The US actually has a pretty good record for landing things on Mars. It's other countries, particularly Russia, that have this weird inability to consistently do this thing we have a pretty reasonable success rate at doing. Didn't israel crash a bunch of tardigrades on the moon? Humanity might've polluted the moon with things that can actually survive there
