By the time the 2022 elections roll around a huge amount of Americans will have received various amounts of money from the government. There are a lot of very well informed and thoughtful people who will tell you that actually these programs were too limp dick to accomplish anything and the Dems will lose in 2022 because of it. They've basically political clairvoyants!!!

Democrats need to create and push messaging touting their bill and GOP resistance, as well as socialist policies to build support. They haven't even passed the thing yet, but you're definitely not wrong. I do have concerns about what kind of policies are going to pass constitutional muster with the new composition of the court.

US Berder Patrol posted:I have trouble feeling any hope about it. The mainstream dems are trained to recoil from any accusation of socialism, there's no way they're going to start putting up actual socialist poo poo like jobs and housing guarantees and UBI as a party platform. We got people acting like we've achieved some progressive dream legislation with Sleepy Joe channeling his inner Tio Bernie because normal folk are gonna get $1400, once. Nobody wants to even touch the plain fact that UBI is not really a help with the way it works in most of these chud hell states. The next two elections are going to be defined by reaction to the illegitimate stolen fake election. Without the unifying target of getting Trump out to hold some center for the libs to rally around, the next generation of MTGs and Boeberts and Cawthorns are gonna swoop on in, and we're opening the throttle on the way to Crazytown 2024. There is a lot more to that bill than the direct payments. That's not what we spent 1.9 trillion on

boop the snoot posted:This would be like me asking “are you saying we... shouldn’t help people who need it right now and should focus on an infrastructure bill?” Not much point in appropriating 4 trillion dollars to spend if the various companies / governments / supply chain concerns aren't addressed. You also have to identify and prioritize the projects where the money absolutely has to go vs. needed improvements vs. pure pork. Are you arguing that they should spend less? Or just that government is inefficient? I don't think the free-market solution to this problem has ever really bared out in reality. PookBear posted:"we raised everyone's wages" is an easy victory that is very straight forward to explain to the population in how it helped them. Do you think that's a priority over extending UI, the vaccine effort, funding near bankrupt state and municipal governments and putting money in the pockets of Americans?

There is still an active eviction moratorium through the CDC that is likely going to be extended. I get what you are saying about the debt issue, but I'm not sure exactly what solution to that problem would look like. Do you want the Federal government to pay all those landlords? I'm pretty sure they couldn't simply nullify the debt that they don't own, so at this point there is a very real limitation on exactly what the government can do other than extend those protections or appropriate money to pay delinquent bills. Worth noting that people who are facing eviction likely aren't going to be sued for their debts by their landlords, as that process is expensive and the landlords are unlikely to recover money from people who cannot afford to pay rent. Doing some napkin math, it looks like for 120b the federal government could offer up 3k grants to individuals facing eviction. That would enable them to make a security deposit payment on a new place? Course that suggestion has means testing built into it, so people aren't going to like it.

My understanding is it is flat. I think scaling it to cost of living might run into some equal protection clause issues, in addition to being regressive. Though maybe the real equal protection issue is treating everyone as equitably situated when they are not. Really makes you think.
