Download Newpipe instead of the YouTube app if you're on Android. It's a better YouTube app that will play while locked, stop ads etc.

You can get the latest installer (.apk) from their github and as long as you keep it up to date (it'll notify you of new releases) it works for 99% of the videos I play on my phone.
