Messantia - A quiet courtyard near the Vein - Twilight

Genga hustles out the door a moment behind Vargash, boldly standing in the open with his huge hammer at the ready.

Obviously alarmed by the return of the armed men his companion had seen earlier, the cloaked figure the party had seen from the balcony throws back his hood, revealing the wan face of a thin, middle-aged man, with tousled brown hair, wild eyes, and a glare fit to shatter mirrors. "Get the rest down here now!" he growls, and then steps forward, locking his dire gaze upon the Pict.

With a commanding gesture, he points directly at Genga, and issues a menacing ultimatum!

"You! Savage! You and your fellows begone from here, or we'll slit all your throats and leave your corpses floating in the harbor!"

Genga takes a Minor action to Move one Zone, and then trades his Standard action for another Minor action to draw his weapon.

GM Interrupts with a DOOM SPEND! GM spends 1 Doom to Seize the Initiative, allowing one NPC to take their move early.
Cloaked Man spends a free action to speak to his companions, and then spends a standard action to make a mental attack by using a Display!

Genga is on his guard: he may choose to take a Defend Reaction, at the cost of adding 1 doom to the doom pool! If he does, he'll roll his Discipline skill.

Genga shrugs off the cloaked man's attempt to intimidate him.

Genga adds 1 Doom to the pool to make his Defend Reaction.
Genga rolls two successes, and because this is a Close attack being made at Medium range, the Cloaked Man needs (D1, plus 1 for range, plus 2 for Genga's successes) = 4 successes:

Steely Glare (T): Range C+1, Mental, Stun; no extra dice.: 2#1d20 7 9

He scores just one Success. Genga generates three Momentum! He can spend any of them now, and/or add the remainder to the party's pool.

Keep quiet and don't gently caress it up.

It was time for Neo to not gently caress it up, and by doing so cease being quiet. An old sailor gave him an aphorism that Neo thought applied in this situation, your name is in the mouth of others: be sure it has teeth. So Neo stepped out onto the balcony and cleared his throat, nine months shouting over the sounds of marching armies and crowded docks does wonders to learning how to project your voice into an alley like this.

"Greetings and Salutations to you down there. Now, I understand that weapons are already clashing but let me make it very clear.

IF YOU LEAVE NOW THIS WILL BE THE END OF IT.

We are here to to defend these neighbors from foreign invasion, and that includes your actions at the moment. We are not here to enforce justice upon you, we are here to simply defend these homes, FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE TO PLY YOUR TRADE.

...

OR BE DESTROYED
"

As he said the ending line, he lifted his sword above his head in what he hoped looked like a vainglorious pose of victory, but felt like when his trainers had him hold for defending downward blows.

Neo hoped he made the right move, he could kind of hear Genga engage one of the thieves with words, so her certainly hopes someone was listening and took his threat seriously, because he felt ridiculous standing on a balcony shouting into a courtyard.

Goons Are Gifts
Jan 1, 1970

Shubba takes a deep breath before he comes out to the balcony, letting his simple dark robe flow with the moving air to appear a lot bigger than he actually is. He positions himself right next to Neophytos and takes an almost preaching stand. Without lowering his hood, he spreads his arms, as if he is ready to bless his sacred soldiers in the courtyard. His face is barely visible through the shade of the hood, but he hopes that his piercing, secretive look in his eyes reaches the aggressors down below.
"You heard it, friends, lower your weapons and leave now or deal with the dire consequences."
He shouts with his grumbling, deep and surprisingly loud voice. The echo the courtyard causes their bones to shake, at least this is what he hopes.
Shortly after observing if either intimidation attempt shows any effect, he whispers to Neophytos: "Maybe we can appear like we have a plan or appear official enough for them to scare off. They don't look too well organized either."

Shubba assists Neophytos in his intimidation attempt.

Messantia - A quiet courtyard near the Vein - Twilight
Shubba's whispering of plans to Neophytos is abruptly cut off, as a clattering cart suddenly appears in the alleyway! Two chestnut horses drawing an open-topped, simple wooden four-wheeled cart, driven by two men in a cloaks - one much like the first cloaked man, but an attractive forest green color, and one in a shabby, well-worn grey hood. Almost at the same time, another woman emerges from the house across the way, a thin, tough-looking girl with short-cropped hair, who yanks a thick, straight shortsword from a scabbard on her back.
"What's all this?" calls out the green-cloaked figure... "Who are these people?"
The bald man with the heavy crowbar is first to answer him. "The neighbor's guests, or hirelings. Interferers making bold threats!"
Quick on the uptake, the green-cloaked man, absent-mindedly tugging on his brown goatee as he takes in Kallias of Bezfarda, just visible within his doorway... Shubba and Neophytos on the balcony above, Genga and Inarus in the center of the courtyard, and Vargash under the tree at the far end. "Well?" he shouts after a bare moment, "what are you all waiting for? Let's see the color of their blood!"

