![]() Hahahahahahahaha last year I was apologising for only getting this up in mid-February.... How times change. At least the first game hasn't kicked off yet (as I nervously eye the clock next to me). Anyhoo, this is the NRL (and international rugby league, etc) thread. Most of the people here are depressed Australians and New Zealadonians who need someone to lend a shoulder to cry on as loving Braith Anasta gets his heartbreaking field goal replayed for the millionth time and I don't give a gently caress Channel 9 I don't want to see that game in my YouTube feed it's loving depressing as poo poo Um, sorry about that. Not sure what just happened. No repressed rage here at all. Back on track - please post in here for live updates on games, news and views, the latest court reports and sentencing, and whatever heartwarming family adventures the players get up to throughout the year. We don't judge, except if you're a Roosters or Storm fan and in that case feel free to be called every obscenity under the sun (and possibly Manly if they actually become good at some point). For the uninitiated who've wandered in, welcome! First, very curious what about the thread title drew you in? It's not exactly a beacon of an exciting and fun sport... Anyhoo, your terrible life choices aside, let's get down to what we're about and who we support (also known as OUR terrible life choices). Rugby League is a fast-moving, violent and very skillful sport played mostly in England and Australia (in the good states) which only lasts 80-odd minutes so doesn't allow you to get too blind-drunk during play. Unlike American sports there aren't ads in play, although they are plastered over literally every surface possible and also frequently dropped into conversation by the commentators. It's our trade-off. We'll explain more about how it all works in a bit. Also we have a discord thingy now! It's at https://discord.gg/bqxDStt (if the link doesn't work let me know since copying and pasting is difficult to me). ![]() Rugby League. The greatest game of all OK, since the kickoff for the first game of the year is literally 3 hours away at this point I can't be hosed writing a coherent introductory paragraph here, while trying to fit in as many jokes about players being caught loving dogs. I'm not being paid for this, you know. I'm also going to copy/paste the rules section from last year because nobody reads it anyway and anyone who doesn't understand the rules can just ask us and we're very nice and promise not to insult you. Pinky swear. RULES OF THE GAME Like any sport, Rugby League has rules that govern how the game must go. Like all good sportsmen and women our fair-and-fabulous players always follow the rules, which I'll summarise below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvzUSmoY3sE In this video, you'll see a few things being demonstrated. Rugby League works a lot like gridiron, but has 6 tackles rather than 4 downs. You also don't get a new set by advancing down the field, only by the other team touching the ball. Every time you get tackled you must play the ball, like in the video. At each tackle the defense must retreat 10m downfield, and the offence must be behind the spot of the tackle. You can also see in the video that the tacklers must give the tacklee some space to play the ball, and if they don't they'll be appropriately punished, as shown. Finally, you'll see the wonderful level of respect that the players have for the referees, who we value and love whether our team wins or loses. Respect is important! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3dRgjY3DT4 ![]() This is what our field looks like, although normally we'll get the excitement of more sponsors' markings on the field and sometimes the thrill of varying amounts of sand to make it feel like a day at the beach! Grass is just so boring when it's uniform, right? To score points: TRY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_RaDAHACD4 Tries are the main way teams score points. The idea is to touch the ball to the ground on or behind the goalline, for which you're rewarded 4 points. Whilst this sounds simple, it can sometimes be very complex and hard to discern, so we have a brilliant Bunker system that will be called upon in nearly every circumstance to decide whether the player involved has been good or bad, and reward them with a try if they deserve it! The Bunker is a state-of-the-art technology which is always correct and is routinely lauded in the media for its incredible accuracy and consistency. CONVERSION https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jjZuRTaBcI As a bonus for scoring a try you are allowed to kick the ball through the posts, which will get you an additional two points. The kick is taken perpendicular to the point