We don't need to have that dialogue because it's obvious, trivial, and has already been had a thousand times.

Welcome to the 2020 Political Cartoons Award Thread! Now with a new, less offensive name!

We had a relatively low number of nominations from the thread and wiki in 2020 (I've been gathering them, don't worry), so I am actively soliciting additional nominations. Please read the 2020 thread and share your nominations here. You don't have to nominate in every category, and comics can be nominated multiple times for one award, or in multiple categories at once.

Voting

On February 21 we'll close nominations and I will restructure the thread for voting, listing all currently nominated comics. Voting will be easy: just pick a single comic from each category you want to vote in.

Voting is now active and will continue until March 26. See voting rules below.

Nomination Rules and Suggestions

  • Standard D&D rules apply.
  • Please don't quote all the images from a nomination post unless you intend to discuss all them.
  • Please do not use this thread for discussion of general political topics. Please do feel free to discuss your nominations and reasoning.
  • Please only post cartoons that were featured in the Political Cartoons thread and were published in 2020.
  • Post only one nomination post. Any future cartoon you would like to submit should be edited into that post.
  • Only submit one nomination per category.

NEW IN 2020: Special Awards!

If you believe a cartoon or cartoonist should receive a special, one-time or lifetime achievement award, please post about it in this thread.

Previous Years' Awards threads:
2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 Mid-term, 2015, 2016 Mid-Term, 2016, 2017 Mid-term, 2017, 2018, and 2019.

You will be able to see the final winners on Wiki Sours, the SA Politoons wiki!

Nominations and Voting

Voting will continue until March 26.

How to vote
Each category has a letter or letter combo, and each cartoon has a number.
Make a post with the number of each entry you're voting for and what category it's in. I'll take either the letter or the category name.
You get one vote per category. If you want to change your vote or add a vote in a category you haven't already voted in, please edit your existing post!

NEW THIS YEAR! Prizes
The creator of the winning "Best Edit/Parody" and the user with the most winning nominations will both receive a forums upgrade of their choice!

Kellies Kategories and Nominees
Notes: I removed or condensed a couple categories because they got no or only one nomination. Listed dates are posting date for the image. First person to nominate a cartoon will get credit in the awards. Unless otherwise stated, any text following a nominee is context from its original posting or nomination.

It pissed off racists and caused a small stir in right wing media recently for some reason (possibly they finally looked at the NMAAHC website to find things to criticize John Lewis). Bok has selectively quoted the descriptors he sees as unmitigated good and left out the context of "this is how white culture sees itself" to show how race criticism is the real racism.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is dead. I have to hand it to her—she was a very tough little old lady. As Trump said, “She had an amazing life.” That’s one way of putting it. She beat various forms of cancer and escaped death over and over again. Perhaps because she had a reason to keep living. Not just for the power she had as a member of the highest court in the land, but also because she had a great dislike for President Trump. She had hoped to hang on until Biden got elected. The question is, why didn’t she retire during Obama’s term so she could be replaced by an another far-left liberal? Probably because she, like many of her fellow experts, expected Hillary to win easily.
While many are paying their respects to the feminist Ginsburg who fought for equality, we must bear in mind that she also supported taxpayer-funded abortion on demand. She wanted to take our guns. She saw the 2nd Amendment as being obsolete. She said the Constitution was an ‘antiquated document.’ Instead of interpreting the Constitution, she held it in contempt.
Now that Ginsburg is dead, we are in for an inevitable rollercoaster ride in the form of a Senate confirmation battle. Most likely we’ll see massive protests if Trump’s replacement is confirmed ahead of the election, but it’s important that we have a fully-stocked court to make important decisions on said election. After all, the Democrats and especially Hillary want to contest the election regardless of the result.

We don't need to have that dialogue because it's obvious, trivial, and has already been had a thousand times.

Search doesn't find partial words. Use the word 'nomination'.

...oh.

Thread will be live for voting by Monday!

So it's Monday, is the voting thread ready yet?

I'm going through the remaining 70 posts tonight. Voting will go live tonight. We're probably going to have close to 200 nominees.

I am just kicking myself for asking for additional nominations, this is a freaking nightmare to manage. I've got some stuff in the works, courtesy of other goons, that will make future years much more manageable.

edit: just gotta grab the ones from this thread...then cruch them all into a post. Manually. We're at or near 200 nominations this year.

edit: a total 210 nominations, counting some special cases, are now coded. I'll clean the data and get it set up tonight and prep and post the voting tomorrow.

edit: Following some cleaning and removal of duplicates (yes I am using a spreadsheet), we have 192 entries.

About a quarter of all entries were for the Gaslighter category. I think we need to find some way to break that group down for future years.

The "bigotry" category is gonna have 300 nominees next year.

You were incorrect, my friend. "Only" 29 bigotry entries in 2020. We're just...inured to it.

edit: Users Cat Mattress (now banned) and CAT INTERCEPTOR get the finger of shame for listing nominations as "nominations".

Could someone compile obits or summaries of any artists who died or retired in 2020? Or names at least?

This is an all-timer portal into directly seeing the brainworms and it's almost disappointing that Ben's banned from almost everything.

True story one entry had to be disqualified because it linked a tweet for the comic and I could not track down the original image anywhere.

:siren: 56k alert! The 2020 Kellies nominations are now live! :siren:

(I am now going through and manually timging as appropriate)

Notes: I removed or condensed a couple categories because they got no or only one nomination. Listed dates are posting date for the image. First person to nominate a cartoon will get credit in the awards. Unless otherwise stated, any text following a nominee is context from its original posting or nomination.

Voting will continue until March 26.

How to vote
  • Each category has a letter or letter combo, and each cartoon has a number.
  • Make a post with the number of each entry you're voting for and what category it's in. I'll take either the letter or the category name.
  • You get one vote per category. If you want to change your vote or add a vote in a category you haven't already voted in, please edit your existing post!

NEW THIS YEAR! Prizes
The creator of the winning "Best Edit/Parody" and the user with the most winning nominations will both receive a forums upgrade of their choice!

Special Ks!
Let me know if any cartoonists from 2020 deserve special awards, such as for dying or retiring!

That Prickly City's an obituary? I've got no idea what/who it's meant to be about.

It appears to have been nominated for Winslow the coyote himself.

Voting for the Kellies has closed. I will tally the votes and announce winners and analytics in a separate thread in a couple days.
