I know this isn't the thread for Josscussion, but can I just take a second to complain about the super hacky bit where the newscaster eyerollingly mocks the abducted janitor's wife as she "claims" he was taken by aliens? It's all very "get a grip, lady" and wouldn't be terribly out of place (except for its middle school news production value) in real life, but I'm forced to assume that the very next story in that newscast was "the world continues to mourn the alien demigod who came to this planet and successfully defended it against the invasion of other aliens." Why would this version of earth still look at alien stuff as kooky wacko poo poo?

edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm_REX42gC4 in case you don't know what I'm referring to
Also, Lois, who was recently having unprotected sex with an alien man, and is known for doggedly pursuing stories of note and import, casually mutes said newscast and dismissively ignores it in order to have a conversation with the adoptive mother of her extraterrestrial boyfriend

This is even more off topic, but this scene also reminded me of Independence Day, and even after the aliens show up and start blowing up the world, and even after it's shown that the Roswell crash actually happened and the US military knew aliens have been visiting Earth for 50 years, people still act like Randy Quaid's character is nuts for saying he was abducted by aliens.

And I know that's like not even the worst poo poo that Whedon did, but spiting your own movie is summtin.

I feel like part of it might be that even in the Josstice cut, Snyder was still credited as director. I know casual moviegoers who aren't terminally online like us, who were confused at the Snyder Cut movement because they just assumed that Snyder had done the movie since his name was there. I have to imagine that gave a bit of cushioning to Whedon (especially given some of the stuff in these various stories about him seemingly enjoying destroying Snyder's work).

Actually, I'm curious - did Whedon ever make comments on Man of Steel or BvS or anything else Snyder has done before being tapped for Justice League? A quick Googling shows Whedon in 2014 saying he hadn't seen MoS yet but that he was going to watch it as homework for Age of Ultron (lol) but I wonder if he jumped on any of the typical Snyder takes beforehand.

AFAIK it was in production before Whedon got hardcore dragged, his name has been scrubbed from the project (I think?), and he has a solid record when it comes to television (and its a medium where his significant shortcomings as a director can be handwaved)

I mean, he made two shows that were successful (and one of those was a spinoff of the first) while his third and fourth shows were legendary bombs.

Depressing reactions to the story on Twitter. People who felt "Black Panther is honestly so important, Chadwick Boseman is a true visionary" are turning around and going "Who the gently caress does Fisher think he is, that he's too good for 'booyah'?" As if he has no right to ownership over his character, his portrayal on screen, or his artistic reputation, or that the way he was treated has nothing to do with his race. Once again, the people who think they're too smart for Snyder movies demonstrate that they really are not.

It's especially telling given you'd think the people who just accept at face value "Disney = woke kings, DC = alt-right Nazi edgelords" would see supporting Fisher as fitting right into their worldview. I think the stumbling block is Whedon.

I'm kind of surprised people aren't trying to claim that it was the DC culture which turned Whedon evil or something.

Ayn Rand hypocritically collected Social Security. Therefore Snyder's blind worship of her is in fact secret proof that he supports a New Deal welfare state.

Let's be real here, if Wagner was alive today he'd be a Hollywood director, and not only due to his antisemitism

There's some John Williams interview I remember where he talks about how if Mozart lived today, he would be the biggest Hollywood composer there is.

To be fair, Brandon Routh was insanely correct casting for "Christopher Reeve Superman but in 2006."

Ironically, Routh won the role over Henry Cavill, who was originally cast when McG was supposed to direct the movie. Cavill also was the second choice for Bond in Casino Royale and Edward in Twilight. That had to have been a frustrating string of near misses for him (well, maybe not so much for Superman Returns).

His take on Brokeback Mountain:

https://twitter.com/bendreyfuss/status/1381551142098894850

Given he's Richard Dreyfuss' son I figured he had to be like in his 50s or something, but no, he's 34 and his only career before taking on Mother Jones was a handful of bit acting roles.

It's easy to dunk on him but really other than the fact that it's a legacy publication it's no different from the scores of YouTube "movie critics" who are like 17, or the people who go write for AV Club straight out of college.

Remember the Batman/Superman movie poster teased in I Am Legend? I wonder if that played a small role in shaping up expectations. (Just realized that Will Smith would eventually be face to face with Batman a few years later too).

Written by Akiva Goldsman, who also put the Superman reference in Batman & Robin.

I remember a long time ago some interview with Goldsman about him putting that sign into I Am Legend and him wanting to do a Batman & Superman movie for years, but have no idea where that was by this point. Thought it might be The Death of Superman Lives but looking it up again and he wasn't in it.

Let's get back to the meat of the topic: that the MCU is in the midst of a film world-historical run (on the aggregate).

We know it's monumentally successful financially, but what notable ideas has it contributed to superhero stories through the medium of film? What will its legacy be?

In all honesty I think one of the biggest ideological contributions of the MCU is helping push ecofascism through the meme that "Thanos was right," something which people immediately started repeating in earnest even before the pandemic.

Mirror Master is going to be Nicholson Joker's daughter, isn't she? She kinda looks like Nicholson, and it would be a parallel to the Batman Unchained unproduced movie where Harley Quinn was Nicholson-Joker's daughter.

Well thank you for replying to my old post, I hadn't thought about that in a while. Plus I was very wrong that Indy didn't have merch, because there was literally comic books and custom Choose-Your-Own-Adventures called Find Your Fate that just slipped my mind. Nonetheless perhaps the muted reaction is because Indy doesn't take place in an alternate world where anything is possible, this locks off people's feelings of wonder and imagination? I don't know, I'm just spitballing. It really is baffling to me what caused one of the powerful contemporaries of Star Wars, a movie that featured one of the same actors even, to just sort of slip into "a good old movie series" instead of "the franchise that defines me, as a person". Maybe because there can only be one of those franchises by definition.

There was Indy merch but even Lucasfilm recognized that it wasn't as strong as Star Wars and tried to pair them together. Back when Dark Horse got the rights to do Star Wars comics, one of the conditions of the deal with Lucasfilm was that they had to do Indiana Jones also (not just had to get the rights, but had to actually print out comics). Notably this was 1990, the year after Last Crusade and a time when Star Wars was at its nadir, and even so they were having to piggyback Indy merch off of Star Wars.
