For sure, it's why the Besties needs to end (the other reason being the two Brothers should be using that time to make more video game content on youtube), he just gets to that 59 minute mark and it's a hard out, it's so obvious he doesnt want to be there.
Jeez dude The Besties is fine. I'm not sure what "last legs" means for a now-weekly show that previously had only one episode a year several calendar years.

I think the second half of the show can get kind of weak when they come up with some game-adjacent bit instead of talking more about playing games, but I don't think it's any worse than the show has been throughout its history.

I think all video game podcasts are having a slow time because it's a slow part of the year in what's going to be a slow year overall.

For some in the fandom, the current season of The Adventure Zone is a disaster. Some fans who have spoken to Motherboard have said that things have gotten so bad that they've dropped off the show after listening to it for nearly a decade. Some of these fans feel that the current Dungeon Master, middle brother Travis McElroy, has made the show unlistenable.

Lot of joking-(not-joking?) talk about needing to find something to fill out the runtime of the episode to make a living / keep the advertisers happy

I dunno how much of that anxiety was truth vs joke, but I'd be curious how much revenue comes from MaxFun subscriptions vs ads. I was under the maybe-mistaken impression that most of the hosts' revenue comes from subscribers.

I mostly agree with this.

I think the problem is the hosts don't have a lot of time to actually play games, or try out anything new in the slow season of what's going to be a slow year.

Leading to these low-research episodes that amount to saying one or two facts about 8 games instead of anything of substance. Doubly silly to break them up into two parts.

A weekly show that gets no revenue must be a grind. I've been playing the same game the last three weeks and I probably couldn't get that many podcasts episodes out of it.

Just taking every recent McElroy related drama into account, coupled with the pandemic, has led to Maximum Fun no longer growing in size as much as they want. Having to 'rethink business strategies' or something, even after extending the donation period for a bit. Didn't know they had lost that much of a listener base, I just figured it was mostly Too Online people, but Too Online people are basically their whole demographic.
This is the actual quote she references from Reddit at the end of the video:

So what happens now?

I only started listening to maxfun shows (mainly the McElroys) in 2019, so I've only been a witness to a couple of maxfun drives. The ones I've seen have been successful in meeting their goal up until this year.

Are shows in danger of getting cancelled now?

JesseThorn posted:

We budget backwards a bit. Things like, say, adding the cost of booking studios for JJHo litigants mostly happen as the revenue appears to make it happen. So some things we had hoped to do like that may be forestalled a little, it may take a bit longer than we'd hoped for newer shows to cover their costs. But that's about the worst of it.

Podcast listenership overall has been down somewhat thanks largely to people commuting much less, which for us has mostly meant a bit less growth than we've had in the past more than actual contraction of audiences. We weren't really sure how that would affect membership, especially after the unusual drive last year, and decided to take a shot at a pretty ambitious goal. We actually ended up doing pretty well, relatively, but obviously didn't quite make it to the goal.

Generally, though, MaxFun is in very good health, especially with (hopefully) the economy rebounding this year. Our members largely stuck with us over the past year, which is pretty awesome given the circumstances, and adding over twenty thousand new and upgrading members to that is only to the good.

So I guess long story short: we definitely aren't planning on canceling anything.
I've been a MaxFun subscriber for years and I swear they fool around with the goal and/or get a big spurt of last-minute donations every year. I wouldn't read much into it until shows jump ship or it happens over multiple years.s

I listen to Triple-Click in episode blocks and it's low-energy topical discussions where everybody seems afraid to take opinions on even simple topics, which is very Maxfun.
I've listened to Triple Click weekly since it was Splitscreen and your criticism is valid. Some episodes of Triple Click are neither funny nor especially informative which is a bad place to be if you want to build a listener base. I think they need to bring on more guests or something, but they don't seem willing to put any more effort into the show than the current amount.

"afraid to take opinions" is a little broad though, there was a recent episode where Jason tried to take a hard line against gacha games and Kirk/Maddy took a weird "but all games are addictive" stance. But I get the feeling Jason is an incredibly irritating person to argue with so I'm fine with it not being any more heated than that.

I'm choosing to believe that both Triple Click and The Besties are especially low energy in this moment due to the slump in games releases, but who knows.

weekly podcast episodes mean there's a lot of games to keep up with an Justin and Griffin particularly do not play games as their primary job anymore

The original format when it launched in 2012 was that there would be 4 games featured each week (each host brings a game) and they would vote which was the "best" one, hence the title "besties" and the vestigal "...and I know the best game of the week!" in the intro of the podcast
