Dear Sungod! After Anthem and Division 2 I will once again follow you into a bad game and will keep playing it, long after more reasonable goons have abandoned ship.

May you shine your light on this and future trash games, while I humbly don my mantle as your deranged prophet, offering up bad gifs to praise your glory.

From what I read about Outriders the real bread and butter of the game are the 195 weapon and gear mods, that the game supposedly has and that can be switched around freely per crafting (once you found and deconstructed an item that has them). Just too bad that we don't get to see any of that and after Anthem, Division 2, Avengers, Godfall (which I luckily dodged) and Cyberpunk I have zero reason to trust any "Our game will have ...." talk.

What I have seen so far, is a really bland cover shooter, that also allows you to be an on-tap space wizard. The fun part was, that it started out as a splendid space adventure (me :"Oh nice, I'm gonna explore this alien planet with my bff ICR) and 10 minutes later the game drops you into something that looks as if Hellraiser and The Battle of the Somme had been put into a blender. And the best/worst part is that our dummy protagonist goes on with their snarky humor, almost unaware of the shell shocked remains of humanity and the mountains of corpses - how is anyone even still alive?

Division 2 and Gears of War did the cover mechanics much better and more crisp.
Anthem, especially the Colossus, could be played way more aggressively.
Destiny 2 had much better design in general.

And all of these games looked a lot better than Outriders and did not constantly load cut scenes for things like "jump over a small gap". At times the game gives me the impression of "Young developer's first game with the Unreal engine". The only reason to play this in April, is that no new loot shooters will be out for a long time, they picked an opportune moment for release. For me, personally, the game will stand or fall with the depth of it's loot pool and if characters can be built in multiple fun and unique ways.

That's pretty much it. You only start getting mods right at the end, and it's only one mod, and I haven't seen a way to change them around on gear. I give a lot of poo poo to Division 2 due to how it started and how I left it, but in that sweet spot in the middle it was a great bit of fun chasing that one amazing gun with XYZ stats on it. That's what I'm looking for here. Give me a bunch of unlocks, a constant need to have more dakka, a reasonable path to get said dakka, and that's enough for me.

All I really got from the demo is someone thought they were making a very AAA cinematic game and somehow managed to cast Bro McDouche as the male lead voice.

Also I've only played the Devastator and Pyromancer so far but it feels like they really locked the best poo poo behind the final four skills. Chalk up another thing the demo is bad at.

All the blue stuff you find has a mod and supposedly they get saved when you deconstruct them. But since we cannot craft in the demo there's a bit of a "maybe" attached to that.

I have found 3 gear pieces which give various buffs to the Technomancer's shrapnel mine - an extra charge, bigger radius and activation range and more damage. This turned a skill that seemed kinda meh at first, into a very useful one.

What I find weird is that they supposedly have 15 endgame expeditions, they should have let us play one of these with a pre-generated character. Anthem at least allowed us to play the dungeon with the spider boss.

So being winter and my country still under semi-lockdown I did some of that loot cave grinding yesterday, while watching movies. I don't recommend doing the loot cave, the drop rate is below 1%, unless you're a video game doofus like me.

Why am I posting this? Cause 2 of the 3 legendaries I found don't seem to work.

Let's start with the one that does work and is probably the best of the bunch, the Voodoo Matchmaker. Part of your damage goes to another enemy in range and Vulnerable seems to be a good mod on top. This is nice for quickly clearing packs.

https://i.imgur.com/NWYgEIT.mp4
I used the time bubble here and single shots, for better visibility.

https://i.imgur.com/3Caq74c.mp4
Next is, the Migraine. Supposedly this should turn enemies into bombs when they die, but it never happens. Headshot kills also don't to trigger it.

https://i.imgur.com/zOAKYgT.mp4
I don't see any anomaly bombs here...

https://i.imgur.com/Z2YekYY.mp4
And last we have the Grim Marrow, an lmg which should spawn a singularity when a baddie dies.

https://i.imgur.com/Im5VNmn.mp4
When you hit something with the Grim Marrow, they briefly glow blue, but that's the Slow effect from the second mod. No singularities here...

https://i.imgur.com/iWhLMIQ.mp4
That's it so far, I'm probably not gonna dump more hours into the loot cave or the demo. Couple pages ago I said that the game will stand or fall with the depth of it's loot pool, only to find out that 2 of the 3 legendary guns I found so far, are about as useful as a Humongous or Wormwood in vanilla Diablo 3. I'm gonna repost this on Reddit later, for more range, cause lovely legendaries, demo or not, are a bad sign.

Isn't grim marrow the legendary they've been using in the marketing as the example of what legendaries are like in this game? lmao

I think it was among the previewed ones, yes.

