I use solo games quite a lot both to amuse myself and to try out systems before I run them for other people. It's a good way to try games or explore plots that you won't get to the table. My preferred Oracle system is Mythic with the new V2 oracle; I find its scenes and interrupts methodology works pretty well.

I also sometimes use it as a Character emulator rather than a GM one - there's a game I started here (not finished due to a massive bout of depression :( ) https://forum.rpg.net/index.php?threads/mythic-0d-d-b1-9-in-search-of-adventure.537852/

I have a (sadly neglected atm) blog with my solo games at https://moggynomates.angrymog.com/

There's a really good Pendragon solo (it still gets updated from time to time even though it started in 2011) here at RPG.net

I'd never heard of this kind of solo-playing RPG, but having just tinkered around a little with Ironsworn I'd definitely say it's more of a creative writing exercise or 'structured daydreaming' than it is the typical RPG experience.

Depends how you go about it; sometimes yes, but I feel the mechanics add a layer of unpredictability and makes you react to things that you wouldn't have written without the mechanics, and a lot of write ups include the mechanics - both the host systems and the oracle so people can see how things are put together.

Alex Yari from various solo things has a thing about 'Non-authored solo' where you use generators for every detail rather than filling things in to patch together a narrative.

A lot of the happenings in the Pendragon game I linked are derived from how the characters interact with each other due to their Traits and Passions

I would say that I definately do play solo RPGs in that I interact with the rules of the system, and make decisions based on both those rules and the information provided by the oracles.

In the Ultra Violet Grasslands I've just started I'm using more of a GM stance with the oracle directing the character, but it's very definitely a game first, a creative writing exercise second. People playing the "But is it even a game? Is it Roleplaying?" really ought to look up some write ups of sessions - I've posted some of mine (and a really good Pendragon one), and can go hunt down some other links.

Lots of D&D actually. The idea is that you use it for framing, running NPCs and so forth, then resolve the situation with your host system.

Adventure is more of a GM aid than a solo game system like Mythic; from what I gather it's intended to be used before the session to give you your adventure outlines that you then flesh out.

If I wanted to try and run myself solo through some old published D&D modules or some OSR stuff, what would be a good solo system to use for it? I've seen some recommendations for Scarlet Heroes but all the AP stuff I've found for it so far has been randomly generating a dungeon/adventure rather than adapting it for use with a published module so that hasn't given me a great idea of what that experience would actually be like.

I imagine there'd be a knack to reading enough of a room description to quickly flesh out a map but not read so much that you spoil the twists and traps in a room for yourself and colour your interactions with foreknowledge.

I use Scarlet Heroes for the damage and Defy Death mechanics, and I do read the module first - maybe gamify a few bits (e.g. if it's an investigation I'll add a clue collecting mini-game rather than try to play unspoiled) or work out a flowchart through it, and use Mythic GME to take it off the rails handle NPC reactions and so on.

Here's a writeup of my first Odessy in Four Against the Titans.

Olympos has fallen. War rages between the gods and the titans. The gods are on the back foot and Zeus himself, king of gods and men, has been defeated and imprisoned by the giant Typhon. It is up to the children of the gods – the result of so many promiscuous encounters with mortals – to take up the fight and forestall the destruction of Greece.

Our heroes are Silver-tongued Hylos, son of Aphrodite; Bloody-handed Leona, daughter of Ares, Shadow-wise Iolanthe, daughter of Hekate; and finally, Iron-minded Maro, son of Hades. (nicknames stolen from Agon)

Children of Aphrodite have the ability to reroll encounter reactions and inspire the party; Ares' are ferocious in combat; Hekate's are able to cast a fireball and poison a weapon, and finally Hade's can resurrect another Hero once per odyssey, and gain 2d6 obols whenever they rest in a city.

They start in the city of Mycenae in Argolid - you have an option of five starting cities; I picked this one more or less on a whim and a desire to avoid sea travel just yet.

Long held to be the cultural heartland of Greece, the Argolid has two of civilisation’s finest cities in Argos and Mycenae – the homes of so many Greek heroes. Although suffering occasional satyr attacks coming down from neighbouring Arkadia, the Argolid was relatively peaceful before the coming of the titans.

They've visited the Agora to supplement their starting equipment and buy provisions (Bread, Cheese, and Wine) for the journey. Their first goal is to head straight for the temple of Delphi in the Phokis region. The first leg of their journey will take them to Aitolia. We need to roll on the journeying table and resolve the results until they roll a 5 or 6.

The journey is easy, and it is in high spirits that our band of heroes enter the region of Aitolia.

This rough country in the west of Greece has a fertile coast line, backed by harsh and unproductive mountains. The fields and groves around Kalydon are plagued by a giant boar which tears down grape vines and attacks farmers in their fields.

Upon entering a new region we roll on the Region table, and resolve that before travelling on. You can also choose to stay in a region and explore it more - this is the way to get to cities if your first roll didn't give you the city.

The band disturb a group of 5 nymphs (L3, normal treasure) who take offence to the group trespassing into their grove and attack. (They could also have invited the party to rest, or run away)

Hylos looses a sling stone, which doesn't do enough damage to knock out any of the Nymphs, and then the party has to defend; Hylos and Leona get hit (Leona is being attacked by two of them).

In the heroes turn, Hylos swops to his dagger, whilst the other three attack.

After a couple more rounds the nymphs are down; Leona took a bit of a beating (down to 4 life), but finished the fight by slaying the last two herself.

The Nymphs have normal treasure - three obols. The group could explore the region, but want to get a move on and so try to head off into the Phokis region.

