The US actually has a pretty good record for landing things on Mars. It's other countries, particularly Russia, that have this weird inability to consistently do this thing we have a pretty reasonable success rate at doing. Though I did learn that China joined the "Sent poo poo to Mars successfully" club this month and will be attempting a probe landing later this year.
