Yea the game is like “she’s not ready!” despite the fact you just had several critical scenes in Sae’s casino where she kicks rear end and saves you.

I viewed it as they wanted to minimize the number of people Shido would try and kill should things go wrong.

Shido’s Palace would also have a bunch of dialogue they’d have to seriously rewrite to account for her presence, along with new cutscenes

Good god I thought rejecting Haru is bad but When Sumire straight up tells you she loves you, always has, and can only now work up the confidence to tell you and all you can respond with is “let’s just stay friends...ok?”

Ouch.

It's somehow even worse that she takes it like an absolute champ if you turn her down. :smith:

She reacts really well though vs Haru who's devastated.

Thankee kindly.
Picking between Haru, Sumire, and Ann rejections is like that sweating while deciding what button to press meme, except choosing one button kills three other people, oof. Or you go the nuclear option and have Joker stay a bachelor.

I usually pick Ann, but it's really rough no matter what.

I didn't mind the Ann rejection on my first playthrough, though the wording used to do so was stilted. The ones for Haru and Sumire were pretty rough though, yeah.

My Joker simply didn't have time for a girlfriend until after Shido was defeated. He had however many Confidants to help, some stats to max, some jobs to do, a lot of money to earn, spiting every other student by coming first in the class rank, and the biggest politician in Japan to take down - how do you fit dates into all that? It was only after he'd done that he felt he could say yes to dating and, without the option to go back to someone and say "Actually I'd like to be more than friends" the only choices left were Ohya and Yoshizawa. And it wasn't going to be Ohya.

I've been watching the Persona 5 anime with my girlfriend and while it's mostly just, like, okay (and with some often terrible animation), I think it handled the whole fight between Ryuji and Morgana in the lead up to the fifth Palace much better than the game did. And maybe it's just Max Mittelman's performance in the dub, but Ryuji has this really heartfelt apology speech in the anime that was legit pretty touching.

That's sort of why I was wondering about Adachi. Namatame clearly does still have a shadow (and never awoke to his version of Izanagi). Did Adachi have to face himself to gain his Izanagi persona, or did it awaken like Yu's, skipping the face-your-shadow part? It'd be interesting if Adachi had to face his shadow to gain Magatsu-Izanagi and managed to do so without a fight. I guess the other possibility is that the ability to straight-up awaken Izanagi without confronting your shadow is an Izanagi thing and not a wild card thing.
Though this doesn't explicitly answer the question, Adachi never enters the TV World before he has to escape capture at the end of the game IIRC.

Yeah, the pure good boy route is the objectively best choice because the "hanging out with your bros" scenes are above the rest, but I also like Hifumi a lot.

I have absolutely no idea how far along in development it might have been before it was cut, but I'm sad that Hifumi wasn't a party member like originally planned.

Harrow
Jun 30, 2012

IIRC, it's less that Hifumi, the shogi player, was going to be a party member and more that a planned party member had Hifumi's character design. When that party member was cut, the design was reused for Hifumi the confidant. I don't know if there are many details on what the planned party member who looked like Hifumi would've been like, though I think I read that they were going to be a sort of strategist and maybe got merged with Makoto?

Still a shame, Hifumi-as-presented-in-game would have been a cool party member.

Better than Haru, honestly, though Haru is 100% redeemed in Strikers.

I think the Queen codename was the Hifumi-character's first before they scrapped her and rolled her traits and role into Makoto's?

One of the more interesting pieces of Persona 5 concept art to me is this one:

It seems to suggest that there was an idea for Metaverse outfits where they'd be more like modified/rebel-themed versions of the characters' school uniforms, rather than the totally different costumes we see in the full game. It's kind of fun to wonder what they would've looked like for others.

Also in this version, Joker's signature color was blue.

I'm really curious what traits and role Makoto would have had in the initial ideas, then? There's not a lot to her except being the planner/strategist (and some repressed rage at her situation in life I guess)

If I recall, what eventually because Hifumi was going to be the more "radical" strategist of the team, then they just rolled that personality trait into Makoto.

Harrow
Jun 30, 2012

Yeah, I think Makoto and (since we don't know what the character's name would've been let's just stick with) Hifumi were both going to take strategist roles and potentially be in conflict about what the best course of action would be.

I mean, from what I recall the original idea was that Sae was your probation officer as well as your interrogator from the SIU. Hence her shock at seeing you at the start is because she's been looking after you in her apartment the last few months and you've shown no signs of any criminal activity.

that'd be odd since a queen doesn't exist in standard shogi, only in some variants.

Yeah, the year is never displayed in-game but assuming Persona 5 takes place in 2016, Ken is 17 when Persona 5 starts. He'd be a third year like Makoto and Haru probably.