Along the road they encounter another traveller, a man named Lethos, who offers them payment (Treasure +1) if they can escort him to Delphi (The NPC always wants to go to the next city the characters get to, so there's no reason not to accept), and since they're heading that way, the heroes accept. Lethos has three life, and will not take part in combat (but can be attacked)

The rest of their journey is uneventful, and they arrive in Phokis.

Centred around the great oracular sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi, the central region of Phokis attracts pilgrims from across the Greek world and beyond. Wedged between Boiotia and Thessaly, its byways also fall prey to the ravages of maenads and centaurs, while the great serpent Python has laid siege to the sanctuary itself.

The roads are quiet as the party travel towards Delphi, but the news from other travellers is grim; there's no getting around it, they'll have to free the city from the serpent before they can enter. They stop for a picnic (restoring 1 health to everyone) before continuing.

The second roll on the region table brings the group to Delphi. The lands around the city are a poisoned wasteland, and it doesn't take them long to track down the serpent.

Hylos uses his sling to no effect, and then Python attacks; Leona is able to defend, but both Iolanthe and Maro are wounded by the Titan, though neither succumb to its poison.

Python is Level 5, has 3 life, 3 attacks, and if wounded a hero must roll 4+ on a d6 or take an extra wound due to poison. If Python slain, the heroes will be rewarded with the Bow of Apollo.

Hylos uses his Charismatic ability, granting the other heroes +1 to their next attack or defence roll, whilst Iolanthe applies poison (+1d3 wounds) to Leona's spear.

Leona attacks and hits, doing 1 damage from her spear, and another two from the poison. The great snake is slain, and there is rejoicing in the city of Delphi, and the Heroes are gifted with the bow of Apollo for slaying the Titan, which Hylos claims.

Lethos obviously doesn't approve of his front row seat to the titan fight, as all he offers the party is a loaf of bread.

For this visit resting in the inn is free, which heals everyone for two points and resets their Per Odyssey powers.

Finally, for slaying the Titan and escorting Lethos to Delphi, the group have two level up chances, which are given to Hylos and Leona, both of whom succeed.

All rested, the heroes travel to the temple of Apollo to seek its Blessing. The High Priest (Life 4) seeks an escort to the city of Amydon in Paiona; the journey will take them through Thessaly and Epeiros.

It's far more like a boardgame in play than an RPG, though you could certainly narrative it up. It is fun to see what challenges the heroes face, and discover whether they'll succeed in the overall quest. The main decisions you take are what route to follow, and when to use your abilities.

Combat seems too manageable.

In Four against the Titans, the base level of everything you fight goes up as your party average level goes up, which keeps it harder. Also there's the Titan battles. I haven't lost a hero in my game, but it's been close at times.

I tried out the current version of Dead Belt - https://acoupleofdrakes.itch.io/dead-belt - to decide if I wanted to back the kickstarter for the expanded version. Below is short, sad tale of Mizzy Random, wanna be ship salvager.

Mizzy Random, down on her luck scoundrel needed both money and to stay away from people for a while. How hard could salvaging be?

The airlock of her temporary ship, the 'Any Port' connected up to the side of the civilian transport she'd located. A small ship, but hopefully one with something worth pulling from it.

The airlock had attached to the galley - not glamourous, but someone would want to buy it. (5 of diamonds, load 5); heartened by the this early success, Mizzy moved on. The next module however had been stripped so clean that she wasn't even sure what it had been; she wasn't the first person here, and it looked like the earlier crew had really known what they were doing. Mizzy swore, headed back to the galley and started loading her ship.

This was the 10 of spades - Picked over. I could have spent a point of grit to turn that into a mixed success which would have made all salvage worth half, but decided to just call it off and pull the galley stuff out.

Stowing the gear was going to take some time - this wasn't money for nothing after all; these chips wouldn't be free. (Rolled 4-5 on the airlock move, and chose to check my gas). The second trip to get the remainder of the galley fittings went well enough until it was time to try and shove everything into the Any Port. Realising that the items could be a danger if allowed to slide around the ship, Mizzy had to use up time and gear to secure it in her hold. (1-3 on the airlock move this time, chosing to test gas again, and spend a point of gear)

Returning to the salvage yards, it was time to cash in and chat to the creditors. The 'bank' were not amused and made it clear that the amount she owed was only going up unless she had a better run soon. (Rolled a 1, and debt went up to 5), nor was she able to avoid paying upkeep on the ship. After drowning her sorrows, Mizzy went to the breakers and spend 3 of the remaining 4 cred on a supply bank for the ship. It increased the upkeep by 1, but would hopefully be worth it in the future.

Ship two.

Another day, another small civillian transport.

It wasn't an auspicious start. The module that she'd chosen to attach to wasn't the most stable, and the impact of the airlock had made it nothing more than a gap with a bit of superstructure attached. (10 clubs - spacewalk, and then the module is removed and is just a gap).

Something goes horrifically wrong, a push off at the wrong moment sends Mizzy tumbling through the emptyness of space and away from both the wreck and her own ship. A few hours later, as her visor starts to frost up and her vision dims, her last thought is, "Well, gently caress."

Rolled badly on the spacewalk subtable, and foolishly didn't spend grit to turn it into a mixed result. Then drew two black cards. The second spacewalk roll was a mixed success, in which I drew my third black card, which means death.

RIP Mizzy Random, lost in the vastness of space.

I'll try another game in a bit and hopefully they'll last longer. I made some bad decisions with whether to spend resources or not; Mizzy could probably have survived the spacewalk if I'd spent a grit to turn that first failure into a mixed result.
