So put about 40 hours into the demo. Capped all my currencies on every class and farmed up a few legendaries. Probably will make a couple more just for fun.

Loving the super rapid looter shooter grind as I haven't had this since diablo ii mephisto runs and the "just one more" feel. It really is a chill pastime between meetings at work.

I realise it's not everyone's cup of tea but I'm super happy to see they didn't nerf that but buffed other areas.

At level 7 there's only so much you can say. I'm just happy that the core loop is really solid and even with 4 skills and some basic rare gear there are a tonne of options for builds across the 4 characters. I'm confident each will have some super fun niches.

Also Holy poo poo this gun is OP as hell.

The down scaling in lower tiers is really bugging me. I am playing in a trio with my wife and a friend. I play a bit more than them so have been optimising my technomancer while faffing about with my pyro and devestator trying to find something decent.

I eventually just hopped onto my technomancer to blitz through low tiers and catch them up and while the damage is there as I was upgrading my gear to 47 I found I was taking more damage. The way the game scales you down really feels like it defeats the purpose. I want to smash low end poo poo and go help my friends so they don't have to grind as much.

Also feeling kinda stuck at wt11. Wt12 is doable solo just, I've got good build, near perfect stats and a few more shards to spend but I'm basically waiting on solo wt11 or group wt10 to drop the legendaries I need to progress which is kinda far from fun.

The fact that I don't need loads of legendaries to do 4x the damage of my friends on dev and trickster is mad. I'm mostly using the 25 percent grim marrow weapon buff as its just broken.

So. The entire endgame once you can clear CT15 is parking all your chars at the vendor in rift town and trench town and relogging them every 30 minutes looking for greens or blues with the right stats.

Then when you run out of money not getting good rolls you go mash out an easy t15 expedition, and turn all the drop pod resources into other currencies and rinse repeat.

I mean it's great for WFH between meetings but uh...yeah my group are all flagging. Especially as the solo viable builds that use all the many on kill effects are just unreliable as hell in 3 player.

CT15 saying its designed for group is hilarious when there's no group synergy at all.

E: I mean don't get me wrong, my wife mains a devestator and watching her stampeding up a sniper kill alley sending mooks scattering out of cover bleeding and on fire is glorious to behold as I pick them off, but she really is done with having less than 1/6th of my damage and nearly no threat control or group utility.

So comparing my ct15 techno bullet build to my ct15 pyro AP build. I honestly don't know.

Ct15 solo feels way more risk reward on the allegedly broken overpowered techno. I have to dodge and weave smartly with very quick target priotisation in the pillar fights and if I learn the maps I can completely wreck everything as it spawns.

The pyro which is a 90 percent complete flame wall debuffer build I made so my friend could stop getting mad and just play his techno for fun... But its basically gather all the mobs into a giant fuckpile and hope my defensive armour buffs aren't on cooldown when two brood mothers choose to swipe at me at the same time.

It's just... Less fun. All the anomaly builds I've tried are.

Also snipers are such hilarious bullshit. The way they target lock you and instantly snipe you whatever side of cover you pop out from.

If not for the emergency stance bug it feels nearly none of these builds I'm trying would be viable til they were fully geared and like the techno could alpha strike everything as it spawns.

Trying to get the good legendary mods on my pyro is a total ballache.

I can easily clear t15 stargrave and archways with the debuff / living bomb build in about 10 mins but its just so... Slow feeling.

My techno can clear stargrave in nearly sub 5m and it feels highly skillful learning the locations of all the mobs and shaving seconds off each run. It's fun as hell.

Rounding everything into a giant mush pile and watching my health yoyo then chasing after a load of snipers for 2 minutes hoping they don't line up an alpha strike is stressful and feels kinda poo poo.

I have to just grind this over and over for the chance of a few drops to just 'try' a new build.

I think that's where it falls down. In late d3 you could fairly easily get the set you wanted up and running but the rolls would be balls. So you spent a lot of time trying to perfect it and cubing weapons to reroll.

This feels much more like early d3. Where even getting a set was a major wow.

Just an FYI if you're trying to roll the perfect stats for purple gear.

Hunt for greens on the merchant in Rift town, use multiple characters.

Once you get the stats you want. Go to your camp. Buy an item, any item, off of a vendor in the camp. This forces an auto save. (unsure if currency exchanges also force this)

You now have ~60 seconds to get to Zahedi. Upgrade your item. If it doesn't get the skill you want. Alt + F4. It'll be back to the previous rarity.

Realise the RNG on this is ALSO bullshit. Get mad.

Wow so the patch sure is something.

It's... Doable? But it's loving insanely tense dealing with CT15 now. You have to assume everything can one shot you and kite kite kite.

It's stressful as hell and... not fun. It's like I'm playing a mode with no armour way above my level. Like I've not gotten any gear this last month.

I could see the appeal of this as a separate mode for good rewards. But for the same rng poo poo from expeditions? Nah.

Oh and it'd be a lot more fun with a static group but guess what, my friends have all quit before this. So wellp!

Nah its just ungodly expensive and requires the publisher to be not an awful dick (or be self published)

Lots of companies who've never done live service are jumping into it as the next big thing without any experience, learnings or history from the last 30 years of MMOs.

lol video game people are so entitled. you can't expect to play a game release day week month quarter. all games have these problems.

