Game is good fun. I'm trying to get good with Yusuke because he's my big fave but naturally one of his big gimmicks is precision counters and I'm Bad.

So it goes, I will persevere.

All the thieves are pretty fun to play though.

You specifically only need to know vanilla P5 because this game doesn't acknowledge any of the extra content from Royal. So if you don't have access to Royal for whatever reason then the vanilla version of P5 is just fine.

Out of curiosity who is everyone's favorite character to pilot so far? I'm still bad with him but I still thoroughly enjoy Yusuke finally being able to thrive as a weeb samurai now that he's not in a turn-based RPG. The counters are immensely satisfying on the rare occasions I land them. Having a free Masukukaja attached to one of his combos is rad too. Also enjoy Ann for her ultra wide combos and her Enchant does stupid poo poo to anything fire weak.

So far I only have one minor gripe of sorts and it's the pacing of the dungeons. It's good that there's a lot of dungeon to go through in each area, they are legit real big and stuff. But the way the game paces you through them just feels bad. Because it does this very video gamey thing like: "Oh the front door is heavily guarded we should find a side route. Oh this side door is blocked by security we should find a way to disable it. Oh the gate to this security area is locked we need a key. Oh this key is guarded too." And so on and so on.

It's just the game directing you all over the dungeon and stuff but it feels intensely annoying at times when I'm just trying to progress and every single thing I run into is "oh we need to find another way".

Especially bad in the 2nd dungeon so far.

I will say though, regarding my earlier gripe. It plays very well into the 2nd dungeon's Monarch and stuff to feel intensely contrived and tedious. Plus everyone rips on it constantly.

What I'm saying is that game is still good.

My insistence on maining Yusuke paid off with the 2nd dungeon boss. My boy was designed to eviscerate that fool. Which makes sense really given the boss.

Also a neat thing I've learned: Once he's gotten his 4th Master Art that can proc Freeze with his repeated strike specials, he can damage enemy shield gauges when that procs if they're ice weak. Pretty nifty feature.

Some quick, spoilery thoughts as I'm starting up the third dungeon:

The first dungeon is pretty good, they do a decent job of ramping up Alice as a threat. Though I was slightly disappointed at her leaning into maniacal villain so quickly in real life, instead of 'her subconscious is rude but her real life likes the treatment but has no idea why people are going crazy for her'. Atmosphere is solid, Ann leans into the head role nicely without overpowering it.

I've seen enough teasers to know Zenkichi is playable, so I'm vaguely curious to see how he gets there. At least his genuine reactions to the Metaverse are funny.

Second dungeon feels... kinda eh? Yusuke takes too much of a central role here I think with some chiming in by Futaba. The villain isn't really that threatening, he only has one town under his 'control' and the height of his own threat just seems to be 'very rude, wants to pick up women'. A book doesn't seem that prolific of a slave-making tool compared to Alice's fashion or an actual mayor, so I dunno. Plus if his writing is actually trash, then... I dunno, the industry isn't really that kind. There's no indication of how his actual writing looks before Prince of Nightmares, so if it's the same kind of hashed together anime tropes then I'm not really buying the 'work hard and you'll be good eventually' story they were trying to sell. Sometimes some people aren't meant to write.

I'm immediately cottoning onto the lady scientist as 'yup, you're evil'. Zenkichi immediately dismissing her as a non-threat, her reaction to Sophie, and her request to see her code. Nothing good is coming from this.

Also, thank you for no perv scene during the bath. Heck, you can even compliment Ryuji on his abs. Keep this up.

With the first two dungeons mirroring the central characters from P5, it's nice to see Haru being the central character going into the third dungeon. I was critical of Haru in P5, but she flows much bettter here in P5S. Her jokes land better ('I'm very handy with an axe' and 'I'm sorry, we just have no trust in the police' and 'My name is Beauty Thief!' are all good). I'll see how this goes.

Also, the music is all very good. The town themes for the second and third towns are both legitimately good, and I like the remix of Last Surprise well enough (though I still prefer Take Over as a general battle theme for this game).

For the 2nd dungeon: They don't really go into but I imagine after countless hours of working his rear end off and immediately getting disqualified in numerous contests he got desperate and started lifting poo poo from elsewhere. Futaba makes a comment that if any of the original source fans caught wind of the lifted stuff they'd immediately riot over it, which emphasizes that hardly anyone was actually paying any real attention to his book and it only got any recognition for the name attached to it and that it won an award. He doesn't really lose it until he learns of the deception, seemingly around the time that EMMA is released and he figures out how it works. At that point even if it was fake recognition he was just glad to be getting any recognition that wasn't just based on his name. I agree it's not as strong as Alice's story though, perhaps because a lot of it is a bit fuzzy and glossed over.

