Framber Valdez apparently fractured his ring finger on his pitching hand fielding a ball yesterday, uh, somehow? Not really clear from this clip but it must have bounced into his hand hard.

Anyway apparently he could end up missing the entire season because of it, the human body is dumb:

Yeah it's almost to a tee what the Cubs are doing. Coast on a recent ring and point to your high payroll as proof that you're not cheaping out, despite having numerous roster holes that you refuse to fill with anything but bargain bin filler. And as bawfuls said having a small, iconic stadium that you're going to fill pretty much every night not just from your own fans but also (hopefully post-COVID) tourists who want to see your historic ballpark probably doesn't hurt either.

I've not gotten drunk exclusively off ballpark beer but I have taken the train up to SF, stopped by a couple breweries pre-game, had a couple more at the game, and then gone back out into the city for a few more after the game, and then missed the last CalTrain of the night because I was too drunk to remember the schedule and had to pay a shitload to take an Uber all the way back to San Jose. :downs:

Nobody has a clue at this point. The Nats released Jeffress out of the blue for "personal reasons", Jeffress immediately took to twitter to blame his former agent for "ruining [his] life", and said former agent made a couple response tweets that he hasn't even talked to Jeffress since 2019 - let alone represented him - so he's confused why Jeffress is blaming him for anything.

So who knows  Jeffress has a history of being kind of a piece of poo poo off the field, and his former agent is also a complete nutter, so either one could be at fault.

For the second year in a row, the Dodgers have re-upped Toles on a minor league deal even though he's no longer with the organization and won't actually get paid since he's on the restricted list, because it allows him continued access to MLB health insurance and he's been going through some serious mental health problems for a couple years now.

A friend of mine had a psychotic break last year and I got to experience first hand all of the same agonizing issues that were mentioned by his family when Toles' health issues first came to light - namely that if they're a legal adult with money and no history of actually hurting or threating anybody there's almost nothing you can do to force somebody undergoing paranoid schizophrenia to get much needed treatment - so I very much appreciate this gesture in case it somehow manages to get Toles the help and medication he needs. :smith:

Yeah the Rockies are the laughingstock of the league right now, particularly internally where their GM and way-too-involved owner seem to be viewed by rival execs as complete dullards. Foolish Baseball did a pretty good video on it recently that's more focused on how dogshit their free agent signings have been, and how Arenado's contract appeared to be structured on the hope he would leave and ownership could go "well hey we tried" to the fans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRQLsqlQgb0

Yeah, the loophole definitely seems to be that MLB is claiming they'll only look at aberrations in spin rate which means if you use it every start and every pitch then they won't do anything. Also a whole thing with Bauer is that he wasn't just using pine tar, but some kind of new substance he hired chemists to cook up for him that is stickier and less visible than pine tar, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say the "compliance officers" MLB hires won't have the savvy to look for stuff like that.

Honestly a way better solution is for MLB to just acknowledge that pitchers need some grip substance and just say "okay you can use pine tar, but only pine tar and only a certain amount", and then start enforcing that strongly. IIRC there have been plenty of hitters in the past who've said they're fine with pitchers using some a little something to improve their grip because it means they're less likely to get plunked, particularly when the weather is otherwise poor.

Not just Bryant, if the Cubs are well out of it at the deadline I could see a firesale. Half the rotation is guys on one year deals looking to rebuild their value, plus you've got Javy, Contreras, etc.

Of course knowing the Cubs what will probably happen is that at like 3-4 games out of the WC at the deadline they'll add around the margins, collapse in September, and watch half the roster walk for nothing.

The devs philosophy wrt RTTS has been weird for a while now. Starting with 18 you're basically forced to be a middle round pick at best, and the cap/archetype system makes it really tedious to make a player that doesn't conform to a traditional mold. Now 21 makes it seem like it's even more restrictive, with hard limits on how much you can load your player up. It also kinda sounds like you can only have one RTTS character now instead of a bunch because they want them to be usable in DD, which loving sucks because I loved making a random assortment of weidos.

Like nobody is playing RTTS to be a scrappy middle round .250/.320/.430 utility IF, they're playing it to either gently caress around with unothodox characters or to enjoy a power fantasy of hitting .400 with 70 HR's while playing GG SS.

Also Olt broke his wrist before Bryant could be called up with an extra year, and coincidentally the team docter who looked at him thought he was fine so he played another week of games where he clearly should have been on the DL, and was then "re-evaluated" and determined to need to hit the DL just right when the Cubs wanted to call KB up.

Kelenic apparently started spring with a knee injury and got into the action late, which is why he only has 18 AB's and my guess is the Mariners will try to spin it as "we're not manipulating his service time, he's just not had enough time to ramp up because of the injury to start opening day." And of course with the MiLB season not starting for an extra month the only AB's he'll get will be behind closed doors at the team alternate site, where they can make up any bullshit they want about him until he qualifies for super-two.

That said Kelenic definitely has a better case than Bryant does - apparently Bryant's loss hinged on the Cubs never publicly saying they kept him down for service time reasons, and they didn't find anything in discovery to prove it. With Kelenic though the team CEO outright stated an intent to manipulate service time, and if the MLBPA is even halfway competent (I know, lol) they should have immediately filed to get all of Mather's internal communications to get placed on a legal hold.

The talk that the Cubs were going to try and extend Javy/Rizzo/Bryant were always going to just end with "we tried!" because Ricketts was never willing to spend what those guys are actually worth in FA. Rizzo's already taken an extremely team friendly deal, he's under zero obligation to take a second one and good for him for deciding to walk unless the tune changes.

If the Cubs aren't absolutely killing it I expect them to go into full firesale mode come the TDL.
