Good soup! posted:From BroadstreetHockey I can help! The problem here is you're trying to watch the hockey game. That is wrong. What you should be doing is staring at a spreadsheet. Spreadsheet says Boston had 53-54% of the corsi and actual shots. Flyers had 59% of the scoring chances while they and the Bruins split the high danger chances. xG per Natural Stat says they split 53 to 47 in Philly's favor. Despite that the Flyers converted 1 high danger and 2 regular scoring into goals at 5v5. That is at least the beginnings of sustainable hockey and why they are talking the way they are.

It's very much cash in and rebuild time imo. Letang and Malkin both have a year left (after this season) and I think if the Pens can get value out of trading those contracts maybe they do. However, not a ton of picks and there is a mess of contracts now from GM JR just throwing everything at the wall and seeing what stuck. It'll be different that's for sure and if he isn't handing out dumb as gently caress offseason contracts that would be nice. Also get rid of Matheson. I think you could potentially pivot the roster, but man it's iffy. I don't think this team and it's current system is near a cup though.

CBJSprague24 posted:Lost in the shuffle of "lol gently caress Torts" is Laine was the subject of his own "This Guy Scored" last night, which probably didn't help his coach's mood: So I looked up this play because I'm staring at this picture and I see 2 D men in front with 1 Hurricane. 2 other Jackets tied up in the circle with another Cane and Laine...there. Events - Faceoff loss. Canesleft winger easy pass to the left point. Canes D guy has 2 seconds shifts to his left to throw the puck at the net. 23 for the Canes gets away with a bit of a pick. Puck hits someone in front. There are 2 Canes on top of each other with the puck in the high slot after the puck is blocked down. 13 gets a decent shot off with 2 CBJ players both in mad scramble mode to try and block the shot. 23 gets free and finds the puck out in front because someone does block the shot (whoever the Jacket is in front) and it's easy to put home because of mad scramble. Now Laine basically floats out towards the point from the face off loss. Follows the D guy down into the top of the circle and then just stands on the faceoff dot. Laine doesn't really do anything else. Now I guess Laine could come into the pile of humanity in the slot and help out there. If you're being super critical of Laine it's that he is in no mans land achieving nothing. However, his teammates are running around completely unstructured and lol that's why they got scored on. Benching Laine for a complete system breakdown there is loving stupid though.

Just their goaltending has taken a hilarious time to take a dump, and their non-Panarin veterans are seemingly allergic to putting the puck in the net. I'm sure it'll level off (especially with how good Shesterkin is as a goalie) but these stretches are very often the final straws for coaches before getting fired. 47% coris, 48.5% shots for, and 47% xGF last year with 51.2% actual results on the back of above average scoring/high danger chance conversion. This year it's a 49% corsi for, 51% Shots for, and 51% xGF. Currently rocking a 46% actual GF on the back of a bit lower scoring/high danger chance conversions and a drop off in the sv% numbers. The east is really weird this year though. Flyers are getting decent outcomes despite being not very good on the spreadsheet. Pittsburgh is getting the 2nd worst goaltending in the league...good thing they traded a puts finger to ear piece hm the guy they traded...that bad? Wow. The East is wide open.

Ginette Reno posted:I don't even know if it's all that either. I think a lot of other teams got better and the Pens stagnated a bit. There's also been a huge push to emulate how the Pens played. Teams are going more focused on speed and skill. The speed advantage the Pens used to have is not as much evident against most teams now. Everyone can skate. IMO I don't think Sullivan has the players to execute his systems and getting those players is probably impossible 'cause it requires the Crosby/Geno of a few years ago along with a Conor Sheary having a career year, a breakout Guentzel, Bonino providing extremely solid 3rd line play along with a high flying Hagelin (who shouldn't have been traded ) and Kessel, and having a D Core that could move the puck cleanly and efficiently. At present the goaltending is the most glaring issue, however the defending is paying a part into that. The front of the Pens goal is a bright red blob of super high danger chances that they're giving away every game. Something Sullivan loves to do is have his center swing super low into the corner/behind the net battles and if they win that battle they go up the wing and take a bumper pass to the middle. Unfortunately this hasn't worked as well in the last 3.5 years vs the first 2.5 years for Sullivan and a big part of that is speed both in terms of the Pens centers and their defenders. Letang can't skate anywhere nearly like he used to and most the rest of the back end now are decent but they aren't the Makar/Hughes jump up on the play types that thrived in Sullivan's system. I think the team can still have some success, but it likely requires a tighter system.....and some saves.
