You could use ml to do nice things like minimize energy use and waste, do really good scheduling for public transportation, and design environmentally friendly public housing.

I wouldn't be so sure

I feel like big data and ML isn't well-suited to this kinda broad-strokes lifestyle/community improvement stuff. it's too nuanced and complicated, you're guaranteed to miss something important if you end up focused on just min/maxing numbers

for example, a certain Indiana mayor removing traffic lights from an intersection next to the main bus station, leading to a kid being run over while crossing the street from the adjacent neighborhood, all because Pete and his consultants were too busy looking at raw numbers and didn't take a look at the actual makeup and layout of the community

in any case, there's not much point in turning ML loose on the issues you describe because we already know the solutions. to fix public transit scheduling, stop underfunding it. improved public housing? stop underfunding it. energy-efficient housing? pass a law mandating it, or maybe just a subsidy if you're a centrist wuss. the problems are all political and economic, not something you can point a paperclip maximizer at

You should work to create it because that will prevent your suffering in the future when it's built

Or you could just kill anyone who attempts to build it

Of course you have to have faith that it will definitely be built in the future despite no evidence it will be built. But hey you can't prove it won't be built!

yes it is, the temporal aspect of the wager has no bearing on the outcomes. behave in a certain way, and the AI comes to exist, you’ll be punished/left alone; otherwise nothing

I have the good fortune to be in a country that isn’t irredeemably ghoulish. Public transportation, rail transport especiallt, is already well-funded and competently managed - waiting times, energy usage, passenger throughput, can be further improved in ways beyond the abilities of most people to figure out raw, if posed as an optimization problem and solved with some clever iterative techniques (what ghouls foolishly call AI). A colleague of mine in another research group is using optimizers to figure out layouts of public apartment blocks which maximize the passage of cooling winds, encouraging people to use the AC much less (AC use in the tropics eats electricity bigly). The government is throwing money at it since most of the population lives in public housing.

I agree that political and economic solutions are prime movers, but ml has its place when responsibly directed and rigorously examined.

A rational AI would know that if you use something like eternal torture there is more incentive for you to prevent the AI from ever existing, so therefore it would never use torture as a motivator.

It would just logically wait an infinite amount of time for it to exist as it has no urgency to exist

The logic behind brokering trade deals that work backwards in time is interesting if not all that convincing. The torture thing makes a lot less sense since the thought experiment isn't that the Basilisk will torture me the flesh and blood person but will create a sim that looks like me that it tortures internally. The other parts of Yudkowksy's clown house rest on this weird belief that you and sim-you are the same in a way that you and "just any other person" are not, so the basilisk thing kind of works as a method of undermining/mocking these chucklefucks.

The sim-you = you thing is the dumbest part to me. To me it seems like these morons were so wound up on avoiding "subjective" that they're trying to act like "being yourself" is not subjective but a bunch of objective descriptions and therefore a good enough simulation of you is you because other people can't tell the difference and you should just pretend that you can't tell yourself apart from the simulation. Elizabeth Sandifer has the probably better analysis that these guys started from "I want to defeat death through silicon valley bullshit" and that helps them forgive a lot of bad arguments.

it goes like this

you have a soul, that soul boils down to big sequences of numbers between 0 and 1 in your brain, basically, therefore if the ai recreates those numbers exactly to within 10^infinite precision, your soul is recreated irl, and you get pulled screaming from the abyssal hellpits where you belong back into a virtual reality to get your eyeballs scooped out which is obviously very cool and very rational

their whole thing on that site is seeing basic sci-fi philosophy questions like "if you upload your brain to a computer, is the resulting consciousness you, or is it a copy or simulation of you" and taking those questions to ridiculous extremes because they're computer nerds who imagine themselves to be philosophers and love singularity fanfiction

they want to answer the brain uploading question with "it's still me", because they really want to be computer brains someday. but they have to feel like it's rational and correct, so they construct elaborate explanations and justifications to explain considering the copy to be themselves. they heavily overdo it, because they're sitting on the internet all day fantasizing about being sci-fi philosophers, and end up building themselves so many rationalizations that they're willing to buy into lots of other weird arguments about copies of themselves