With the exception of the first hooded figure, who is still eyeing Neo with doubt, the rest of the men and women spring forward, weapons at hand! While the thief with the crowbar charges Genga, the green-hooded man still atop the cart pulls out a leathern sling, a weapon favored by urban criminals for its ease of concealment, and hurls a hard lead bullet at Inarus.
The woman who had already been standing outside the neighbor's door reveals a small, loaded crossbow, which she levels at Vargash, and fires!
The grey-hooded man reaches down into the cart, coming up with a span of hard wood, and then hops down to the cobbles, sizing up his enemies.

With Shubba's assistance, Neo generates a point of Momentum, which is added to the party's pool.
The PCs have finished acting, remaining NPCs act.

The newcomer in the green hood's slingshot whizzes just past Inarus as he anticipates the attack and dodges nimblefooted out of the way. The bald thief's awkward jab with the heavy crowbar misses wide - Genga doesn't even flinch. But Vargash's attempt to avoid the crossbow bolt isn't enough: it strikes glancing against his chest, failing to penetrate his padded jerkin, but he feels the bruising force as a sharp pain in his ribs!

Greenhood ranged attacks Inarus, who adds 1 Doom to the pool to take a Reaction. Inarus rolls 2 successes on his Acrobatics check: a combat check is DC1, so he generates 1 Momentum. Sling: Range M. Ranged attack vs. Inarus, opposed, Range M: 2#1d20 9 3. Greenhood scores 2 successes: DC1, so he generates 1 Momentum. This is a tie: PCs win ties unless the GM spends 1pt of doom. Vargash may not have acted swiftly, exactly, but he's unwilling to let the group by the doorway shoot at him again unchallenged: he clears the distance and lays into the two more heavily armed opponents, his sword clattering across reinforced Argossian armor and leaving a nasty slash on the woman with the crossbow's arm, crashing into the similarly-armored chest of the woman with the sword to hand, and then catching the first opponent in the chest a glancing blow on a surprise backswing!

The woman with the crossbow falters for a moment... she seems near to giving up. The other shrugs off the strike to her brigandine and seems to be sizing Vargash up for an opening.

Vargash spends a minor action to Move within Medium range, closing to Reach with both First Swordlady (who shot at him) and Second Swordlady, who is adjacent.
He spends 1 Momentum from the party pool to make a three-dice melee attack on First Swordlady, who has no melee weapon in hand and thus effectively Reach 0 vs. Vargash's Reach of 2 so the difficulty remains D1: for four successes against (First Swordlady does not take a React action), resulting in a hit and three immediate Momentum.
Vargash's Broadsword does 5 combat dice of damage. He spends one Momentum on the Additional Damage immediate spend, which adds one point of damage (not another die), so, ignoring the last die rolled, he scores 3+1=4 damage and 3 Effects (the Broadsword has no activatable Qualities on the attack, so the Effects do nothing).
First Swordlady's Brigandine armor has 2 Soak: she takes 2 Vigor damage and is still standing.
Vargash spends 2 more momentum for the Secondary Target immediate spend: this does half damage (2) to an adjacent foe, Second Swordlady, whose Brigandine armor's Soak of 2 negates.
Vargash returns 1 Momentum to the party pool.
Vargash then spends a Fortune point on a Bonus Action, taking a second Standard Action! He makes another attack on First Swordlady, scoring a hit with +1 momentum. He rolls 3 damage: after 2 Soak, First Swordlady takes another point of Vigor and is still standing. Vargash returns another Momentum to the party pool.

Genga makes a melee attack with his maul. Bald Thug does not take a Reaction. Bald Thug has Reach 2, so does Genga; D1 attack, 2 successes is a hit with one Momentum.

A maul is 5 combat dice of damage, plus Genga's Brawn of 12 adds 3 more dice, for a total of 8!
5 dice already rolled generates 0+2+1+2+1=6 damage, plus two Effects.
At least one Effect activates all activatable Qualities of a weapon. The Maul has Knockdown and Stun Qualities: both are activated! Bald Thug is knocked prone, and Stunned!

It's a matter of a few fumbling seconds for Shubba to find his way back through the darkened room behind the balcony to the long hallway, and then he rushes easily back the way the party entered, down the stairs and through the kitchens to the rear entrance, where he finds Kallias of Bezfarda intently observing the fracas in the courtyard. Shubba takes up a protective position beside the man, a dagger in hand, ready to receive any foes that evade his friends.

"Hoy, did you see that? Hah! Genga put that fellow with the iron bar into the dirt with one swing! Marvelous!" the portly benefactor proclaims to Shubba, elbowing him. But then, frowning, he adds "Well-organized for thieves, they have a wagon to haul away Innochio's best robes and table-silver. I wonder where's Innochio, I do hope they haven't murdered him." He seems almost sincere.

The cloaked man, with visible effort, regains his composure somewhat. Lost in a moment of reverie, Genga takes a mighty blow right to the solar plexus! His brigandine wards off the nasty spikes in the villain's club, but he is thrown off balance, and the next breath is coming quite hard....!

Genga adds 1 Doom to the pool to make a Reaction, rolling against his Parry skill (TN9) for zero successes.
Greyhood rolls melee attack D1 Reach 2 vs. Genga's Reach 2, with an extra d20 (total 2) from prior Doom spend.
Attack, D1, Struggle, Reach 2vs2, +1 dice (2 total): 2#1d20 10 18
One success, Greyhood wins the struggle with zero momentum to spare, and rolls damage!
Damage, 3+2=5 Dice, Knockdown, Stun: 5#1d6 5 3 5 4 5: 3 damage, 2 effects!
Hit location: Hit Location: 1d20 9, Torso
Genga's torso has 2 armor soak.
Genga takes 1 damage, and is knocked down and stunned!
Genga can ignore Knockdown by adding 1 Doom. Genga may ignore Stunned for the cost of 1 Doom per effect rolled, so 2 Doom total.

End of round! The party Momentum pool decays by 1.

Vargash is watching their eyes, not their blades, and when the one on the right twitches at Genga's grunt of pain he pivots, shoulders her aside and drives for the one that seems to be the leader of this surprisingly competent gang. Take him down, who knows? Perhaps the words of the silver-tongued balcony dweller might find better purchase...

Genga

Genga shakes his head, grits his teeth, and rolls back to his feet, Maul in hand. Seeking revenge, he brings his mighty blunt weapon around at the dastardly Green Cloak.

A maul is 5 combat dice of damage, plus Genga's Brawn of 12 adds 3 more dice, for a total of 8!

Keep rolling, Genga!

Vargash's expert drive with his sword finds a mark - the apparent leader's arm spurts a gout of blood as the sharp blade slices cloth and flesh. The man bellows with pain!

Meanwhile, Genga's surprise at being knocked to the ground isn't enough to overcome his hard-earned fighting instincts, as he rolls with the landing and returns to his feet in a graceful move that catches his opponent by surprise - and his maul square in his opponent's chest! The man in the grey hood is sent sprawling in turn, gasping.

Genga elects not to add Doom, taking both the knockdown and stun.
Vargash spends a standard action to attack Cloaked Man, and spends 1 momentum from the pool on his attack, TN 14, reach 2 vs 1, D1. Cloaked Man takes no reaction, and is hit: Vargash generates 1 Momentum.
Vargash spends this momentum to reroll missed damage dice, resulting in 5 vigor damage and 2 effects! Cloaked Man has no armor soak. Vargash's sword has no effect qualities.
Causing 5 Vigor automatically causes 1 Wound!
Genga stands as a Minor action, and then adds 1 Doom to take a standard action. He attacks Grey Hood, TN 11, Reach 2 vs 2, D1. Grey Hood takes no reaction and is hit.
Genga rolls 3 damage and 1 Effect! Greyhood's Armor Soak 1 reduces this to two Vigor damage. Grey Hood is knocked down and stunned! He is Staggered until the end of his next turn.

Inarus

Inarus moves closer (to zone D) to the melee with Vargash at the center and takes aim at the cloaked man.

:eng101: Drop a momentum on rerolling all your missed damage dice imo, it's easy and potentially extremely gratifying.

Also the 1 you rolled counts as two successes, because it was under your focus.

I will do just that -- going to reroll the 3,4,4 damage rolls (3d6) for 1 momentum:

Re-Roll Missed Damage Dice: 3#1d6 5 1 6

new damage: 3
total damage, after ro-roll: 5

Messantia - A noisy courtyard near the Vein - Twilight

With horses and a cart crossing through his line of fire, Inarus circles behind it, seeking and then expertly taking advantage of a gap in the tightly-clustered melee to find his mark. A feathered shaft sprouts from the cloaked man's right eye, and he screams, his dagger clattering to the ground as he clutches at his face, blood spurting across the cobbles, before going limp!

The cart driver seems to snap out of his panicked reverie at the sight of his presumed colleague's apparent demise. "We are overmatched," he snaps at the women Vargash has been fencing with. "Retreat! We'll pay these dogs back for their interference another time." Immediately the reins creak as he directs his cart forward, only stopping when the horses refuse to slam directly into the wall of the house opposite, but as the cart skids and the ironclad wheels spark on the stone, the man nimbly leaps from the drivers' position into the shadows of the narrow gap between the houses that Vargash had spotted earlier!

Inarus takes a minor action to move one zone to D, and a standard action to attack Cloaked Man - D1. He hits, generating two momentum; rolls three Vigor damage and an effect, and spends one momentum to reroll misses, bringing it up to five Vigor damage and three Effects. Inarus' Hunting Bow has no Effect-triggered qualities. (GM's note: with the Accurate talent, he could have rerolled up to two dice of damage for free...)
The Cloaked Man takes 5 damage, causing a Wound, and also has run out of Vigor, taking another Wound, for a total of three Wounds this encounter. He is dropped and out of the fight. Inarus adds 1 Momentum to the party's pool.

GM spends 1 Doom to Seize the Initiative!

Greenhood takes a free action to speak. He takes a minor action to direct his horses, driving his cart into Zone F. He converts his standard action to a minor action to disembark from the cart.

The cart is now an obstacle! Characters cannot enter Zone F without dealing with the horses and/or cart somehow.
