Lol read through some of the thread and was glad to see how many other people had the exact experience of beating the first boss with one character left alive with like 3 HP, now that's what I call tuning.

I guess if people can answer a yes/no question in spoilers -- does the game let you acknowledge any S-Links/romances from the original game?

What determines which Persona skill is used for a given combo finisher?

I wish there was a practice arena or something lol, I can sense that that combat can get pretty intricate and technical but it is pretty overwhelming when you're in the "thick of it" lol, to process everything I'm often just hovering on the edge of the battle and spending a lot of time in the menu. I also keep forgetting to use my aimed shots, leaving damage on the table...

Yeah I think the dilemma they set up with Jail 3 is actually pretty interesting what would you do to hold onto power when you know everyone else around you is worse and then even for the whole Jail the snow theming resonates with a bunch of aspects of the story, and then whoops grotesque fat lady eats you... writers shrugging and going uh politics is eat or be eaten, does that work

Based on the recipe card here, freestyled a bit: https://www.gameinformer.com/2021/02/19/making-leblanc-curry-from-persona-5

I did it all in one pot to save on cleanup and concentrate flavors, I didn't have apple so instead kept the carrot in chunks (it was plenty sweet without it, in a good way), swapped some of the spices. I had to the keep the "LeBlanc" theming so there was a splash of coffee in the final reduction.

This was drat good, the balance was between sweet and spicy-salty, which worked really well. I am looking forward to the other half tomorrow since curry develops additional traits when refrigerated.

...is that why it is a Persona food...?

"Joker's Kitchen", Okinawa edition

CharlieFoxtrot posted:

The base recipe is here: https://www.justonecookbook.com/okinawa-soba/ but I didn't have half of that stuff so I did my best to substitute while keeping the spirit lol

Meat was beef stewed in sake, soy sauce, and maple syrup (!) (I don't have black sugar...) whisked with enough water to cover in my instant pot, 25 minutes pressure cooked then on the stove reduced until some sauce clung to the meat.
Soup was chicken broth, a splash of soy sauce and dash of salt. Brought to a boil, tossed in some shrimp, and after a few minutes reduced the heat and stirred in some kondashi powder.
Noodles: I have tons of ramen noodles and nothing else lol. Dreaming of the day I can go to the Asian grocer soon...
Finished with chopped scallions, I don't have pickled red ginger but I sliced up some sushi ginger

The flavor and texture of the meat was really good, and the soup was exactly as Ann described

CharlieFoxtrot posted:

Speaking of persona 5 memes...

Sushi rice, Canadian bacon (Okinawa or Hawaii would have spam), egg whisked with a mirin/cornstarch slurry, and a spread of miso butter. I did the "TikTok wrap" that is covered in this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bYPG5yUIas

Served with miso soup and beer from Okinawa. I devoured it instantly, the slight sugariness of the sushi rice and mirin melded really well with the salt of the canbac and miso butter

Nice series you have going there, Okinawa soba is great and Orion beer is a nice touch.
Not sure if you are able to get the ingredients there, but if you end up making goya champloo be sure to soak the bitter melons in water for 10-30 minutes to remove some of the bitter flavor depending on your tastes. Otherwise it will be pretty awfully bitter. I love it when normally cooked but had a pretty bad one once at a restaurant where they probably didn't soak it at all.

Thanks! Hmm I wasn't considering that recipe but now... I'll have to see if it's in the local store, or I might have to wait until I can get to the Asian grocer.

I grew up with my mom cooking with bitter melon all the time and I guess never soaked it so I developed an aversion, I should probably give it a shot again with this new knowledge lol

I mentioned this elsewhere but I can understand the structure of the first three Jails in that light, Ann and especially Haru were basically bit players in the P5 palace storylines they were attached to, so giving them more screen time and plots that centered them was good.

Joker's Kitchen, endgame edition:

CharlieFoxtrot posted:

This is the "endgame" Persona 5 Strikers recipe:

I used this recipe Grilled Skirt Steak With Mojo Marinade Recipe with a chimichurri of olive oil, lime juice, and minced garlic/chile/parsley/cilantro/shallot. The side was this: The Best Crispy Roast Potatoes Ever Recipe (the title is accurate, rosemary/chili/garlic oil roast and then tossing them in the bits afterwards is power)

I could have dialed in the steak a little bit better (with a wet marinade there's only so much I can do in terms of browning, and this was on stovetop) but it still turned out juicy and good. (Yes I cut with the grain for the photo, I cut across when actually eating lol)

The sauce was good, but I have a ton of it left, I also have a bunch of fresh cilantro and parsley I have to use up lol

CharlieFoxtrot posted:

Their replacements are pretty cool, though. And by that I mean recipes:

I have been worried about working with raw fish in the past but I was inspired by wuggles' discord sushiposting to give it a shot. Osaka sushi is made flat in a mold, which I don't have. I also don't have a sushi mat for the normal rolls, so I went with a hand roll (temaki).

Ahi yellowfin tuna. The sashimi and nigiri cuts I tried reminded me that I need to sharpen my knives lol. The hand roll featured sushi rice, the ahi tossed with scallion greens and the chimichurri (olive oil, lime juice, parsley, cilantro) from my previous churrasco recipe, tamago (egg prepared with dashi, soy sauce, mirin -- my rolling was whatever lol), then carrot slivers and daikon sprouts. A dollop of spicy mayo (mayo mixed with sweet habanero Cholula) to top it off (also used on the nigiri)

The rice was very good. I had enough of all the ingredients left over that I tossed them into a bowl and also had poke on the side lol

Joker's Kitchen, New Game+ Edition
wherein I revisit some of the key recipes of the game:

CharlieFoxtrot posted:

Previously on Persona 5 Strikers:

New Game+ attempt:

Apparently Okinawa soba doesn't use "buckwheat soba" but they have a special governmental exemption to keep calling it soba. Instead they use flat udon noodles, which is exactly what I was able to get lol. Subbed shrimp for fishcake like last time, replaced the braised pork belly with sweet Italian sausage (this was good), the thin chicken broth with dashi was the right lightness for this

CharlieFoxtrot posted:

Previously on Persona 5 Strikers:

My "New Game +" recipe run continues with revisiting Sapporo ramen, which is miso-based.

Getting closer, the additions this time: sauteed corn topping, daikon sprouts, and the traditional pat of butter for artery-clogging richness. Kimchi for the red, parsley and cilantro for the green (I have somehow almost used up the two big bunches I bought a while ago lol)

I hadn't thought much of corn as a topping (even though I know there's usually a couple of kernels in Cup Noodles) but it is really nice when slurping up the soup, the mouthfeel (along with the butter which always improves it lol) was excellent

CharlieFoxtrot posted:

Previously on Persona 5 Strikers:
(minor curry-related spoilers)

The LeBlanc Curry recipe is a solid one. It doesn't have potato though -- putting that in adds starch to make it rich and thick; I basically went until all the onion and most of the potato had completely dissolved. Because of that I also left the carrots as chunks to sit alongside the beef. The flourish of chocolate and coffee in the reduction works extremely well. Rice was garnished with daikon sprouts, chives, and scallion greens. Paired with this Dorcha Extra Stout which I got because it had coffee beans on the can lol... also I am going to be eating this curry all weekend

Man, I have loved my time with this game. Even beyond how it just hits home so hard personally (something about reconnecting with old friends and being able to go around and hang out in new places and eat new food...) the gameplay and story is just so solid here. Easily going to make my GOTY list for sure