I do like how Yusuke responded to it. He really got to properly shine as a more serious character outside his usual "weird artist friend" schtick, which is always nice to see more of. I admit I'm massively biased though since he's my favorite.

Actually minor correction to my previous post.

I recall one of the party making a quick comment before the warden fight saying that maybe the lovely editors were responsible for the rampant plagiarism in the book. It certainly tracks with their desire to ride Natsume's name to riches. Presumably they doctored up his writing massively to give some believable merit to his rigged award.

I forgot to mention it earlier but I can't believe they found a way to make Blooming Villain go even more hard than the original. It fuckin' slaps in this game.

They do seem to get at least a small percentage of EXP from the bench, but otherwise I just rotate my thieves around every so often.

Another Yusuke Tip: 4x Basic Attack to Special has counter frames while he's winding up for the big huge swing. It's a combo you'll wanna be doing pretty often too anyways because it puts the High Counter buff on him without countering anything. It seems to have a longer window to catch attacks too, I've definitely triggered counters off it a pretty decent amount of the time.

I've hit what is apparently a rather common issue with the PC version. After the scenes that follow the dungeon 5 boss the game gets stuck in an infinite loading screen as you leave the Metaverse. All the potential solutions that other people have found don't work for me.

gently caress I just wanna see the rest of the story damnit. :smith:

They tried to retread the deadly sins theming that the original game had (and did much more successfully.... mostly) and it just kinda doesn't work. The Sendai Jail works but Shibuya & Sapporo are a bit too much a stretch to work. If anything Wrath would've made more sense for Alice than Lust did.

Daredevil plays when you've taken all the cores and go secure the route to the treasure.

Life Will Change plays when you go back up the 2nd time to actually confront the boss.

In the original game the first time they unknowingly activate the navigation app they walk through some streets and alleys on the way to the first palace and it's more of a transition. I think it's just implied that they are navigating in a similar way every other time but they just don't show it. I recall in the first game they would start walking off camera before the wavy load screen effect.

I related to Zenkichi too much because I said very similar things to a younger individual who really, really wanted to go to Law School and become a lawyer, right down to the ":dumb: It'll be all okay!"

Spoilers: It wasn't, don't loving go to law school

So Makoto, take Gramps' advice, don't be a loving cop

I admit I could be wrong on my angle here but I always kinda took it like this: Makoto is working towards being a cop less because she genuinely wants to (though I imagine there still is some genuine desire to follow her dad's footsteps) and more that she wants to incite change from the inside. It's still incredibly naive and in all likelihood it will go as well as you'd expect; she'll probably just get pushed out for trying to speak out against anyone or anything.

Still though I'd like to think if anyone could start wide reform from the inside it'd be her. The combination of her unfathomable stubbornness and having Sae around who is a literal law wizard could actually accomplish some poo poo.

Man this is making me want to get back to the game after being distracted away from it by various things. Except I still have the infinite loading screen bug after the 5th jail boss that I haven't managed to fix.

Fate is cruel.

What's wrong with the game on PC that makes it "unplayable"? All I've heard about have been worse graphics than PS4 (seems based on the Switch version).

The one I've been stuck with is an infinite loading screen after the Jail 5 boss. No way to get past it and none of the fixes floating around have worked for me. Will have to give that thing a try later.

I'm terrible at fighting games but I absolutely want a P5 Arena just to see how all the Phantom Thieves gets translated into a cool badass moveset. Though I don't know how likely it would be to happen.

I mean Strikers already gave them all cool fighting movesets.

Fair enough, although they are somewhat basic compared to what you could design for a fighting game. P4A had some fun looking shenanigans for all the cast to go nutty. Also the big supers.

I'd get p5 arena just because I want more of Zenkichi and Sophia. It was a pleasant surprise that the two new characters ended up being my favorites in the franchise.

Yeah they're both so good. A theoretical P5A could mean seeing the Phantom Thieves interact with the P3/P4 people and that's always a fun time with all these morons. I can already see Yusuke and Kanji being the weirdest of friends over the artistic value of knitting.

I ended up reducing the difficulty to Easy near the end just because I wanted to see the rest of the story so I don't know how much that influences things but yeah Yusuke had no problem shredding enemy shields just through his obscenely high crit rate.

Also finished the game tonight. I very much enjoyed the whole thing lots. Sophia & Zenkichi is wonderful cast additions and I enjoyed the story throughout the game. As always it was bittersweet to get to the end and watch all the kids depart again.

If you ever want to see some cool little foreshadowing go rewatch the scene back at Sendai. Once you introduce Sophia to her Ichinose's mask completely slips off for a second.
