Rush Limbaugh, the monumentally influential media icon who transformed talk radio and politics in his decades behind the microphone, helping shape the modern-day Republican Party, died Wednesday morning at the age of 70 after a battle with lung cancer, his family announced.

Limbaugh's wife, Kathryn, made the announcement on his radio show. "Losing a loved one is terribly difficult, even more so when that loved one is larger than life," she said. Rush will forever be the greatest of all time."

hate to be a debbie downer, but i gotta tell ya, giving this more thought throughout the day, i don't think today's as a celebratory day as it should have been.

rush died, sure. and he died of lung cancer, which i hear is a pretty unpleasant way to go. at first i was chuckling at the irony of him dying from such a thing while spending years smoking cigars and going to bat for the tobacco industry. but the guy lived to be 70. he had a long, comfortable life, unfortunately. he had a job doing what he loved, became a multimillionaire, and had the respect and praise of some of the most powerful people in the world.

while rush was infinitely more of a force in conservative politics, i felt herman cain's death was way, way funnier. i mean, the guy died trying to impress trump, and not only killed himself, he wound up actually embarrassing trump, the one thing he was trying to avoid doing, thus making his death all the more pointless (and hilarious). and yeah, cain lived about as long as rush (74), but unlike rush, he actually beat his cancer, only to die needlessly from a completely self-inflicted wound.

so basically, while it is objectively good and a net positive for the world that rush died, his death isn't exactly the cathartic moment it should have been.

but hopefully he's suffering in hell, at least

Herman Cain was wrong about a lot of things, important things, he certainly harmed a lot of people, but I think for the most part didn't know what he was doing and was greedy, but greedy in a way that most people are and would be if they fell into his life.

Rush, like Trump, was cruel and evil because it entertained him, his show hasn't been a profitable enterprise in years, he was just a dying cat batting around a mouse for fun. Rush chose to spend his last moments on earth, fully knowing that they were his last moments on earth, by intentionally yammering on and on the radio, harming people instead of a yacht in Monaco being sucked off by prostitutes high as gently caress on cocaine, because being malevolent was the only real joy he was capable of.

I hope his hospice nurse was a fat, trans, black, same-sex married, woman that was mean to him in his last moments.

oh for sure. while i am firmly ACAB (All Conservatives Are Bad), cain never seemed as malicious as rush, and seemed to embrace his more goofy side (hence why he was my choice for republican presidential nominee in 2012 :911: ). while i'm not going to go on a quest to revive cain with the dragonballs, i do feel there were plenty of other republicans who should have gotten to the front of the line first

the Paper of Record decided to give the cool kid's philosopher(tm) writing space to lament about the death of rush. most of it is just ben gushing about how influential and awesome rush was, and it would normally be unremarkable if it wasn't for this part:

quote:

But the left’s hatred of Rush was not merely the result of anything in particular he did or said, but rather the product of liberals’ generalized scorn for anyone who opposes them.

If Rush had been less caustic, the left still would have popped the champagne upon his death, just as they would have if Sean Hannity had died this week, or Tucker Carlson, Mark Levin or any other prominent conservative the left didn’t perceive as an ally of convenience.

"the Left CLAIMS they hated rush for being a piece of poo poo, but they would have done the exact same thing had any of these other fine, non-Rush-like individuals also died :qq: "

It's interesting how he says Rush is hated not for "anything in particular he did or said" because a friend of mine pointed out the other day that the people who loved Rush can't name a particular thing he said or did that they loved. He had no big memorable interviews, no famous bits to go back and laugh about later, no big philosophical argument that he'd been making all that time--nothing.

He spent decades on the radio talking to millions of people every single day, and he never said anything that mattered to anyone.

lol

it really is interesting. virtually none of rush's defenders will ever come to specifically defend any of the lovely things he did. you know, the stuff he's actually KNOWN for. but rest assure, the man deserved all the praise he received for...whatever he did. :911:

Also lmao Rush Limbaugh died :destiny:

Baby Joe Rogan was pretty insufferable on Bill Maher back in 2000. Admittedly, the whole show was insufferable, but his interjections against the socialist candidate are particularly stupid on this panel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJJpz3vLImw

wow...lots going on in that video:

- maher looking like a sleazy car salesman wearing an ill fitted suit, hosting a talk show with that obnoxious, 90s jazz music
- literally everyone that panel being insufferable except the socialist guy
- the audience being surprisingly enthusiastic about the socialist guy from the 90s(!)
- rogan being way more opposed to socialism than he is now
- maher apparently actually being a libertarian and not just using that as an identifier years later
- people just not shutting the gently caress up

there's one or two more things but i can't recall at the moment and don't want to rewatch it :barf:

Just reminding people Rush died in agony, in case anyone is having a tough day and needs a laugh.

i hope to god you're right, but a quick google search turns up:

quote:

Lung cancer metastatic to the liver can interfere with the liver's ability to do its job of removing toxins from the body, causing a buildup that can lead to death. This is usually painless, as people slowly become less alert.

Lung cancer can sometimes spread to the pericardium, which surrounds the heart. This may cause bleeding between this lining and the heart, resulting in compression of the organ and sudden, rapid—although painless—death

However, Rush was addicted to painkillers, opioids specifically IIRC, so that whatever they gave him likely had little or no ameliorating effect on his pain because he'd already built up a very strong tolerance :eng101:
