I think they actually smashed it into the planet because it ended up on a way lower trajectory than planned because of conversion fuckups. The US actually has a pretty good record for landing things on Mars. It's other countries, particularly Russia, that have this weird inability to consistently do this thing we have a pretty reasonable success rate at doing. Though I did learn that China joined the "Sent poo poo to Mars successfully" club this month and will be attempting a probe landing later this year.
