There are a lot of very well informed and thoughtful people who will tell you that actually these programs were too limp dick to accomplish anything and the Dems will lose in 2022 because of it. They've basically political clairvoyants!!!

Nobody wants to even touch the plain fact that UBI is not really a help with the way it works in most of these chud hell states. The next two elections are going to be defined by reaction to the illegitimate stolen fake election. Without the unifying target of getting Trump out to hold some center for the libs to rally around, the next generation of MTGs and Boeberts and Cawthorns are gonna swoop on in, and we're opening the throttle on the way to Crazytown 2024.

This would be like me asking “are you saying we... shouldn’t help people who need it right now and should focus on an infrastructure bill?”

No. That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying you’re fooling yourself if you think a bill that massive won’t be wasted on anything but infrastructure, save for a small portion of it. It will be a $2-4tn bill with infrastructure in it, not a $2-4tn infrastructure bill (but they will call it an infrastructure bill to gain support). And it will take them MONTHS to pass it, if they even do, which is time wasted that could be used helping people who need it right now.

There are people out there who haven’t been able to pay rent for months (which is still accruing, by the way, leading to more debt), or have months and months of back owed rent.

If the $2-4tn infrastructure bill helps people like that, cool. If not, then I think our efforts should go elsewhere simply because congress doesn’t seem to be able to juggle two big things at once.

E: plus, why wait til September? So they can pack the bill and have something to campaign on during midterms?

Not much point in appropriating 4 trillion dollars to spend if the various companies / governments / supply chain concerns aren't addressed. You also have to identify and prioritize the projects where the money absolutely has to go vs. needed improvements vs. pure pork.

Are you arguing that they should spend less? Or just that government is inefficient? I don't think the free-market solution to this problem has ever really bared out in reality.

There is still an active eviction moratorium through the CDC that is likely going to be extended. I get what you are saying about the debt issue, but I'm not sure exactly what solution to that problem would look like. Do you want the Federal government to pay all those landlords? I'm pretty sure they couldn't simply nullify the debt that they don't own, so at this point there is a very real limitation on exactly what the government can do other than extend those protections or appropriate money to pay delinquent bills.

Worth noting that people who are facing eviction likely aren't going to be sued for their debts by their landlords, as that process is expensive and the landlords are unlikely to recover money from people who cannot afford to pay rent.

Doing some napkin math, it looks like for 120b the federal government could offer up 3k grants to individuals facing eviction. That would enable them to make a security deposit payment on a new place? Course that suggestion has means testing built into it, so people aren't going to like it.

How is it disastrous to American long term interests?
