playing Royal for the first time and im a little baffled they didn't try to shore up or change Yusuke's awful storyline given he comes off as a huge fuckin creep. Still seems like a gigantic oversight that my party of friends is just sweeping "this guy wanted to sexually blackmail our other friend" under the rug.

I honestly believe that the intended reading of that scene is that Yusuke isn't being creepy because he legitimately does not know what sex is.

Doesn't really make it better, though.

to be fair he comes off as extremely inexperienced when it comes to social mannerisms, to the point where I assumed he was being written as autistic or something

I've only got Maruki at rank 5 and I'm in September. Am I hosed? I think I'm just gonna have to hang out with him every conceivable day to get rank 9 in time

people out here talking about "what if I could date Yusuke" but imo the Confidant interactions with Akechi seem like they are absolutely dripping with homoerotic subtext.

Speaking of which, I maxed out Maruki/Kasumi already but only have like 25 days til the deadline to max Akechi, sadly doesn't seem like I'll get there lol. This is the farthest I've ever gotten in the game--I inexplicably dropped off the second I got to the Casino in vanilla--but I'm def ready for things to wrap up. I think the game gets a bit pointless/tedious once you max out certain traits/confidants and at that rate, there's no point really trying to do certain activities. Hopefully in Persona 6 (coming 2030) they shore that up and also bump up the characters at least to college age so some of this feels less weird.

How far along are you on Akechi's link? Might still be possible, some of his link is only available after clearing the dungeon anyway.

I'm on rank 6 so I doubt I'll be able to bump it to 9 within like 20 days lol. I usually do dungeons in one "day" so I'd have at least 2 weeks minimum but Akechi's availability is already pretty transient.

You only need to get to 8.

whew ok, we'll see if sacrificing poor Hifumi for Makoto due to shogi girl and Akechi having the same evening windows will be worth it!

tbh a lot of the relationship writing is pretty out-of-nowhere, even with someone like Makoto it kind of appears out of nowhere when she admits "idk poo poo about romance bruh" in comparison to how organic the Hifumi or even Kasumi relationships develop. It's not as bad as Ann's but it's not formulated as well, even if the game seems to push you and Makoto together often anyway. The Ryuji confidant path might be the most meaningful development in terms of character drive, purpose, and friendship. Yusuke is so loving weird I can only laugh as he collapses in an art show and I button mash "loving stand up, Yusuke."

Kawakami's whole thing is made even worse with how she just lazily lies about why she needed money and then it just becomes a deeply uncomfortable situation. Out of all the "adult relationships" somehow Tae's comes off the least weird, even if she's the pain-fetish play-doctor one.

If you romance Futaba you should get arrested by Akechi lol.

Going further on this, on replay of P5 I really do feel that at the very least, P5's friend group isn't as moronic as the P4 group, who come off as dumbbells incapable of even cooking meals. Kanji is so stupid he winds back around to being awesome but the others just seem very dumb compared to the team of logical junior detectives in P5 with Makoto/Akechi/sometimes Yusuke. On the flipside sometimes this means they come off as too terse, and it really hits home once you take turns hanging out with Futaba post-Palace--Makoto and Yusuke have no idea how to make small talk while Ryuji/Ann do far better just by virtue of being generally more casual people.

In conclusion I hope P6 gives us adult characters instead a la Yakuza Like A Dragon so we can finally get a deadbeat dad Persona user, because I was upset Sojiro never got to join you

actually managed to max out Akechi's confidant level before end of November!...

:stare:

As someone who only got up to the start of the Casino palace in Vanilla, I didn't have any ideas besides "maybe it was Morgana or Mishima lol" for who betrays you. With the additional Akechi Confidant route in this one, they couldn't be clearer about how the character is a loving psychopath (asking you first to maybe leave your team, then the Mementos duel.) I figured maybe it was a normal "rival" back and forth for the Mementos thing, but the sudden outburst into the "I hate you SO much" poo poo was genuinely shocking lol..