on the field you scored the try (you can take it back as far as you want), which rewards teams who use exciting and skillful play to score under the posts, rather than going for simple and low-effort tries in the corners. PENALTY GOAL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHZ5QD07rus Very similar to conversions, except awarded when a player commits an offence. As Rugby League players are always fair and honest gentlemen this is extremely rare. FIELD GOALS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj5CUhVVgDg The most skillful and exciting form of scoring points, requiring players to dropkick the bapppppll during ongoing play through the posts. As the degree of difficulty is so high, only the most talented proponents of the game dare attempt them, and only in the most extreme circumstances. Fittingly, for such an act of skill, the rewards are massive - one whole point! POSITIONS Each team in Rugby League consists of 13 specialised positions on the field, with 4 substitutes on the bench who, whilst equally talented, must wait to ply their trade. The team is seperated into backs and forwards, who each have general jobs to do on the field. Unlike gridiron, but like soccer, each player has the same ruleset - the positions are more to do with their basic tasks on the field. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTUSJbbzxsA Look I couldn't find any Beau Knows videos about the other positions because I'm doing this on a Tuesday at 9:34pm after putting my kid to sleep so get off my loving back I'm not getting paid for this you loving jackels alexa remind me to take that out tomorrow THE NRL ![]() The premier rugby league competition in the southern hemisphere, consisting of only the most skillful teams from Australia and New Zealand (last year and this year we are counting Tamworth and Terrigal as NZ because gently caress Covid). All of the teams have CLUBS BRISBANE BRONCOS ![]() ![]() Supporters: BlackShadow, BCR, GrunZicle, ili, Dirty Frank, Akileese, Airstream Driver, cpaf New faces Dale Copley (Titans), John Asiata (Cowboys), David Mead (Catalans) 2021 losses Andrew McCullough (Dragons), David Fifita (Titans), Darius Boyd (retired), Matt Gillett (retired), Sean O'Sullivan (Warriors), Jack Bird (Dragons), Joe Ofahengaue (Wests Tigers), Jamil Hopoate, Jordan Kahu, Richie Kennar, Ilikena Vudogo, Issac Luke (released) Has anyone stopped laughing about the greatest club in history (in their minds) totally making GBS threads the bed and coming in last? I certainly haven't, and as someone who lives in Brisbane myself I can't believe nobody has punched me in the face for publicly mocking everyone I see about it. The cherry on top was watching the family club completely descend into acrimonious infighting the second poo poo went sideways. So much fun. Their trial form has been terrible with glimpses of mediocrity so who knows if they'll rebound. The smart money says they've got the pedigree but here's hoping they keep being loving trash. What's the year look like for their fans: They'll start out OK and be impossible to be around as they pretend last year was just a shared delusion, before (hopefully) making GBS threads the bed completely and turning into a remake of Lord of the Flies at Red Hill. Last year: 16th CANBERRA RAIDERS ![]() ![]() Supporters: Burn Down Canberra, aejix, TheHeadSage's soft spot, garycoleisgod, BlindSite New faces Harry Rushton (Wigan), Ryan James (Titans), Caleb Aekins (Panthers), Albert Hopoate (Sea Eagles) 2021 losses John Bateman (Wigan), Nick Cotric (Bulldogs), Michael Oldfield (Eels), Sebastian Kris (released) Look, I'll probably be yelled at for this but I thought last year they missed their opportunity. They've been great for the last few years, but never could quite get the trophy. I'm worried they've peaked and will start sliding back to the form that had them as one of this thread's perennial failure groups. Maybe I'm wrong? They've still got a powerful team, but they're getting older and I don't know how long they can keep the pressure up on the usual success stories. Time will tell. What's the year look like for their fans: They'll still win a tonne of games and probably be near the pointy end of the season, but they've got to have it in the backs of their minds that this could be the last chance in a while. That's got to be painful (but probably a lot less painful than us who support teams we definitely know won't do anything). Last year: 5th CANTERBURY-BANKSTOWN BULLDOGS ![]() ![]() Supporters: Dumpstar, Hyperriker, 50% Of FlickingFire (the indecisive parts), Gobbledock, woofbro New faces Nick Cotric (Raiders), Corey Allan (Rabbitohs), Corey Waddell (Sea Eagles), Jack Hetherington (Panthers), Kyle Flanagan (Roosters), Matt Doorey (promoted from development