Wouldn't there also be an issue in regards to visas etc.?

Coz do the Tongans, (and non Australian/NZers), playing in the NRL would still need to apply for an exemption to be able to leave Australia? Would they be granted one? Also, would they, or their clubs, pay for the 14 day quarantine upon their return? Would that be reason enough for their club to not grant leave?

Does the tournament require vaccination? Coz a whole bunch of League players are weirdo religious fundies, (hello Mr. Folau et al), who probably have bullshit religious objections to the vaccine. That could be another reason stopping them going.

Technically they can still make their own way over, it's just the ARL and NZRL that won't be sending teams. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of players withdraw because of the added time and money it'll take to travel- it isn't a sure thing that the IRL or national teams will pay for quarantine etc. Right now Tonga's rugby union team is in NZ and they're struggling to field a squad because they expected a lot of the players to pay their own way to NZ. They're scrounging around club teams trying to find eligible players because players are injured or having to go back to day jobs.

I look forward to the poms trying to run a tournament so they can declare themselves world champions only to lose to a random Pacific Island team.

Is the thinking that Tonga and Samoa will send teams?

I haven't heard anything. The rumour mill suggests this has been a play by the NRL clubs to keep their players fresh for next season. They can't directly stop anyone from playing a test match for Tonga/Samoa/Fiji/PNG etc but the clubs will probably pressure players not to go (e.g. if you go look forward to spending half of next year in reserve grade or don't expect a new contract).

Someone from Australia might be better placed to answer this, but if I were to try to leave Australia with my NZ passport then I don't think they can stop me. However, if I'm on a foreign passport it's a lot harder to get into Australia. It could be done (right now) by quarantining in NZ for two weeks then going over. It may not be so easy for someone without an Australian or NZ passport. It should be the national teams paying for quarantine (I see it as being part of the return ticket from the world cup).

I doubt that the tournament will require vaccination. The NRL had enough trouble trying to mandate the flu vaccine last year, all the hardcore anti vaxxers ended up using the religious beliefs loophole.

I know you're not saying that is happening but if it is those teams should be heavily, heavily fined.

Just got another update about the RLWC:

quote:

The Rugby League World Cup 2021 (RLWC2021) Board held their scheduled meeting earlier today. While the Board reiterated the determination to deliver the biggest and best ever Rugby League World Cup in history, they are also realistic about the significant challenges that threaten that ambition.

In light of the decision by the ARLC and NZRL to withdraw from the event this year, the Board have asked that the RLWC2021 team continue to hold further urgent discussions with all stakeholders, particularly the players, aimed at correcting misinformation as well as measuring the sentiment on proceeding with the tournament this year.

The RLWC2021 Board recognise the need to bring clarity and certainty to the situation. They have also underlined the relentless collaborative work that has been ongoing since the beginning of the pandemic to establish the most safe and secure environment for all involved - in line with other world class major events that have taken place successfully in the UK in 2021.

We want to thank you for your continued support and patience and we will communicate any further developments as soon as possible.

Thank you again for your support,

RLWC2021 Team

It sounds as though there's a possibility of cancelling the tournament. That seems more likely than postponing to 2022, since it doesn't have the draw of the Olympics.

Misinformation? Australia and New Zealand aren't competing. There's no way to hold a credible World Cup without them.

I think itís COVID-related misinformation theyíre referring to.

But, yes, itís not really a World Cup if 2 of the top 3 teams arenít there. Clearly.

Oh, if it's COVID misinformation they're worried about, from this part of the world we've watched the poms bungle the pandemic for 18 months or so and want no part of that. Factor in the low vaccination rates around here along with squads which will have a high proportion of vaccine hesitant players and it's an easily justified decision to stay away.

Should be a good GF.

Kinda wanted Storm to win the premiership despite my natural hatred of them just so the Rooters couldn't crow about being the only team in the modern era to win back to back. I guess I'll be barracking for Penrith because it's been longer since they've won anything? But Rabbits look pretty good and they've been playing some quality football. The coach battle is going to be hilarious again no doubt, whiny little bitch Cleary vs grumpy old bastard Bennett. Who gets to complain about things being unfair first?!

I'm doing some data study at the moment, and using NRL 2021 stats to play around with... thought all the tippers out there might be interested to know that the Rabbits, Roosters and Bulldogs were most likely to conform to the pre-game betting odds in ~88% of their games, whereas the Raiders and Warriors were most likely to frustrate tippers, only playing to the odds on ~58% of their games.

The Warriors won 5 out of 16 games where they were underdogs and lost 5 out of 8 where they were favourites.

The Raiders won 3 out of 10 games where they were underdogs and lost 7 out of 14 where they were favourites.

The Bulldogs were the only team not to lose when they were favourites all season. Mostly because they were never favourites in any of their 24 games, but hey... keep your chins up boys!

The Titans had the least ability to cause an upset, winning only 1 out of 11 games they went into as underdogs.

The Rabbitohs were least likely to be caught with their pants down, losing only 1 out of 21 games they went into as favourites.

This is a very silly pointless question/thought.

But you know "the Barassi line"? The fictional geographical divide between AFL country and Rugbly League country? And how it was so named in the 60s because on one side of the line that, even if you didn't follow footy at all, you would know who Ron Barassi was.

Well I was thinking, who would the line be named after if it was named today. Also who would the line be named after if it was named after a Rugby League person instead of AFL Legend Ron Barassi?

I was also thinking that, despite how both competitions are nominally national, how deeply and rigidly the Barassi line still divides the country. Yeah sure, Brisbane won 3 premierships in a row 20 odd years ago, and that participation rates for women are skyrocketing in Qld. (if the AFL statisticians are to be believed). Just as the Storm are a powerhouse team on the park, that sell out their little stadium most times they play there. But in terms of deep social impact, nobody here gives a gently caress, and wouldn't be able to pick Johnathon Thurston out of a line up, just as I assume nobody up there gives a rats arse about Joel Selwood much less that he is a cheating bastard who ducks his head into every contest.

In RTS-watch news, the games he played for the Warriors this year will be the last actual games he's played at all until next year, as all Auckland-based teams have officially been withdrawn from the NPC.

Meanwhile, after being dumped by the Sea Eagles, Tevita Funa's switched codes as well, and has landed at the Waratahs, to play rugby for them after signing a 1-year deal. Considering how he could play just about anywhere in the backline, he'd be a handy guy to have around.

Pretty well much. For all the cash the AFL has sunk into Western Sydney and Gold Coast, they really have got sweet gently caress all to show for it.

As for the line...The (Laurie) Daley Line? he was born in Junee and the AFL and League lines sorta merge in that part of the state.