Update on the Migraine, I actually got it to proc - the mod description on the gun is all wrong. The anomaly bomb is not a guaranteed effect every 3 seconds (on kill), but a very low % chance to proc every 3 seconds. Which makes it useless, since you want the bomb to go off in the middle of a pack, but most of the time either nothing, or the wrong baddie, will explode.

Trickster completely clowns on the guy. Teleport in and shotgun him in the face with Twisting Bullets within your Time Bubble. When he teleports out, switch to a longer range gun and keep closing the distance, as soon as Twisted Bullets come off cooldown he's toast.

What I noticed is that enemies in this game have way stronger impact reactions to your skills, compared to games like Division or Destiny. Keeping them staggered is the key to success. You don't want to hide til your skill come off cool down.

When melee baddies want to hit you, dont back away and kite them like in other games. Instead get in their face and hit them with your own, faster, melee attack. This works surprisingly well with any class.

Time for a little contest:

If ICR reaches max level with a single character within the first month of the game and has said character reasonably well equipped for that level (let's say ~2 legendaries), then I will Steam-gift a single copy of this game to a goon who is still undecided on May 1st. Just finished the campaign and will dive into the endgame over the Easter holidays. I skipped most side missions for later and focused on the main story, at the end of which I was level 27. So you don't need to be worried that you might finish the campaign underleveled if you skip content.

For me the game was a real palate cleanser after the disappointment that was Cyberpunk. The game never tries to be more than what was advertised and has very solid foundations. Here's my mini review:

Story: From the demo we thought it would keep going with the tongue-in-cheek teenage humour. And then I was very pleasantly surprised to notice that the main story ramps up later and gets a lot more serious with some surprising twists and events. It also likes to take old tropes and put unexpected twists on them, which freshens things up. There are lighthearted moments, but also more sombre and thoughtful parts and most characters display some growth during the storyline. The main campaign is roughly 18-20 hours, unless you push yourself and it really kept me interested from the time we leave the demo zone to the final mission. And it stays interesting post campaign, cause we want to find out what the Eye of the Storm is all about and deal with some recurring villains.

The world: From the demo I was under the impression that the game would not be that impressive when it comes to graphics. But just like the story it also surprises in that department. Once we leave the first zone we travel through all kinds of biomes, snow covered mountains, volcanoes, WW1 trenches, abandoned cities, jungles and mysterious ruins. And more often than not there are some really good looking areas and lots of variation. Travelling from area to area also helps to create the illusion of a much bigger and open world and thanks to the well timed story pacing we move on before an area starts feeling stale.

Gameplay: Starts out easy, but then the game slowly introduces increasingly nasty baddies that can prove to be quite a challenge, even on lower world tiers. At least that was my experience when playing Trickster as main. In the early game you run around with your temporal blade and the teleport and you feel like a god, and later you run into a boss or a pack of elites that just laugh it off and send you packing. Which is the point where you need to return to the base to adjust your gear and come up with a skill build that counters theirs. A strong point of the character design is that all their skills have their use, especially with the right items. None seem to be just "fillers". On top of that you have tons of mods which should make a lot of different builds possible.

I'm gonna add some thoughts later, when I'm deeper into the endgame. But I really enjoyed Outriders so far. It's not reinventing the wheel, but it's an uncomplicated, fast paced and fun loot shooter with an enjoyable campaign and a surprising amount of depth in character builds.

this game sounds very short if so many of you have finished it less than two days after release with all these connectivity issues.

Each of the campaign hubs has several side missions, hunts and bounties. Some of the side stories are a series of missions, like the one about the Outrider base. You can rush through the main campaign in 15-20 hours, but if you do everything it's a good deal longer. Also once you finish the campaign the game is not over, the last mission is unlocked by doing expeditions and that's gonna take a while.

There is some fun stuff here, like the new guns and their effects. But €39.99 (-10% on Steam) for a 3-4 hour campaign and some new end game maps is very little value for a lot of money. Also there are no new abilities, in the Pax and Ascension systems you just dump points into stuff like "Reduce cooldown by X", or "Increase anomaly power by Y".

Why would you take away all our in game friends? Why wouldn’t Zahedi, Tiago, and Channa go with me on this adventure to save the world? It just makes no sense and really makes the whole game super dreary sad and I really hope… I dunno what they could even change, it definitely really bums me out though. No reason is ever given for why this exile is permanent or why you’d go alone.

Yeah, that's pretty hosed up. Especially considering that I kinda enjoyed the original story.

Almost everyone is dead anyway and the little bubble can barely protect enough territory to sustain a handful of people. And then our main character fucks off to grind loot in the temple, for what purpose exactly?

Would have been easy to fix too. Have a couple more survivors, say that you need to explore the temple to find more crystal shards to build some ultimate thingy that will get rid of the anomaly forever once you hit max apoc rank. Done. Happy End.

Instead we get a cliffhanger ending for a franchise that may never see another sequel or DLC.