contract) 2021 losses Kieran Foran (Sea Eagles), Kerrod Holland (retired), Marcelo Montoya (Warriors), Aiden Tolman (Sharks), Sauaso Sue (Knights), Jack Cogger (Huddersfield), Tim Lafai, Isaiah Tass (released) I don't think any of us have ever cheered for the Dogs as much as we did at the end of the year when we realised that they could jump over the lazy brown Broncos and give them the spoon. Yes, they're garbage (I mean, rebuilding), but at least they're not actively annoying. The only way is up for them and I don't have a clue how they did in preseason so I'm just going to assume they'll be down the bottom again, hopefully just above the Queensland teams. What's the year look like for their fans: Do I give them the false hope or the realistic depression? Flip a coin, they're going to lose anyway. Last year: 15th CRONULLA SHARKS ![]() ![]() Supporters: Lacklustre Hero, Big Steveo, elgarbo New faces Aiden Tolman (Bulldogs), Luke Metcalf (Sea Eagles) 2021 losses Cameron King (retired), Jayson Bukuya (retired), Scott Sorensen (Panthers), Bryson Goodwin, Kayleb Milne Now comfortably settled into their position of mid-table wannabes, the Sharks have become mostly annoying by having loving Scott Morrison at their games pretending he knows anything about what's going on and isn't actively disgusted at being near plebs. We get it, he's at the game. We don't need 100 loving shots of him whenever there's a break in play. Anyways, I'm going to play it safe and assume they'll be exactly the same middle-of-the-road losers as always since looking at their transfers doesn't inspire any confidence. What's the year look like for their fans: At least they'll have a small amount to cheer about before being dragged back to the reality that they live in the loving Shire of all places. I guess if you're very white it's ok? Last year: 8th GOLD COAST TITANS ![]() ![]() Supporters: oystertoadfish, Redeye Flight, Sojobo, Byolante New faces Tino Fa'asuamaleaui (Storm), Herman Ese'ese (Knights), David Fifita (Broncos), Patrick Herbert (Warriors), Sam McIntyre (Tigers) 2021 losses Jai Arrow (Rabbitohs), Shannon Boyd (retired), Ryan James (Raiders), Young Tonumaipea (rugby union), Bryce Cartwright (Eels), Keegan Hipgrave (Eels), Dale Copley (Broncos), Nathan Peats, Tyrone Roberts (released) Holy poo poo, I don't know what's going on. Having come last in 2019 nobody was expecting anything from the glitter-strip, yet somehow they won their last 5 games, had a great recruitment drive, cut a heap of dead-weight and are looking very ominous as finals contenders. That, of course, relies on them not completely collapsing like they have done so many times before (and did in their last trial) but all things look rosy here. If I have to hear my wife cheering them as they win a grand final I will be very angry... What's the year look like for their fans: Uncharacterisically optimistic. Let's see how long that lasts. Last year: 9th MANLY SEA-EAGLES ![]() ![]() Supporters: The Deadly Hume, Crawfoot, Fanatic New faces Andrew Davey (Parramatta), Kieran Foran (Bulldogs), Christian Tuipulotu (Roosters), Jason Saab (Dragons), Josh Aloiai (Wests Tigers) 2021 losses Joel Thompson (St Helens), Corey Waddell (Bulldogs), Addin Fonua-Blake (Warriors), Jade Anderson (released), Albert Hopoate (Raiders), Luke Metcalf (Sharks), Brendan Elliot, Danny Levi, Tony Williams (released) The definition of a yo-yo club. The last few years are either rocks or diamonds, and last year they were a complete train wreck (only saved from hitting the bottom by the Broncos, Cowboys and Bulldogs heroically throwing themselves under their falling carcass). Going by their pattern they'll be good theis year, but it's hard to see how buying Kieran "80 minutes a season" Foran fits into that plan. What's the year look like for their fans: They just got flogged in the last trial by the Tigers, so that's not exactly a good omen. Only one way to go, I guess. Last year: 13th MELBOURNE STORM ![]() ![]() Supporters: piss explosion, Franko, I Love Sanchize, TheHeadSage, x1o New faces George Jennings (Eels), Reimis Smith (Bulldogs), Harry Grant (Tigers, loan deal over), Dean Ieremia (promoted from development squad) 2021 losses Suliasi Vunivalu (rugby union), Tino Fa'asuamaleaui (Titans), Paul Momirovski (Tigers, loan deal over), Albert Vete (Hull KR), Ricky Leutele (Huddersfield), Cameron Smith (retired), Sandor Earl (released) Yet another loving premiership. When will they gently caress off and leave us all alone? At least Smith finally (yesterday) retired so another piece of the magic Queensland group is gone. Maybe that'll finally stop them dominating. At least we can all abuse them all year here as catharsis. What's the year look like for their fans: Probably even more success but hopefully they somehow