I think they actually smashed it into the planet because it ended up on a way lower trajectory than planned because of conversion fuckups. The US actually has a pretty good record for landing things on Mars. It's other countries, particularly Russia, that have this weird inability to consistently do this thing we have a pretty reasonable success rate at doing.
