Harrow posted:I sort of wonder if Atlus is going to avoid showing the Persona 4 and 5 casts as adults specifically because, with those games' protagonists still around, it becomes hard to show their future lives without potentially alienating players who identified with their versions of the protagonists. Anime adaptations and spin-offs that have them still as teenagers are one thing--they're going to be mostly the same people you remember, romances are just sort of danced around or teased, that kind of thing. But showing 20-something Persona 4 characters would require them to commit to a specific version of Yu Narukami as an adult with a specific life path that probably won't match with what players envision their P4 Protagonist would've grown up to be. To be fair the Arena games have already shown they're willing to age up old characters, though I guess P3 has it a bit easier due to its whole situation. I'd say they could just avoid including the protagonists in games featuring future versions of the characters, but I dunno how much people would be into that...

Also, speaking of the game the thread is about, boy it sure is Persona 5-2 in all but name, huh? I didn't expect it to be so much more Persona than Musou but I kinda dig it. I am kind of annoyed that it has a Normal mode that's too easy and a Hard mode that's too hard though.

thebardyspoon posted:I'm finding this pretty rough at points. Like, a fight will seem to be going fine and then within the space of 20 seconds my entire team will be dead and I'll have to slowly whittle down a big enemy as the last person. They seem quite bad at dodging attacks and spunk all their SP very quickly. I'm still early on though and have barely played any musou games so it's very possible I'm doing something wrong in the combat as well of course. It's surprisingly like Persona 5 where if you are in control of a fight it's super smooth but the moment something starts going wrong everything gets hosed up real fast. My personal complaint with the game so far is that there is no downside to leaving the dungeon at checkpoints, which recovers you full HP and SP... So why the gently caress do I have to sit through two loadscreens and several menu transitions instead of just recovering my HP/SP at checkpoints? I guess enemies respawn, but it could just be a menu option in that case.

I mean it's been a whole thing with the entire series since like... SMT1? I never played the MTs so maybe even before that. Alice IS an iconic demon afterall. Japan really loving loves Alice in Wonderland.

ApplesandOranges posted:A few hours in and is Joker the only character that can Ambush from a distance or by running up to enemies? It seems like everyone else has difficulty doing so outside of from vantage points because pressing X just brings up their unique action. He's also clearly the most powerful, but at the same time feels the most gated by SP. I think another annoying part of it is how much you have to pay attention to at any given time. There's character switching, checking to see if anybody got afflicted with a status, checking to see if there's any environment things to take care of, checking to see if anyone is giving you a prompt to switch to them, Showtime, etc. You know every character has guns, right? I'd say Ann is actually ridiculously good against gun weak enemies in this game since you can actually aim her drat SMG this time and it just chews through things. And yeah, ambushing in general is kinda wonky, I try to always do it from a vantage point of some sort because doing it neutral is really hard, you need to be kinda way too close.

Yeah as it turns out I want to retract my statement on Normal being too easy, it's actually just right in terms of difficulty. I just wish I could get into more really big giant crowd fights like the opening one so I could really flex with some of the movesets. Hope there's at least side-content like that.

Morpheus posted:I'm really enjoying the game (through the first three dungeons so far) but there's something about it that's...exhausting? Something like that. I think it's due to having the Persona 5 conceit without the down time between fights and dungeons and such (I mean, there are dialogue scenes but there's no significant gameplay where you get to just walk around town and, I dunno, drink juice or whatever). Just means I find myself taking breaks from it every so often to play other games. Really enjoy the fast-paced combat, though finding it tough to remember various combos and when there are follow ups and whatnot. The tutorial for recipes said you can buy ones you miss from Sophie's shop later, so I think the only stuff you can miss is the city exclusive side quests.

The best part about the second dungeon is playing into the narrative every time you fight a miniboss, much to Ryuji's chagrin.

psychoJ posted:There is unfortunately another hot springs scene later on that kind of rehashes the scene from Persona 3, where the guys are accused of being pervs over a misunderstanding. no homophobia though! Unfortunately it seems like Japan loves that trope far too much. It's in absolutely loving everything, either played straight or subverted in some way. I'm usually against talking broadly about Japan when it comes to stuff that happens in media, but this genuinely seems to be a much beloved trope over there.
