Love the little mic drop move. The way she's been added in to the splash screen for the game makes it clear we'll likely see some more character reveals as time goes on - Casey Jones and Splinter seem like no-brainers. Going to be a long wait until whenever this releases in 2022 - I just hope that it's good.

The music sounds pretty great, I wonder who they've got composing the OST?

Yeah I noticed that mic drop during the gamescom trailer, really REALLY good sprite animations.

Having April as a playable character is so great. But now it just makes me greedy for more. Playable splinter when?!

Streets of Fury LOOKS absolutely terrible, but it is literally the first game by the same devs that made Streets of Rage 4, so maybe it's actually good?

90 minutes of pure arcade beat em up footage from MAME, of uneven quality, looks like it cuts off on X-Men so it doesn't include Zero Team, which I didn't even remember the name of until it showed up on the Switch out of the blue. It does have a bunch I've never heard of, including some that I assume never made it outside of China?

Yeah but I'm talking about beat em ups and the vast majority of them are vigilante-focused, due to how much influence Streets of Fire and The Warriors had on the entire genre. Generally cops as a force are either non existent (the post apocalyptic setting), or ineffective, or corrupt and paid off to not intervene, or actively coopted/tricked into doing the bidding of the villains in order to make the whole concept of righting wrongs through punching and kicking hundreds of dudes a viable one.

While many include the one good renegade cop or authority figure among a larger team of selectable characters I'm struggling to think of any other beat em ups where all the characters are just a squad of cops wearing the same blue and gray uniform. Like Captain Commando is some sort of future cop but his crew are a motley group of vigilantes who look nothing alike. And in Battle Circuit it's an extremely eclectic group of bounty hunters hunting down mad scientists and super villains.

So Mayhem Brawler looks kinda weird in that context.

I tried the demo for this a few months back, and it wasn't great for me. Slow movement speed, very few available cancels meaning little combo potential, and due to the theming the demo levels already had quite a few guys with guns as weapons. Felt almost archaic, since beyond the SoR4-like skin, it doesn't really do anything modern.

Glad to have found this thread.

I've always enjoyed the genre, since I'm poo poo at fighting games, and this makes you feel like you're good at them. I was a Turtles in Time kid and played the crap out of that game, so I am incredibly pumped for Shredder's Revenge.

I also got into Streets of Rage over the quarantine and frankly every entry, including 4 naturally, hold a special place in my heart. They're all so freaking good, and the music is astounding.

That Fight'N Rage game looks mechanically interesting and I've been tempted to get Scott Pilgrim on any number of occasions, but I always pull back since I'm pretty sure SoR 4 is the current pinnacle of the genre and I don't know if I could back; plus the sad truth is I have no one to actually play these games with, and online is fine but it's not the same as couch co-op. That's being an adult I guess!

I'm currently trying to unlock all the special move variants in SoR 4's incredible DLC. I've just got the 4's cast and SoR 3 cast to go through, I've done 1 and 2 already. It's great.

The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa is weird in that it's a pretty good existential sandbox life sim with a Kunio/RCR fighting engine grafted on top. Beating people up and getting into fights is something you can absolutely do, but it's not the point of the game, and it will only let you see so much of the game. Meanwhile to actually get your grades up and graduate involves spending a lot of time doing boring things like going to class on time (harder than it sounds) and holding the button down to study and read a lot. So it's pretty frustrating to just play the "good student" as well. Perhaps you will find your own middle path?

I would play a 2.5D space harrier beatemup and so would you. We could play it together with NO widestancing, and we could bond over it. Then we'd give each other a sweet high-five into arm bump and then raise our fists in the air in victory as we pixelate and the whole screen stops and then spins into the background which is now a pixelated image of the milky way galaxy

I had been dragging my heels on Streets of Rage 4 for a while, Double Dragon Neon was not really my jam, and while I did really like River City Girls it certain has some issues that are hard to ignore. SoR4 though has been absolutely amazing. Combat feels fantastic, you have so many options on any given character on how to approach things and the enemies all feel unique to each other and any given grouping needs to be handled depending on what mix is being thrown at you. Co-op is likewise fantastic and I have only just started to dip into Survival mode to unlock alternate moves to play around with.