One of the funniest (unintentionally I'm pretty sure) parts of the original P5 release related to your spoiler is that (spoiler for the next part of their plot, but being as intentionally vague as I can be) Akechi also turns out to be a psycho in the base game. But after they resolve that plot basically off screen literally no one mentions him again for the rest of the game, despite it being a Big Moment. It's super bizarre :psyduck:. Honestly I can't wait to see differences in that event because it was very strange

that's pretty funny considering that in Vanilla, there's almost no Akechi content besides him showing up at the coffee bar drinking cups like a dick. Zero buildup for the kind of person he is and what's to come later with the story. I do have to give credit to the game here though: I didn't really expect this lol

finished the casino and just lol at this huge convoluted explanation of what ensues, especially at how "pancakes" was the loving lynchpin of this entire operation.

it is pretty weird at how the game essentially "tricks" you, the player, even as you're playing from Joker's perspective, but act like you don't know what's about to transpire in terms of the secret plans, all of which are peak anime Rube Goldberg.

I have many stupid questions but mainly am curious about

Akechi being this guy with "powers" before meeting Shido. Do they go into detail how he even
came across this poo poo or am I misunderstanding things? Also, was his story about his dad a lie to make a "backstory" for himself or is that really what hosed him up into Rorschach territory? His motivations seem so cartoonishly evil and I wasn't expecting him to be quite so psychotic--I only expected him to turn me in just to prove he was the better rival or something, out of pride.

Also, in regards to the Metaverse app, is it ever explained why Igor and the app are on "my side" but they aren't on Akechi's? It seems odd that there's a sub-division of this weird guy helping me within this other dimension. I forgot how this is broached in P4 (mostly because it seemed less high stakes to me) but it is a curious thing that this other world is legit something that was discovered by researchers, yet Igor has a supernatural presence in it..

for all of persona 5's issues those things actually do get explained to some extent "later"

cool, thanks!

I was playing on Hard for the most part but turned it down to Normal temporarily after realizing Hard is perhaps even harder than Merciless due to how the crits work---the Burger man boss was loving impossible with how little damage I could do to those robots in 2 turns. Had to do it again when the Casino boss' desperation Berserker attack one shot me EVERY time. I just got too frustrated and honestly after 65+ hrs idc about grinding anymore, going to leave it at Normal. It feels a bit like a failure but I read that Merciless somehow would have made some things easier, idk how true it is but at this rate I'm ready to finish off the game.

this is such poor writing imo. same thing with ryuji, and hell, most of the phantom thieves. party member s-links should flesh out their chracters, not be totally contradictory. ryuji in his s link is so chill and has such a good head on his shoulders, and in the story is unbelievably stupid.

makoto is a great example as well I think. other than the fact that her introductory palace has nothing to do with her, her awakening scene is so cool. but then right afterwards she basically goes right back to being a goodie two shoes. constantly badgering people about doing well on their grades. then her s link is also not really about her, where she learns that actually being a total busy body towards random students you don't know is the correct thing to do. it's very oddly done. I feel like her original palace boss was supposed to be the principal. that would've made much more sense, especially with his (nonsensical) prominance in the story. I still don't understand why this random school principal and school are part of the biggggg conspiracy.

late to this a bit but on replay of the game via Royal it really has hit me just how poorly/stupidly the game was written or constructed and makes me understand why some SMT fans legit view Persona as the babybrain game of the overarching IP

The pre-release tagline was "You are a slave. Want emancipation?"

I can see someone promised emancipation being dissatisfied with "reform of slavery is possible".

in retrospect that tagline with the 4 chairs/shackles was so loving hardcore and it's funny to consider such a poppy school/date/friendsim had that kind of preview graphic

also count me in as a person who wished they had an earlier save to undo the Makoto relationship because lol at that "I want to be a COP" confession. At that moment I knew I should have just waited for Kasumi lol