I work in the games industry as a specialist in live ops games and have been for 16 years. Trust me, most people have no loving clue what they're doing, especially in the console space. PC is an afterthought and they usually hire someone like me 6 months before launch when they realise how hosed they are.

Not saying that's what happened here but no, all games do not have these problems. It requires years of forward planning and a huge commitment to a continual burn rate after launch which most publishers won't go for as the returns just aren't as easily predictable when you're looking at slowing a tail. (the drop in sales revenue after launch spike)

Mebh
May 10, 2010

I think it's mostly expectations. I'm pretty sure it was planned to be a game as a service but got changed at the last minute to see what would happen. With no store or DLC to monetize your hardcore players the revenue just goes down down down.

The retail sales more than made up for it and just letting it die now is probably the most profitable solution because pve support post launch is a bloody nightmare and nobody can guarantee they know how to do it. Hell, I wouldn't!

Warframe is still the only PvE game punching in the weight class of the big PvP battle titles and it's honestly impressive as hell how they slowly grew it over the years and nurtured it without completely loving it up.

I had hoped this would go that way, I really had, then I could alternate between the two when I got tired. It's just such a drat shame.

Still, they might surprise us and I'll definitely check in the second there's a content patch.

Why would they make a content patch though?

I don't see the business case for it.

A $20 DLC - may have the desired ROI, but a content patch for a game with 0 monetization outside of the initial purchase doesn't seem like anything but a waste of effort.

Yeah it's a bit unlikely but there's a million ways they could turn it around and its never too late to add live ops. Especially if they do lots of small dlcs.

Every indication says that's not going to happen though. Still I'll keep an eye on it as I want to play this game more. Just no point right now.

I'm waiting for a few rounds of fixes and then my friends group will give it another whirl. I still want to get my dev and trickster CT15 viable as getting my pyro and techno there despite all the bugs was a good bit of fun.

Just not really willing to grind it out by myself. Not good for my liver!

Mebh
May 10, 2010

That's the worst bit. The story was good... The gunplay was good. The classes and the skill and weapon modification were a cracking good start.

Even the progression unlock rate was decent. Yeah it could have been smoother but there was plenty to do and I really enjoyed the side quests along the way.

Then it just poo poo the bed so hard in single player and multiplayer at the end game and was like they stopped development entirely. It's maddening.

I absolutely got my moneysworth and don't regret it at all but drat it had the potential with so few changes to be a thousand hour game not a hundred hour one.

Mebh

I genuinely have no idea what they're playing at. It's just loving bizzare.

The only thing I can think of is some weird dictat from on high stopping them tinkering with balancing in any way.

The fact that Tiago still hasnt rotated is just bonkers.

Mebh
May 10, 2010

It'll be really interesting to see the player numbers after the patch. A lot of industry vets insist you can never add live ops stuff too late and favour bug fixing and stability over content for a lengthy period if you had a good spike of initial players. I think they're nuts.

I'm pretty sure outriders isn't ever going to recover as that only really applies if you have a good end game loop, great repeatable pvp and don't take nearly an entire year in one of the most competitive genres for attention.

Dev was entirely fine and still is. You also feel ridiculously stompy. My partner's main was a tanky/cc/damage boost Dev. while a buddy and I were DPS nerds and she basically spent her time soaking damage, ccing, smashing faces and picking us up off the floor when we hosed up and exploded because we were both glass cannons.

Just with the balance it wasn't quite reliably sustainable except on two maps at CT15 until we got some more gear, which just never dropped for her or my friend and they both just kinda fizzled after the 50th run of stargrave/archways where if we tried much else we risked a silver. Don't blame them at all. I didn't last much longer.

Now with all the rng fixes, guaranteed loot and no timer we could easily have kept playing way longer with much more variety of maps to keep us entertained and geared up/tried more builds/classes.

I'd like to hear a retrospective on what happened. Was it COVID leaving them unprepared for proper post-launch support? Or just bad planning?

My theory is they had a contract for x amount of money with the publisher to produce y game. Plus a contract for x money over y months for support post launch. At some point in development that post launch contract was pulled or reduced significantly. Possibly due to cross platform being a hellpit (mostly thanks to Sony being bastards) Unreal, if you don't extremely have experienced devs being awful bloatware with so many game breaking issues and abilities to wreck your poo poo and xbox throwing them money for gamepass causing feature creep like mad.

At launch they likely had a spaghetti codebase from the above, little to no tools and very little money for anything but fixes with a skeleton crew. Then everything they fixed broke 3 other things and players started losing data.

They likely had internal design momentum from a fairly senior person to go a certain way, probably from old pillars set down years ago, thus the early off the wall nerfs that caused a huge amount of players to churn. (arguing with someone who can point to a key pillar written at the start of dev is a loving nightmare sometimes)

2 months after launch they were hitting up linkedin looking for lead designers with live experience to take over and take the project in hand.

Basically. AAA Gamedev.txt

That and the publisher deal taking all the revshare until development was fully paid for and then some meaning they didn't get paid so couldn't pay their staff. You know, normal games industry things.