gently caress up and we can all laugh at them. Last year: 2nd (Premiers) NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS ![]() ![]() Supporters: bowmore, Mackay, fuckpot, LuckySevens New faces Bailey Hodgson (Castleford), Dominic Young (Huddersfield), Tyson Frizell (Dragons), Sauaso Sue (Bulldogs), Jack Johns (development deal - Rabbitohs), Brayden Musgrove 2021 losses Aidan Guerra (retired), Tim Glasby (retired), Herman Ese'ese (Titans), Andrew McCullough (Broncos), Sione Mata'utia (St Helens), Mason Lino (Wakefield Trinity), Tautau Moga (Rabbitohs), Tyronne Roberts-Davis (released) THEY MADE THE FINALS!!!! Who could have predicted this a few years ago when they were getting the spoon every year? We all wish them the best (until they start getting consistenly successful and we'll all get jealous and resentful). Big numbers in and out this year make it hard to know what's happening. What's the year look like for their fans: They're probably still in dreamland from last year's successes so hopefully it continues. It's impressive they did as well as they did. They hopefully will get to go home after round 4 this year so hopefully they'll be able to get back to normal (although that's not exactly a cheery thing for their fans, so maybe we should hope they learn what the word "consistent" means). ![]() Just leaving this here for posterity What's the year look like for their fans: I'm sure they're used to watching the games on TV, hopefully they'll get to see one in their country soon. They haven't really been active in the market this year so lol I think it may be a safe bet that they'll end up near there yet again. At least they weren't the worst Queensland team. They're very good across the park, but thankfully don't seem to have the killer instinct to win at the right end of the year. That might change, though - they're buying well and the core group is becoming very established and comfortable together. What's the year look like for their fans: Lots of wins throughout the year but hopefully heartbreak when it matters. They should be - they've got a young and strong team with a fuckton of ex-Tigers which normally guarantees success. They just got unlucky and ran into the Storm in the Grand Final, which historically doesn't end well. If they can just keep themselves healthy and a little more lucky they'll possibly win something big. What's the year look like for their fans: I would be getting a place on the mantle ready. Yay the raiders beat the tigers, not sure that means anything but thats the kind of game the raiders have the habit of loving up, so congrats on meeting the base level of competency expected from professional athletes I guess. Sorry tigers bros. After round 1 being nearly complete it's time for me to make my decision on which highly fancied team will not have a good year and I'm just going to say the eels cause why not? Sorry tigers bros. Manly have zero reasons to think they won't be a bottom team this year - they've thrown huge amounts of their cap at players who are perpetually injured and as they showed in round one and the trials their defence effectively doesn't exist. The only thing that'll keep them off the bottom of the ladder is trans like Brisbane and the cowboys desperately throwing themselves under the bus.

Manly have problems and its mostly down to Des imo. He has responded poorly to the new rules. They will still no doubt beat the Raiders but they look in rough shape as we speak right now. They have been known to turn things around though. trbojevic isnt out for too long right ? The broncos looked way better against the Eels. The cowboys looked legit terrible against the Panthers and I think they put in the worst performance of the round. They didnt even look like scoring.

I personally also blame it on the style of coaching and the way teams play football in recent years/decades. Things like halves being left or right side of the field, rather than roaming where they want. Going through stock plays, like putting up a bomb on the last when attacking inside the 20 and not even looking to see what the defense is doing (so many times you see a massive overlap not used because the half just didn't look) or other inside the 20 plays, where if a team gets tackled near the sideline they will burn a play getting back to the centre of the field, cause they don't attack sideline to sideline anymore and they only know how to go from centrefield. I grew up watching Raiders home games in the 90s and the thought that Stuart or Daley wouldn't change their plans based on how the defense is going, or that they would be confined to only one side of the field, or they couldn't go sideline to sideline makes my head explode, they would never do that poo poo. Why yes, I am a grumpy old man, why do you ask?