I honestly love how tactical the gameplay can be. Trading life for specials, but being able to earn it back by hitting your enemies more without being hit yourself is fantastic. I was a little surprised that you don't get stars back when you lose a life, I guess I was expecting at first that they'd work like bombs in shmups, and that there are seemingly so few defensive options compared to the wealth of offensive ones, but after getting used to the game I understand how those decisions shape how the game is played. I've certainly seen what happens when a beat 'em up goes too far with making defense too effective and how that can overwhelm the experience. (Hello Advance Guardian Heroes, I still like you.) I love the training room and character-specific combo tutorials that are right out of fighting games because the characters movesets and combo options are so rich.

If I had to make any criticisms, player palettes could maybe look a bit more distinct from the enemy colors. I have often lost myself or my co-op partner in the crowd, especially with the more yellow-heavy palettes. Some of the retro stages (both bonus and survival) can also make it hard to determine your position and where items are. Vertical range to hit certain things, especially on part of the final boss, seems extremely small compared to the range you can be hit by them. Also not really a criticism and maybe more being spoiled by Streets of Rage Remake, but I was sad that there's no real variance in stage paths. The retro bonus stages are interesting and I like that it's there's really no penalty if you don't complete them, other than not getting the extra star.

All in all, though, just a fantastic experience and it leaves me wanting so much more.

SoR4's super simple additions of wall bounces, health restore and a rolling combo counter really transform the gameplay into almost CAG levels of stylish, expressive combat. I'd like to think I've gotten pretty good over my last 18 months playing the game but then I'll watch somebody's full link Stage 6 Mania+ perfect clear and realize how much better people can be. One thing I've always liked about Streets of Rage over other beatemups is that they have really strong character archetypes, and SoR4 goes even harder into making everyone on the roster look and play uniquely. Not bad for a game with two attack buttons.

It's amazing how much you can get out of two buttons! Another thing I really like is making picking up items it's own button. I'm way less likely to accidentally snatch food my co-op partner should grab, and being able to grab weapons out of the air can lead to some amazing plays. Also the sheer amount of weapons in the game is staggering. Personal favorites I've seen in Survival mode are the fugu and marlin. Absolutely amazing.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on Streets of Rage 4 and how great it is, and I do agree that it's almost mindblowing in how simple the gameplay is, yet how much deep and better it feels than several of its contemporaries. You'd think it would have to have some sort of RPG progression system, daily quests, complex control scheme or whatever to keep player retention, but Streets of Rage 4 is the game I keep coming back to play just for the sheer joy of playing it. The only modern beat-em-up that's able to stand up to it at the moment I'd say is Fight'N Rage (which does have those path changes you want): like you say I've tried River City Girls, The Takeover, and so on and they've just been ok. Always up for other recommendations though.

Japanese trailer here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aee546svWwQ

No details of any sort of English release of localization. I could see it going either way - RCRs had a bit of a resurgence from River City Girls in the west but who knows if the audience for that would carry across to a Three Kingdoms themed game, particularly when it looks significantly uglier than WayForward's releases.

Arc's being localising and/or licensing all the recent Kunio games, including crap nobody was ever going to buy, so I don't think there's any risk of it not coming over.

It's coming to Switch later this month, then PS4 and PC in April, and that's probably when the English versions will show up.

Apparently "available now" but not until December 7th for the PC release.
If nothing else, it looks pretty and you can uppercut Romans straight out of their boots which is always nice.

Reviews on Metacritic seem to be sitting squarely in the 6-7/10 mediocre range - apparently it looks pretty and is a lovely tribute to the comics, but is fairly shallow mechanically.
One review also mentions it has 50 stages which seems utterly insane for a beat 'em up.

Still might be fun to play around a bit in co-op with my wife, though.
