Here's a game some of you fuckers might enjoy: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1388770/Cruelty_Squad/ It's Cruelty Squad, a cyberpunk, biopunk "power fantasy simulator" where you murder the poo poo out of people and trade on the stock and organ markets. That does sound like it's being edgy for the sake of being edgy, but from the reviews I've seen, it does it really well. Apparently it got more than a few players actually feeling emotions. The UI, textures, and everything else look loving awful, but they're supposed to, which sounds like a cop out at first until you realize how much effort it takes to make something look that consistently bad. If anything, it adds to the game. I'm gonna be checking it out later, just thought I'd post this here while I can.

this game looks amazing but Im holding off until its out of early access that being said, being even more janky than normal kinda seems like a selling point for this game

Game says early access but the early access blurb says they're basically done with the game. Would you say that the game feels like a finished product? I'm strongly considering buying the game tbh

The game is quite fun although the AI is pretty darn stupid. Despite that, the level design is pretty drat extrordinary with all sorts of different approaches and layouts with the different weapons and augmentations you get.

This game is really fun, but I can't imagine recommending it to anyone. It hits me just right though. There's no explanation for anything, and there's enough going on under the surface that it has a great sense of mystery.

I don't care if it goes against the spirit of the game, enemies really need to be something beyond aimlessly-wandering turrets with perfect accuracy; not so much because of the game's more frustrating moments, but rather that once you've gotten used to how the AI behaves the challenge boils down to "which way did that activated guy go" and whatever surprises the level has I store for you. What if higher-ranked enemies moved in patrols, or melee enemies were given a lunge attack? Rather than stare at you, what if dogs that couldn't reach you instead ran off to alert the rest of the map? Instead of filing into a doorway one at a time, what if the swat dudes fired grenades and bouncy rounds into your apartment to flush you out? There has to be other mercs out there kitted-out like the protagonist, what if you ran into one working for your target leaping around like a Quake bot? I loved the little scripted bits like the police showing up at the end of the casino map or the necromech busting down the wall at the apartment building. They made the levels feel more alive and less like a deathmatch arena and I wish those moments could happen more organically. Also where are all the dystopian police APCs and aircraft with disgusting biopunk features and enough firepower to level a city block? At the very least those police cruisers should be disturbingly, visibly breathing.

Bought this at like 7 am this morning after not sleeping at all last night and I've been playing throughout the day. I'm five or six levels in and can confirm that 1. poo poo is bananas 2. poo poo is really good You WILL struggle with the first mission. If you want some advice starting out: Use and abuse the silenced pistol. Use the SMG you start with as a plan B if headshotting every guard in the room doesn't work out. Look for alternate routes. The front door of any given building is mostly there out of obligation; you don't have to just barge right in like that. There is A LOT of hidden stuff to discover. Wandering around and getting yourself killed is worth it, same as it is in soulslike games.

The level design is so loving cool. It's surreal and confusing without ever becoming incoherent and the graphical style gives it such a disturbing vibe. I love the buildings in the suburb map because it reminds me of Active Worlds

It took me a while to discover why the entire level is just red and black is because I put on the night vision goggle.

I thought the reviews were some sort of meme but then I saw one that compared it to E.Y.E. which was also similarly weird and janky and compelling. Does that seem about right?

its narrative (if you give a poo poo about that) is pretty punk, too - message is more or less "we live in a hollow but convenient world and selling your soul to a corporation is pretty terrible"

There's a theme of intense existential horror that runs through everything that I haven't seen done this way before.

I don't know I feel like there is a rigid consistency in the design that is highly immersive and I'm sure it does a good job of simulating its reality.

Shoehead posted:I can't do the Mall at all, these cop mechs are rough In my first successful run I lured the necromechs away as I hadn't got the rocket launcher in the couple of previous levels you could (as Foul Fowl said you can get it in Paradise and you can also get one in Pharmakokinetiks behind a Divine Link door) but there's also one in the level. If you have it you can just run along the upper floors and fire a rocket from a mile away at the target. Can also allow you to beat Sin Space Engineering in <10 seconds. My bigger problem is I somehow missed the exit that first time through so I explored the entire level and ended up getting the rocket launcher and the hidden item. Felt dumb last night because I thought House was $100,000 to unlock. It's $1,000,000. Groovelord Neato fucked around with this message at 13:52 on Jun 25, 2021 |
