Yes, it is what it looks like!

There's a goon dev for Rocket Cat Games. They did Death Road to Canada, Wayward Souls and Punch Quest. They posted in the Mobile Games thread for a while but I haven't looked at it in some time.

Edit: Deathstate dev is also a goon

I never get the chance to ask this, but it's a question that keeps popping in my mind: what exactly makes an indie want to do an online game where the chances that it will succeed in attracting an active audience are much, much smaller than doing a single player game where you won't have to worry about the lack of online population?

Indie developers often make the games they personally would like to play rather than what will be successful. That's what I did at least. I HATED almost every mobile game I tried, and eventually just ended up playing Lolo roms on my phone. Finally I said gently caress it I'll just make one.

Our situation was a little different since the whole thing started as a bachelor's thesis, and we thought it'd be simple to "just add online multiplayer".

I think it mostly boils down to inflated self-confidence and somehow thinking that all the similar games that're failing were somehow missing something we had.

That's odd, when I clicked on the link I discovered I already had it on 'ignore'. Now why did I do that? It was so long ago I can't actually remember what transpired. I wish I could search by name on the Lepers colony and find out.

So, I looked into the above. Gunscape was made by a goon initially known as The Radix, name later changed to diamond dog. diamond dog went into a very weird paranoid rant in a post funny pictures thread in YOSPOS where he thought free speech had ended in the forums because he couldn't throw transphobic slurs anymore, eventually culminating in a ban after he wouldn't calm down. No idea how the game turned out, though I did watch an intro video of it and it looked like an amusing mix of original Doom + TF2 + Minecraft.

There were a lot of posts about the game in the Making Games Thread, mostly by him, but some goons legit looked excited about the project. It failed on Kickstarter at first, but still managed to launch. I guess him later outing himself as a complete douchebag means none of that matters, though.

I've worked on and released a couple games, so I thought I'd mention them here! I'm the only goon on our two-person team, hopefully that's enough to qualify for the list.

You can find them all on our itch.io page. Our latest game is on Steam, it's a silly futuristic sports game called Cyber Badminton 2020.

That's absolutely enough! Put 'em on the spreadsheet and I'm looking at Broken Silence because a visual novel about escaping a killer sounds awesome. It's also really cool that you made a lightweight version of the game for those who can't run the original!

It's probably not much of a story, but now I'm curious what exactly it is that they are (or were) still using.

The Librarian is pure.
Former Star Ruler 2 Dev.
It's not quite out yet for full release but To Ash and Ember is goon-soft. It does have an alpha build on Itch.io for the brave few who don't mind wading through an early alpha game: https://firgof.itch.io/to-ash-and-ember

e: Oh. And I'm the goon. The one making the thing above.

Technically Star Ruler 1 and Star Ruler 2, by extension, were also made by a team that included goons since I was the co-lead developer on both. Both are 4X/RTS Hybrids. The second one tried really hard to shake off all the rust the 4X model had and includes the Diplomacy system I put a lot of sweat and tears into. Sadly, I wasn't as good of an artist then as I am now so expect the look of games with no art department. Second game's totally open source by the way; feel free to fork it and dissect it to learn stuff or build your own 4X/RTS Hybrid if you like working with C++.

For the "games with team members who are goons" list, there are quite a few goons at Paradox Development Studio. Johan (one of the studio heads) posts in the Paradox thread sometimes although I don't know if he has much of a presence outside of it - Wiz (Martin Anward) was a Let's Player and modder before getting hired at Paradox and at one point was the director for Stellaris. There are a few others whose names I don't remember off the top of my head but have a pretty regular presence in the various Paradox threads, I don't think there are any Paradox developed games at this point that haven't had a goon hand in them at some level.

*edit* also just remembered, Everdraed had a pretty notable contribution to Undertale
