. There was also a lot of talk directed at Omori around that time that was basically asking him if he was, now seeing it in hindsight, going to kill Basil AGAIN. So this has been going on over and over for four years. Jesus. Poor Sunny.

that's the loop sunny's trapped in. omori wants him to disappear, but sunny still loves him too much for him to stay gone, so his idealized version hangs around in headspace, remembers what happened to mari, begins to corrupt headspace with his trauma, and omori butchers him, buries the leftovers in black space - which, if the map is any indication, has grown almost as big as headspace itself - and starts over

sunny's mom is probably well-meaning but it's hard to charitably interpret someone leaving their mentally disturbed kid alone for days with only a single plate of leftovers to feed themselves. at the very least i'd say she's exhausted by having to look after him in such a tense environment and got a little too enthusiastic about the prospect of "taking a break" from him

On the topic of bad parenting, is there any indication that Bagel's parents are even alive? His grandma's in the room that's the master bedroom in most of the houses.

they work abroad, pay polly's salary, and beyond that don't seem to give a poo poo if basil lives or dies. i think it's said somewhere in the game that no one else in the group has ever seen them

This made me curious about the word and its relationship to Sunny's alter-ego. From my expert use of Google Translate, it looks like the characters こもり spell "omori" and mean "muffled." So that fits a silent protagonist anyway. :v:

"omori" can also roughly translate to "vast forest," which google helpfully told me before i realized the much more obvious hikikomori reference

That was certainly a choice when it came to the music for that segment. I'm not sure I get it, honestly, unless it's supposed to be for contrast with the sudden stop at the end.

motifs of sleep/dreaming, matches tonally with the game's sugary-sweet adventure hiding unhinged menace

this is mostly unrelated, but it was also associated with oyasumi punpun, which is probably one of the major inspirations for omori

The absolute worst thing about that ending? The other kids told Sunny to leave and go home, and if he’d stayed with them he’d have been safe (in the short term at least). They’re going to be blaming themselves for the rest of their lives for all three suicides, with no idea of the root cause.

you can also just go home and off yourself without checking on basil/waking the others at all, which is probably worse

i think comparing the hikki and undertale genocide routes is apples to oranges imho. the hikki route should be done first because it lacks context. replaying on normal makes one appreciate what was really going on in the plot more. i wish i had played it first and just watched LPs of the real life segments

i really don't agree with this. storywise the hikki route didn't need to exist at all, the plot stands up just fine without it. it's for completionists who want to exhaust all the game's secrets and all the quirks of its combat
